I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Not So Secret Garden

December 12th, 2006 @ 3:07 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Growing up with a literal greenhouse outside my bedroom window, I became jaded to orchids, roses, and violets. I planted lima beans (why didn’t I plant a GOOD vegetable?) at 5, had my very first tropical plant at 7, and had my very own sweet pea plant growing by 10. I think that is why I find it very hard to have cut flowers at my wedding.

While I do love the random dozen of roses from Mr. Kiwi, I really appreciate a flower in its pot. For instance, our centerpieces will look like this:

(source unknown)

Instead of the short glass jar, I will be using a glass vase with a footed base and tapered sides. We will be using the candy corn (right after Halloween wedding), but instead of flowers, I think we’ll be using pillar candles.

Around the room, by the bar, and at the guest book tables we will be using mini pumpkins with tea lights in them, like this:

(source also unknown- Martha Stewart maybe?)

The only flowers we’ll have will be: two bouquets (mine and MOH), 4 boutonnieres, two mothers of the bride/groom, and two wreaths for the flower girl and MOH’s daughter. I’m actually considering not using petals for the flower girl to toss, perhaps feathers or maybe small leaves, I dunno.

The one place I am stumped for decorating is the altar in the tent for the ceremony. In fact I don’t think we’ll have an altar, just the officiant standing at the front of the room, the two of us before him. In my mind, I’ve been seeing two potted topiaries beside us, to kind of “mark the rows” at the front. I can’t seem to find these trees, since I do believe they exist only in my mind, but I’m still looking! This reminds me that I have to find a way to mark the rows; with folding chairs there isn’t much you can to do, right? You can’t stick a bow on the side of a folding chair, can you? Oh, the frustration. Damn me and my aversion to cut flowers!

Oooh, all your plans sound great! And as pretty as flowers can be, I really think this will make your wedding look much more unique!

And I’ll keep an eye out for topiaries for you. :-)

I’m using rosemary trees for decorations at the altar in the front on my church. They aren’t too expensive and are very pretty. Plus they are hardy to 20 deg F in winter, so if you live somewhere that warm, you can transplant them outside.

idea for row markers: hang something from the chairs (draped diagonally, like a pagent sash) so that it rests on the side of the chair and lines the aisle.

Jennifer, that is a great idea! I will totally do it.

Connie: It depends on your colors! Salt water taffy would be great!!! It comes in tons of colors! You could always do that beach glass, you know- the frosted kind you find along the shore? I think bright blues, aquas and greens (maybe with some yellow?) would be great, like lemond heads, Mr. Kiwi just said any kind of candy you can find at the sea shore! Really, it’s wide open!!! email me at kiwi@weeddingbee.com for more ideas!
