About Mrs. Pearl

Ball And Chain = My Desk

December 8th, 2006 @ 12:00 pm by Mrs. Pearl

I am a public school teacher. In fact, more specifically, I teach high school history. My job rarely affords me the luxury of keeping in contact with the parents of my students, much less the chance to get my personal business done. I really envy those who have desk jobs where they can subversively make phone calls or emails (I can’t even do emails!) to vendors, leave to make appointments, etc. My job has definitely made wedding planning more difficult than it has to be.

I love my kids, don’t get me wrong. But it’s hard to get it all done. I know people will laugh at me or say “But you get out of school so early!” Actually, I don’t. I’m usually here from about 7:40AM until about 6PM. Only 6 of those are paid hours, but all of them are hours I need to be able to teach daily.

Not a lot of time in there for vendor appointments.

So I guess I’m just venting my frustrations with my job’s incompatibility with wedding planning. I do have a coordinator, but there are some things she can’t do and that I really need to be responsible for. Damn, I really *am* only getting married once because I couldn’t handle doing this all over again!

And now, back to grading papers…

your post reminds me of this dilbert cartoon:

http://www.weddingbee.com/2005/12/12/dilbert/

this is what happens to us desk bound folk while wedding planning. ;)

it must be a crazy busy time for you, but hopefully you can catch up on wedding planning goodness and take a much needed break over the winter vacation. depriving you of email is just… plain torture i say!

I’m not officially planning my wedding yet, but my job does allow for lots of ogling! :D

Clearly the answer is to assemble your students into a team of phone and email monkeys who will do your bidding! The kids have cell phones, and the school must have some spare computer labs… ^_^

Best of luck in the wedding planning and paper grading, Miss Pearl!

Ms. Pearl! i’m a high school teacher too! i agree, i get really annoyed when people tell me how easy my job must be b/c of the hours. the amount of grading and planning done outside of the classroom can be pretty hellish. my first year of teaching, my workday was pretty much 8:30 am-8:30 pm. since then, i’ve learned to be a lot more efficient…but you’re right, it has made wedding planning rough. fortunately, i got as much as i could get done over thes ummer (when i wasnt teaching summer school).

i really really admire the work that you’re doing, but can understand your frustration. winter break should be coming up — you should have more time then right? and maybe you can take a few days off after that?

Ms Pearl! Mr Orange is a HS history teacher-to-be grad student!! Oh wow. He’s not certified yet and we have student teaching to look forward to (not). That’ll be after the wedding!

a bunch of my friends are teachers so i know exactly what you’re talking about! my best friend teaches high school so she has to cram all her wedding planning in on the weekends since she’s also finishing up her master’s too, so i help by looking for wedding stuff since i have a more forgiving desk job

oh btw i asked my friend for a hair/makepup artist referral, but she couldn’t think of anyone that was good with ethnic makeup. they’re really hard to find actually…. my friend specialized in asian and black makeup but unfortunately she’s moving to atlanta early next year. :(

and some left a comment on an old post about tess and said that she’s worked out payment plans with some brides… maybe it’s time to try to get your money back?

is there wireless in your school? and do you have a laptop? if both answer are yes, that would be awesome! sometimes if you’re asking your students to do some writing or group exercise by themselves (or especially if they’re taking a test), you could have some spare time to plan! :) or a cell phone might do as well, but i heard the connection speed is slow.

Thanks everyone :)

Last year was OK because I could send emails between periods, at homeroom/nutrition/lunch, when kids were taking a test/quiz, etc. Now, I can only read my email (but am unable to send, due to school filter settings).

I purchased a BlackBerry to get around the email stuff, but gosh, it’s a pain to try to write emails on it (especially since I’m so verbose)!! I’ll have to suck it up and deal, I suppose.

Thanks for the support, all :)
