Beehive

December 11th, 2006 @ 2:29 pm by Beehive

In today’s beehive:

  • glass wants to know how many days you took off before the wedding.
  • DK wants to know what lipstick she should wear so that it doesn’t smear or come off her fiance during the big kiss.
  • d wants to know how much you’re paying your religious officiant. She wants to know if hers is overpriced or not.
  • Di’s SIL is having a wedding this Saturday and doesn’t want to spend money on any table decorations. Do you know of any places to buy cheap vases or even candleholders? She’s thinking about putting ornaments inside them.

Hi Glass! I’m taking the Thursday and Friday before our saturday wedding off. Possibly the Monday after, too, because we’re not honeymooning until later. :)

DK, I don’t wear lipstick, so I can’t help!

We had that monday off of work, it was a holiday, I was supposed to go in Tuesday but I got sick so I stayed home, tuesday night we flew back to the east coast. If we didn’t have to travel so far I think two - three days would be enough. I actually used Monday to do wedding stuff as well.

Dk,

I like the Covergirl Outlast Lipcolor. It lasts forever and they have a moisturizer to put on top when your lips start feeling dry. Also you can find it everywhere, like CVS, Walgreens, grocery stores, etc so its easy to find a color.

i may quit my job 1-2 months before my wedding. i work far from home and want to get another job closer to where we’ll be living anyways. =)

lipstick: MAC has a dual end gloss that’s supposed to last forever. one end has the lip color and the other end a clear coat gloss.

I’m getting married on the 30th. They knew when they hired me that I would need time off for the wedding.

I’m taking off the Friday before Christmas (for the two day road trip to my house), and won’t be back ’til the Friday after my wedding (January 5).

Granted, I’m over 1000 miles away from where the wedding will take place, but my boss was very generous giving me 3 days time off without pay.

how much are people paying to have their religious officiant officiate their wedding?

i’m trying to determine if mine is over priced or not.

I’m a student, so I’ll be headed down to my hometown (where the wedding is) shortly after the semester ends–call it 2 weeks before the wedding :-) But then we have to be back in our college town 8 days after the wedding for our summer semester, so we can’t take a super-long honeymoon.

d–ours has various “packages” costing between $150 and $300.

-According to Emily Post’s Ettiquette, the groom is supposed to handle the ‘religious officiant’.
-I am planning to get married a month and a half after my little brother. So I am taking off the time in between our weddings.
-Lipstick. No advice here.

I’m planning to take Thursday and Friday off before our Saturday wedding.

Not so sure about lipstick, sorry DK…

d, our officiant is in the neighborhood of what Miss Blueberry’s is.

Di, maybe your SIL would consider a table decoration that’s dual purpose, like a dessert or something that can also double as a favor. Candles are always beautiful and not that expensive, some nice sparkly ones (hopefully not hard to find since it’s the holidays) would go a long way, and you wouldn’t need that many to make an impression. I don’t know of anything online, but if you happen to be in/near LA I can recommend a few places that have inexpensive vases and the like!

Di,

If I were you I’d check out thrift stores and dollar stores. You can get votives 4/$1.00 at many dollar stores, and if you can arrange a few of them on a flat plate (even a dinner plate will work!) then you’re set with a lovely centerpiece!

Also, mix’n'match is very popular right now, so she could just gather vases from friends and family, combine them in fun assortments (various shapes, colors, heights) on each table, and put a candle inside. (tealights are dirt cheap–about 20/$1.00, if you know where to look)

I’d suggest going to your nearest dollar store and seeing what you can come up with :-) I just got a beautiful fake “holly” wreath that’s just big enough to hold a 3″ pillar candle.

Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to candles. You can make flowers very cheaply using tissue paper. Martha Stewart Weddings has some great instructions, and there’s also the “zig zag” or “accordion” method that can make some beautiful flowers :-) You can put those in the aforementioned mix and match vases, too :-)

Or, you can make a stunning statement using branches: take several small and interesting-shaped branches (lots of twigs and whatnot), spray paint them in the wedding’s colors (white is always elegant), stick them in cubes or globes of floral foam (available at Wal-Mart), then put each one in a terra cotta pot (go to a garden center; those pots will be dirt cheap this time of year!) and tie a festive ribbon around each one.

Let me know if this isn’t enough to get you started; I’ve got a lot more ideas :-)

Di,
I’m with Miss Blueberry about thrift stores. You never know what you will find there! Also check out Wal-Mart for bigger vases or if you want matching vases/candle holders.

Tip: If you use vases from the thrift store, later they can be used to hold little things all over the house. I currently have (what I think is) an interesting glass candle holder with all my pens, ruler, pencils, tape, etc. on my desk. Another plus: if something falls to the bottom, all you have to do is pick it up and look to see where it is. It adds a touch of class to my dorm. :-)

Check out IKEA if you have one in your area–you can get some very inexpensive, but nicely designed, vases, bowls, and candleholders. They lliterally have thousands of those little glass tealight and votive holders, generally in several colors plus clear, ready for you to pick up and buy, for hardly any money. They also usually have inexpensive ornaments, if there are any left at this point in December. And their big bags of tealights and votives are cheap as can be. Just be careful of their larger candles, they’re not dripless. It might be worth spending a little more money and getting good candles, if you go with tapers or pillars. Good luck, and congrats to your sister-in-law!

Hi Mrs. Bee,

I am on a tight wedding budget by choice. I’d rather spend more towards a condo versus on a wedding. However, no matter how tight i choose to be I refuse to have a typical chinese wedding at a banquet in chinatown. I really want to have a beach wedding on the nj shore. After calling several vendors some offer a basic reception starting at $65 per person not including refreshments. When you start customizing and add the tips and tax it ends up being over $100 per person. I’m getting discouraged that I will not be able to have my dream wedding. What was everyone’s budget and did everyone meet their goals.

Flobster to save money in your situation, I think the best thing would be to cut down your guest list. If you really want to have it on the beach, do so with a handful of close friends, and have a larger reception later in a cheaper place.

Also, maybe you could have a rehearsal dinner picnic on the beach, a ceremony on the beach, and a reception somewhere else (that will be cheaper if it’s not on “prime beachfront property”). Good luck!
