The 3rd Dress

December 4th, 2006 @ 8:30 am by Mrs. Plum

I know I’m an impulsive shopper, but I was at Lulu’s bridal salon (where Miss Apple got her dress as well) looking at their sample sale items and saw this dress - I just had to try it on because they were having a trunk show and had such gorgeous gowns. So I did - and I LOVED it.

Have no fear- I still love my Kenneth Pool gown (it comes in sometime this month!).

But I just wanted another gown to wear to my Asian reception (I am having 2 receptions on 2 different dates) and I don’t want people stepping on my gown.

It’s from Watter’s new 2007 line. I ordered it in the white with the glacier blue sash, just like in the picture. Cool tidbit - I was the first person in the US to try it on (other than those who work for their company)! It’s romantic, it’s gorgeous, it was my wedding color! So sue me, I love wedding dresses. :P

It reminds me of a Carolina Herrera wedding gown and a mix of a Justina McCaffrey gown I was so in love with in the beginning, but without the large price tag. It was only $1250 and I got 10% off at the trunk show and a free pair of pearl earrings, courtesy of the designer.

Watters is a Dallas-based company and their dresses are SO affordable. To add length to the train cost only $80 extra, which other companies would easily charge around $500 to do so (Justina McCaffrey wanted to charge me an extra 500-800 just to add a few inches).

(See the little flower girl dress on the wall? That’s the one I picked out for my little flower girls - it’s a Susanne Lively dress.)

I am going to tie it in the “x” fashion in front and it will fit much better when it comes in in my size. The sample was a 10! The little polka dot says “I was not wearing makeup!” hahaha

This picture is a really bad one of the dress, but it’s beautiful in person. It’s not like the over-exaggerated, perfectly symmetrical pickup styles that I dislike like this.

It’s much softer, more subtle - Justina McCaffrey-esque. The back of the gown was what sold me.

Lulu’s did embarrass me by playing a recording of the wedding march loudly and blowing bubbles at me (their tradition whenever a bride buys a dress), but it was cute.

I’m not sure yet, but I think I will be selling this gown after the wedding. I feel so spoiled and lucky to have 3 wedding gowns, but I think that it may be more appreciated by someone else at an even better price. It is in the exact color as the sample - in the ad campaign and in my picture - white with a glacier blue sash and it is a size 4. It will be available after my wedding on June 30, 2007. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks!

Wow, a third dress. I can’t even imagine! I’m in love with another of the new Watters 2007 dresses, this one:

I hope it will be available for me to try on at the end of the month when I start dress shopping, as I think it’s The Dress. It doesn’t have a sash, but I’ll get my own, I really want a sashed dress. This new collection from Watters is wonderful, they did a great job.

Lhuliier-esque, but with a sash? Hmmm. This one?

I like that one a lot, but I have a rather large bustline, and I don’t think those spaghetti straps will work on me. But I am planning on trying that one on. I love Watters gowns, but most of them have some issue that’s a dealbreaker for me–I don’t want strapless, backless doesn’t work for me, I don’t like pickups or bustles on me… The first one I linked seems very Jenny Packham/Claire Pettibone to me, two designers I adore but are way out of my budget. I love the lace appliques so much.

I tried on this one and loved it - but i’m really partial to strapless dresses :) If it was strapless, then It totally would have gotten it!

Miss Plum–ah, I did notice that one. It’s beautiful, but a little low cut for me. When I see very sexy or low-cut wedding dresses, I keep thinking of the line from Four Weddings where Hugh Grant says, about a sexy wedding dress, something about how there’s nothing worse at a wedding than a priest with an erection. And I don’t think that bustles or pick-ups are right for me. I’m nearly six feet tall and a healthy size 14–I need something a bit more streamlined, not frou frou. I’m afraid I’ll look like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man in some of those bustled skirts.

Lol, the “overly exaggerated” one you posted is just like mine, minus the straps that are on that one…which are kind of bizarre.

Miss Plum, can I ask you something, though? And anyone else buying from smaller salons? I finally found the list prices of the Watters gowns (the one I love is more money than I expected, ouch!) on House of Brides, and they’re selling the dresses for approximately 30% off. Why didn’t you buy from someone like them, or Net Bride, or Pearl’s Place, or RK Bridal? I’m in NYC so I can go to RK Bridal and try on, but–why not find the one you want, try it on, and then order it cheaper on the Internet? I’ve heard good reports about all of those dealers. I’m sure you get nicer service from a salon, but I’m trying to conserve as much money as possible!

I bought it from a smaller salon because I guess I’d like to have a backup plan in case my dress comes in and something is majorly wrong with it - if the salon that someone purchases a dress from is not an “authorized dealer/retailer” of that particular manufacturer, you have nothing solid to fall back on - like contacting the company and demanding that they fix your gown or reimburse you.
I did consider purchasing online, but I suppose to “negative” side of me kicked in and said “what if something happens” :-p

but it is a good idea
