Portraits

December 11th, 2006 @ 3:26 pm by Mrs. Ant

I looove photojournalistic candids that capture human moments and tell a story.

Take this one for example. I call it “Where are the boys? They’re late..”

But as much as I love this candid, I would hesitate to share it with a distant relative I hardly know or with Mr. Ant’s coworkers. So when these acquaintences ask for photos, I’m glad that we have more traditional portraits to share…

Looking back, I actually wish that we had taken more traditional portraits! There are plenty of photos of us lip-locked… but there isn’t a single portrait of us where we’re both looking straight at the camera, you can see my entire wedding dress, and there’s good lighting. It’s a standard, boring pose that we mistakenly dismissed. I wish someone could have told us to stop making out and just smile for the camera instead! And we were both so gung-ho about photojournalism that we didn’t write up a “must-take” list. BIG MISTAKE. :( We completely forgot to take portraits of Mr. Ant with just his parents! Thank goodness our photographer pointed out that we should take a portrait with both sides of the family together… Otherwise, there wouldn’t have been any formal photos of them and we would be kicking ourselves in the ass right now.

I never would have guessed that I would regret not having more traditional portraits. Did you have any unexpected regrets?

I totally agree on all of the above! I was so worried about having ‘canned’ photos that we overlooked many traditional portraits that I sincerely wish we now had taken. We have no full posed bridal photos of my dress and train, no pics of just me and my girls, no real formal full length pics of me and my husband that would be appropriate for parent photo frames, etc. I would not want to scarifice the more artistic shots we did get but I would absolutely be less dismissive of some of the more traditional bridal type shots as we now really wished we had taken them.

Well I’m not married yet but this seems to be a reoccuring theme for brides–do the must-take list. If anyone wants a neat template that’s in power point that has the list and some pictures, wsukarebear@gmail.com. It’s just a little different than a LIST. I still don’t know if I’ll use it yet, but got the template from JonandKatie and modified it for myself.

mrs. ant - not exactly related, but did you post a review on tripadvisor.com??

long story short, i read the post below about weddingbee influences and a reader replied that she wanted to go to the Rockhouse for a vacation. So i started checking it out online, and clicked on the pictures… and im pretty sure i recognized the picture of the pool/sunset from your post…

ok now that i wrote it out, i dont know if that was something cool or something really dorky….

We missed the same picture of ourselves as well. There is no formal posed shot of just the two of us looking right at the camera. But the rest of our pictures more than make up for it for me. The only time I really missed it was when we sent one in for the newspaper announcement. I just really love the emotion in unposed pictures.

obviously i had a ton of regrets which is why i had to write a whole separate post. :P I guess even tho we had beautiful pics, I’m just a greedy bastard hahaha.

that first pic is so funny - the expression on everyone’s faces is priceless! and the vibrant backdrops for your photos makes every picture gorgeous… wow i think tony did an amazing job.

I agree. We took engagement pictures last month and they were gorgeous! I am using them for our Save the Dates. When I was looking for a good picture to enclose onto the STD, I realized they are all too kissy and romantic. It might make ppl uncomfortable seeing them or hanging it on the fridge and frankly I am a little embarassed, especially if I have to send these to fmil’s older friends, etc. There was only 1 or 2 photos we could use. I made 3 different designs to go to “different people”.

My wedding isn’t for six months, but what you’re saying makes a lot of sense. I’ll keep that in mind. Make sure to get a good photo of us smiling, with my entire dress in good light. Several good pictures of everyone together, smiling. You’re quite right, the candids are wonderful, but to share with others, you’re going to want to send the posed pictures. Thanks very much for posting this!

I didn’t get a picture with my grandma which we totally overlooked. Fortunately, like you, I have a large group shot that includes her.
