Shopping Companions

December 8th, 2006 @ 10:32 am by Mrs. Lemon

While I was visiting the Monique Lhuillier sample sale yesterday (and yes I completely ignored all of the wedding dresses!), I encountered quite a few women having some rough times. You see, they had played hooky from work all for the chance to own their dream gown. Yet they didn’t bring the right people along with them. Instead, they took cell phone pictures and pleaded with moms and sisters to understand their plight and give them the “A-OK” on the purchase. One of my dressing room companions couldn’t manage to get her photos through, and was stuck sitting in her dress trying to decide if her $1800 purchase would be alright with everyone else.

I was alone on my dress buying day, but I had brought friends along before to sample the wares. Everyone knew what dress I was looking for, but sadly my mom didn’t get to see me in it until after I had purchased it. It didn’t take away the experience too much though… when I brought her to the salon later for a mock try-on, she cried and awwed and nothing was missed. And I’m sure I saved some money, as she would have approved any of the beautiful dresses I tried on… I know her too well!

So, did you or would you refuse to purchase a dress without the proper company? Even if it was on sale and you knew it was “the one?”

I wouldn’t buy a dress without Andrew being there. He will tell me straight up if it looks good, and why or why not. Other people, not so much. So he WILL be there when I try on dresses. He’ll probably help me pick them out, too!

i had two brutally honest gf’s with me the first time, which was nice. and then once we found “the” dress, we invited fi to come in and take a look too. he loved (he is brutally honest, too!) as well and that was that.

unfortunately, my mother could not make that shopping trip and will not be able to come to any of my fittings. it made me sad, of course :(.

If you know the dress is The One, you shouldn’t need approval from other people. Sure, it’s nice to see their reactions when they see you in it, but you should always go with what you feel, most importantly. When I bought my dress, just my mom was with me and that was okay with me. I called my maid of honor right after I decided it was the one and told her about it, but I didn’t necessarily feel like I needed her approval.

I’d buy it. It’s good to get feedback on what flatters you, but the really important thing is how you feel in the dress. I’m going to bring my mom and a girlfriend with me when I shop for my dress in two weeks, though!

I was with my sister and FI’s sister. I found “the one” but felt uncertain about buying it cuz my mom was out of town. I thought she might be upset if I purchased it w/o her seeing it first… so the store let me put down $200 to hold the dress, and if I ended up not getting it for any reason, the deposit could be applied to another dress, veil, accessories, etc. I felt much better about that!

i had just moved to ny and i went to a trunk show alone as my first dress buying experience. i loved this dress but i couldn’t make the decision. it was my first wedding planning task and i was too overwhelmed by what if there are more dresses out there…. esp since the ones i tried on were all by one designer. so i hit 4 bridal salons that week… and then came back and ordered the one i loved in the first place with no one seeing it but me. :)

I just had my MOH with me. I actually bought 2 dresses because I couldn’t decide between the two, but at my the Watters sample sale the gowns are only $150 each, so I guess I wasn’t as concerned about getting the exact dress. But I did wear one of the two I bought that day.

I had my best friend with me and when I found the dress, I called my mom and said, “What are you doing right now” and of course she was working. I told her that I found the dress and she was there in 45 minutes. It usually takes her 45 minutes to walk one city block, but low and behold she got from Soho to Bergdorf’s in that time. It was great!

I live in GA, my mom lives in WA state. I told her that I would wait until Christmas time to go dress shopping so she could go with me. In early November I went looking to just see what I liked and what style looked best on me. The second salon I went to had styles that I loved and I found “the one” ON SALE. I felt really bad about my mom not getting to see it, so I called. She told me if I loved it I should get it while it was in my budget. To make up for it, though, I took pictures and sent them to a store near her to see. Later that day she got to see it in pictures which made her really happy! (This is how we told my parents we were engaged too! Yeah for 1 hour internet picture developing!)

I did the opposite- I had orginally invited my mom and sister to come with my on the BIG shopping day. I had tried on dresses before that day, but I was coming in town for the engagement party and agreed to let my mom set up bridal salon appointments. Well… I had forgot that my friend Lauren was coming in town for my 21st all the way from Florida- so she had to come. And then my mom invited my sister in law. Never bring more than 2 people until after the dress is bought.

Otherwise, if you are alone and you know that you can only get it for the great price on that day, and NO ONE IN THE WORLD can make it out to help you in your big decision, in the end its what you like. It’s your wedding. Feel free to make decisions without having to go through everyone to make sure its ok.

But do make sure your mom gets to see it before the Wedding. :)

I found my dress when I was out shopping with Mr Mouse, looking at rings. We passed by a shop and Mr Mouse liked one of the dresses so we went in. I got so giddy I was bouncing all over the place. I called my sister and she came by. Then I called my mom, and she said if I liked it that much she didn’t really need to see it. So I bought it the next day. I was happy Mr Mouse was there, but I didn’t need too much ooohing and ahhhing.

I went dress shopping by myself. I narrowed it down to a few in a couple of stores, then dragged my FI with me. We got it down to two, and then I had a female pal look at them with me.
But if I’d found the dress that I liked on sale for one day only? I’d have bought it right then. My mom approved when she saw it during the fitting, and my bridesmaid who has seen it (though not on) thinks it’s lovely.

oh man… i am the worst person when it comes to this - i was probably that girl on the phone asking for validation :-p

i just second guess myself for all my big purchases because 1.it’s way important to me and 2. i’m very indecisive :(

i went to about a half dozen stores by myself. my sister, the only woman in the bridal party, insisted that my mother have final approval. so after i had narrowed my choices down to one store, my mom and dad found time to come out and visit. i knew my mom might dislike the dress (it was not white), so i picked out a few others. she agreed to the dress i wanted, as long as it was ordered in white.

I live in Florida, far away from my family and friends in NY.. so when I found my gorgeous Reem Acra sample at a local salon I was freaking out about making the decision alone!

Luckly I had the world’s best wedding coordinator who went back with me the next day to be my extra set of eyes… what can I say, I’m a libra, can’t make a decision to save my life!
