Paper Flowers

December 7th, 2006 @ 5:04 pm by Mrs. Plum

I have to admit, after I saw those really cool paper flower lantern/pomanders by KenzieKate featured on WeddingBee a while back, I went straight to Paper-Source’s website to order a flower-making kit.

(tutorial from KenzieKate)

Because it would have been rather pricey to buy multiple kits, I just ordered one kit of the different flowers to get the pattern they used - 1 classic magnolia (this was the closest to my wedding colors) and 1 orchid kit.

Here’s what I made so far:

Finally, I got tired of making the magnolias (*warning* they’re VERY time consuming… you have to cut out each petal one by one in that wavy shape) and decided to make up some flowers of my own.

I made this one by “quilling” the paper - rolling up each “petal” very tightly then gently pulling them back out. I’ll make a “how-to” later when I have more time.

For future reference, I would definitely buy some of those craft scissors with the special edges instead of manually cutting all of the rounded edges. Let’s just say I had many hand cramps and had to take a lot of breaks. :P

Did anyone else do this?

I bought the wild magnolia kit. I agree that it was too time consuming. I figured that for $14 they could at least cut the petals out for you. I made some tissue paper flowers that were much faster (but look more like peonies than whatever the magnolias look like). There are pictures of my flower trials on my xanga if anyone wants to see.

i just made one for a friend’s wedding, but i used a foam ball and then put fake flowers in them. it looks super nice and it took maybe 10 minutes to do. the total price was about $20

I’m making Martha Stewart ones, but not for a lantern. They’re going on the tables at the reception.

I DID IT!
And let me tell you, we had several nice flowers, but the majority of the “flowers” we ended up glueing onto the lanterns were crumpled tissue paper. The more complicated flowers looked great tucked in with the ghetto paper crumples. We also had a bridal shower dedicated to making paper flowers, plus two really dedicated, crafty ladies who made flowers in their spare time. It’s not a project for the faint of heart, but the effect is unlike anything you’ll get with real flowers. I also suggest taking a long strip of paper or felt, as you did for the centers of the magnolias, and just make it longer. Wrap it around and around, until you have dahlia. That works well with felt, and takes way less time. Try it!

Check out Polka Dot Mittens’ blog. (Great blog in general, btw.) She used the magnolia kits to make all the bouquets for her wedding, and they’re adorable! The bridesmaids can all take their bouqets home as keepsakes, which I think is really sweet.

I just bought one of the more colorful (”butter and beet”) flower-making kits from Paper Source as a Christmas present for my crafts-loving niece. We’ll see how they turn out! Paper Source is a great company, BTW. They shipped me an incorrect item, and they couldn’t have been nicer about it, they’re sending me the right one ASAP and I’m keeping the wrong one! Guess it’s not worth the shipping to send it back. ;)

I feel ya, I made a ton of them as decor for our wedding. But now I have them all over the house, so they didn’t go to waste after the wedding, at least!

Here’s one:

Not yet! That sounds really cool. I love DIY stuff. But I don’t know if it would go with our very traditional theme we seem to have going for everything
