I Forgot About Dress #2!

December 8th, 2006 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Emerald

I was fiddling around with our budget when I realized that I forgot to budget in some $$ for a traditional Chinese outfit aka a Cheong Sam or qipao for the Tea Ceremony. Doh!

I don’t know if a fancy custom-made one is an option, considering that I am limiting it to $100. So I’m browsing on ebay… good idea or bad idea? I’m afraid I will get some hideously tacky, cheap looking outfit in a nasty synthetic fabric. Most of the ones I see are dirt cheap and claim to be “real silk,” although it seems like a lot of these sellers are overseas, so shipping is much heftier. A few that I’ve seen that look ok are below.

Although this may be too “sexy.”

I think I like this one. The seller has a good 98.2% positive feedback.

I don’t like ones with short sleeves cuz they make my arm look bigger. I think I like #2 the best. Please let me know what you think!

I agree that #1 is too sexy- especially for a traditional ceremony shared with family. I like #2, but #3 is my personal favorite because of the collar and the monkey knots down the side. I love tea ceremonies!

I agree with Jenny - Pearl River is the way to go. I like the “Double Closure Sleeveless Mandarin Dress” on this page: http://www.pearlriver.com/v2/FramesCat.asp?iGroup=241

However, if you need something made to your exact measurements, it won’t work.

i like the second one in general but i like the 3rd one’s decorative accents. though i’m always hesitant to buy stuff like that without seeing it first because i don’t want to end up with something that’s way too shiny and fake looking.

2, 1, 3. I chose 3 as the last choice b/c if it doesn’t fit just right, the gaps in between the ‘buttons’ might bulge out.

you can rent one. i’m sure that there are chinese bridal boutiques in chicago. i know there are korean ones there. so you never know. in los angeles, i can rent a GORGEOUS one for under $100.

as for the ones you have here. no on #1. i think keyhole colloar is really trashy and straight out of some bad yellowface movie with dragon lady stereotypes walking all over the set. #2 and 3 are really classy.

Trust me, for this type of dresses, you want one custom made, unless you are a perfect model size.

If you want to buy one off the rack, you should buy it for a little bigger than your body, so the tailor could change it to fit you.

I will also recommend you think about getting a two pieces Chinese dress. It will require less alteration, and will fit better.

Too bad #1 has such a trashy cut, because I really love the fabric. I like the cut of #2, but am indifferent to the fabric. I agree with Tea about gaps between the buttons for #3. I’d keep looking. Renting would be awesome.

I like #1! I don’t think it’s trashy at all b/c the opening in front doesn’t reveal any cleavage.

All beautiful, but I super love the one with the keyhole front, ’cause it’s got that bit of flair from somethig different.
