A Cake or a Masterpiece?

December 5th, 2006 @ 4:41 pm by Mrs. Violet

According to the Zagat Survey (2003), former dancer Ben-Israel was named “The Wedding Cake Master.” These original designs are like pieces of art work. Don’t you agree? I’m amazed at what one can do with sugar. It looks incredible.

His shop is located in Soho. I don’t know how much he charges for a cake, but I’m pretty certain it’s not cheap. It makes me wonder, what lengths will brides go to find their perfect cake? Would you pay for a cake that may indeed cost as much as your wedding dress or would you settle for less? Call me cheap, but I think I’ll settle for a cake that tastes good and looks decent enough. I don’t need a masterpiece, but if it were free, that would always be nice too. :)

Thanks Jen for the recommendation!

i am pretty sure that Ron Ben-Israel starts at about $15/slice and only goes up from there. lovely stuff, but definitely pricey!!
i was thrilled with Matt at Tompkins Square Bakery–artistry + taste + reasonable (to me) price = bliss.

very easily worth more than a typical wedding dress, but honestly I would expect to spend more on the cake than my dress. $2k for cake, mayby $1,500 for dress?

Wow, that shoe one is fabulous! I think if Carrie from Sex & the City was to pick a wedding cake, thats what she would choose =)

Beautiful cakes!! I am in love with this butterfly cake created by Cake Couture in Hawaii. It’s really breathtaking.

We’re spending as much on our cake as we are on many dresses only because the pricing for the cake we want is about $10 per slice. Sadly, for some hotels, it is cheaper to pay for their outrageously priced cakes than to go elsewhere (due to requirements on the number of courses you must get from the hotel). Luckily it’s good or else I think I’d be pretty hostile :)

Nibbly thing - I’m pretty sure Ron Ben-Israel is a “she” not a “he” - credit to the women!

I think Rob Ben-Israel is a he — right?

I think it’s a he too. Our wedding package comes with a cake that I think would do just fine. I love those mini cakes though. And the one that looks like shoeboxes. :)

$15/slice is pretty steep for cake, but, then again, it’s like you’re getting a couture cake — it’s freakin’ Ron Ben-Israel! We spent $6/slice for ours, and we loved how it looked and tasted.

The thing I like about these cakes is that everything is 100% edible… that’s the kinda cake I want!~!

Ron Ben-Israel is a “he” - I clearly remember a feature spread @ Martha stewart with a picture of him - here’s his website:

My wife completed an apprenticeship with Ron about a year ago. The man (yes he is a man) is certainly talented and also has an eye for finding talented help. After her apprenticeship my wife went on to open her own wedding cake business. You guys can check out her work at http://www.pinkcakebox.com

Jesse - thank you for clarifying that. Thank you for sharing your wife’s website with us. I will check back later as it is pretty late now, but upon first glance, she has a nice gallery of great cakes and cookies!
