Cake Decorating

December 4th, 2006 @ 3:34 pm by Mrs. Plum

I am pretty sure I am going to go with the whole vintage wedgwood/light blue and chocolate theme complete with birds, so I am going to go with a “spring-ier” version of this gorgeous Wendy Kromer (from Martha Stewart Weddings Magazine) cake:

I am going to ask my baker to see how much an exact replica of this cake would cost versus a plain 4 tier fondant covered cake (the base of this whole cake) and then order the sweet songbirds from Wendy Kromer’s online shop and decorate it myself.

At $25 each, they’re not cheap, but to ask my baker to make them from scratch may end up costing me more.

We’ll see. I’ll let you know when I find out.

Miss Plum - I’m no copy cat, but I’m doing a bird motif and I think I’m going to end up doing the exact same color scheme as you! Any tips/ideas would be welcome! And can you tell me the website for Wendy Kromer? Thanks!

Here’s a replica from a wedding featured on theknot.com. They had Wendy make the songbirds.

Sarah - what are you doing for a bird theme? I REALLY want to have some type of bird them but can’t come up with any good decorating ideas.

Are those birds supposed to be edible? And if so, is that really really important to you? Because you could probably pick up little birds just like that at Michael’s or any craft store for MUCH less than $25 per.

theyre made of sugar - i think it just looks better than if they were the craft birds. but that is a great idea!

Looks beautiful. Brings back wedding planning memories. I loved the planning and wedding so much I wish I could do it all again.
