Wedding Band Problems

December 7th, 2006 @ 9:37 am by Mrs. Plum

On Sunday, my FI and I decided to go ice skating at the Galleria mall. On the way home, we saw a big building that said “THE WORLDS BIGGEST ENGAGEMENT RING STORE” aka Robbins Brothers. After weeks of hearing those stupid ads on the radio, we decided to pull in and check it out for fun.

We ended up picking out a wedding band for him and I ended up much poorer (not that it matters when it comes to his wedding band of course). Although they have a price guarantee, I just don’t feel comfortable with it. I feel like I got totally ripped off - I paid $1500 for a solid 4mm platinum men’s wedding band.

Here it is - just a plain old comfort fit platinum 4mm band.

Overall, the service at Robbins Brothers was terrible. We had to wait for about 30 minutes to be helped and their prices aren’t that great. I’m going to take it back and buy the one I had originally picked out for him at Tiffany’s, where both my engagement ring and wedding band are from. They have better service and better pricing.

And just for fun,

I finally got a clear-ish picture of my engagement ring. I forgot to clean it before taking this picture. :) I’ll post more about my proposal/ring story later. This is the band I’m taking back - my wedding band is exactly like my engagement ring without the center stone.

O.O $1500 for a 4mm band?!

That’s ridiculous. I’m glad you’re taking the ring back and going to Tiffany’s–I’ve had nothing but good experiences there. :)

We went to Robbins Bros a few weeks back to look for wedding bands as well. We went on a Monday afternoon, so it was not busy and we were helped very promptly. The problems started when I discovered they had things similar to what I wanted, but not exactly what I wanted. Our salesperson kept disappearing into the back to talk to the “jeweler” to see if the other rings could be modified to add what I wanted. Each trip took at least 10 minutes. In the meantime, we stood around waiting and waiting. When he would come back, he would only have half of the original question answered. After 2 or 3 times of this, he passed us off to a “benefits specialist” who really was just another salesperson. Thinking that maybe there may not be a ring exactly like I wanted anywhere, I told him I wanted to go home and think about the two I had picked out and figure out what I wanted to do. I had to say this 3 times before he stopped trying to talk over the top of me. He said he would see what it would cost to build the ring I wanted from scratch and give us a call, so we left. Guess what? No phone call, and we didn’t go back! We ended up finding exactly what we both wanted at deBoulle - for less than the prices they were quoting at Robbins Bros!

If you’re not set on Tiffany’s, check out http://www.e-weddingbands.com. They have the best prices I’ve seen anywhere (about half the price of Tiffany’s for a 4mm, if I remember correctly), and excellent service.

i think one thing to be careful about re: Tiffany is that, to some degree, you’re paying for the name. if you get platinum at a reputable place it’s the same as platinum from Tiffany.

i tend to shop at the “name” places (Tiffany, Cartier, etc.) when design is a factor, but for a plain platinum band you could certainly do better price-wise.

i bought Mr. Daisy’s wedding band (platinum with a milgrain edge) from a jeweler/family friend for under $800 (admittedly, the family friend aspect lowered the price even more).

Tiffany adds 30% just for the name. not the greatest deal.

Yeah, I definitely think Tiffany is a rip-off, unless you think the little blue box is worth the HUGE markup.

Boo for Robbins Bros. Yours isn’t the first bad story I’ve heard. I can’t believe a band there cost more than a comparable Tiffany’s one.

I second checking online if you don’t *need* the Tiffany’s name. However, I can be a brand snob at times, and I do value the level of customer service, name/reputation, and level of design/attention to detail that comes with that little blue box. If you have the budget for it and dont’ mind paying extra for the name, go for it.

Miss Plum — I have been meaning to blog about my rings, but have been so busy… if you want to return the ring you bought, I ADORE where I got mine (and Mr. Lily’s). It’s Tobie Bloom Fine Jewelry in LA. She doesn’t have a web site up yet, but she’s 617 S Olive St Suite 300A in the LA jewelry district and the # is 213-622-6436. Our rings are all custom made and WAY WAY cheaper than what you paid (platinum too…the cost of platinum metal is high right now which is a bummer though). Her stuff is in Saks and Soho Gems and Joe Brand and was in Jennifer Kaufman so she has a lot of experience and is SUPER nice. She really takes her time with you and doesn’t rip you off at all. Just thought I would share since I haven’t had time to really write about this, but I should!

I bought my ring setting from Robbins Bros. and it was such a RIP OFF. I think it was 1200 for a WG setting with eight diamonds! I found it cheaper with PLATINUM somewhere else, but by then the time to return with full refund was passed. I wisened up for my stone, though. They wouldn’t even SET the stone without charging me a setting fee of a couple hundred dollars. I DON’T THINK SO.

Wow, that’s incredible. Boyfriend and I had such a good experience at Robbins Bros that he is planning on buying my engagement ring there!

that does seem like a steep price for a plain platinum 4mm band…i find it kinda funny that tiffany’s is cheaper than them..
anyway, if tiffany’s is what you like, go for it~ ;)

i think your e-ring is beeyootiful! :) that baby is a sparkler!

Yikes! Yeah, Robbins Brothers is a rip. I took my fiance to RB when we first started looking at rings, and we were there for almost 2 hours! We couldn’t escape.

My favorite part of the trip was when I gave them our budget (not a bad one, mind you) and they brought out a diamond with a HUGE black carbon spot in it. I could see it from a foot away! I know our money could have (and later did!) buy a gorgeous stone, bigger, without spots.

I second http://www.thefacetscollection.com for a platinum band. They have amazing products and from what I’ve heard, great service.

Hello everyone! I have TONS of experience with Robbins Brothers. Some positive and some negative. I’m in Cali and even with some of the negative aspects, I am certain I am going back to my rep (who’s fantastic) for both wedding bands and any future jewelry purchases. Granted, if my rep (who I’ve dealt with on NUMEROUS occasions) were to leave RB, then I probably wouldn’t shop there anymore. I guess that says a lot about him. He’s fantastic. He doesn’t want to convince you buy ANYTHING. Believe it or not, we have had uncompromised service from day 1 to day 100 (which is pretty much how it took for my FI to decide on the ering design). In any case, if anyone is in So. Cal. and wants to try out RB, let me know. My contact is great and although I hate recommending ppl (too much at stake) I would give you his info in a heartbeat. Hey, if you’re expecting the worst service/price imaginable, then it wouldn’t hurt to just check them out, no? I too am on the hunt for a platinum band (6mm) but with 3 princess cuts on it for my FI. I’ve seen prices range from $3000-$5000 and the stones are super tiny. In any case, I feel it’s worth the money. IT’s that peace of mind thing I guess. They’ll inspect it for life and since wearing my ering, we’ve found some “hairline” chips/cracks on 2 of the sidestones.. Dunno who did it, but it didn’t matter.. I can’t even find them with my loupe, but my rep took it upon himself to spot them and he ordered replacements. Free of charge. For life - as long as you go in every 6 months for a cleaning/inspection (which I do whenever I’m in the area anyway). That’s fantastic. If they price match another company though.. and the price gets discounted beyond a certain point, you have to forego the lifetime warranty. Anyway, I’ve had some issues but no questions are ever asked and they fix it for me on the spot. I’m one of those “I have to touch it, squish it, lick it, smell it first before buying it” kinda gal. So online vendors (although cheaper) aren’t options for me - unless it’s a designer piece or something I can try on in person before ordering. In any case, I could go on forever (which I seem to be doing right now, hehe)… so I’ll stop here. =) If anyone would like to try my rep out, let me know.
