Beehive

December 13th, 2006 @ 3:04 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • CB wants to know if anyone has regretted hiring a wedding planner. She has had to micromanage the one she hired because she’s been missing meetings and doesn’t seem on top of things.
  • BS is taking engagement pictures in New York. Do you have suggestions for bold colors/buildings/walls/door backdrops etc.?
  • mango is getting married in a drab church and is wondering if anyone had pictures of nice church weddings or suggestions on how to decorate the aisles and front.

To add your question to the beehive, leave a comment below and we’ll update this post to include your question. See all past beehives here.

BS: We took our engagement pictures near Washington Square Park and NYU. There are a lot of brownstones there. We got a bunch of pictures in front of red doors and cool backdrops there.

Meatpacking districts cobblestone steets look cool in black and white.

CB: I regretted hiring our planner because she was the same way. We fired her, and have gotten a lot more done on our own.

cb: it doesn’t sound like you are regretting hiring a wedding planner; it sounds like you regret hiring THAT wedding planner. fire her and hire a new one!
i have a planner, and have no regrets. for peace of mind and time savings alone, it is worth it. the planner has done it all, seen it all, knows what works, and knows how to make it work within my budget.

BS: We took our epics in the early Fall at the Farmers Market at Union Square. Beautiful bold and natural organic colors!

Unfortunately she is the only one who does total coordination in the area that we can afford! She has only missed one meeting, but is just generally not on the ball. For example, telling me one hotel only has suites when I found their Web site in two clicks which said otherwise. I am going to check the contract tonight…

That’s horrible - I hope everything works out for you!

You should be upfront with her about your expectations and how you’re feeling/what you want from her - maybe it’s just a misscommunication? It’s worth a try!

CB - Missing a meeting is huge. The coordinator’s whole job depends on her being organized and timely. Do you really need full coordination or could you hire another planner that just does day of? Our DOC met with us 4 times, provided vendor referrels, and helped out the week of, all for the “day of” price.

AC, wow, you had an amazing wedding! Just beautiful: your dress, your flowers, the BM’s dresses… And I think I got an idea from you–I love the way your invite had a ribbon between the cardstock and the textstock. I’ve been trying to think of a way to make mine more interesting, and I’m already going to use ribbon…thanks! Your invites certainly were gorgeous, too bad you had a rough time with the vendor.

Not sure if anyone knows or if this is appropriate for this site, but my dad is about to retire and for some reason his company requires that he show a marriage license. My parents did not marry in the U.S. so their license does not count here. My parents are thinking about having a drive-thru wedding (we live in Vegas) so that they can have a license but the date would not be their original date. Is there a way to tranfer the info. from their license to a U.S. one? I’m not married and I have no clue and not sure where to find out. Thanks.

i have a question for the beehive…… for the rehearsal dinner, who should be invited? the parents of the bride, groom, the wedding party, brothers and sisters? additional close family like aunts + uncles + cousins? i ask b/c my family is rather large even though i’m an only child, i have a big extended family….. my family on my dad and mom’s side alone is at least 40 people, and if i invite everyone in addition to the wedding party for the rehearsal that’s at least 60 people!! are there any rules for rehearsal dinners as to who should or should not be invited? we don’t want any hurt feelings!

Mary - the U.S. gov’t recognizes legal marriages performed abroad, so yes, it does count.

For my table “identifiers”, i want to use words instead of numbers. I need about 18-20 words that i can use (ex. love, affection, hope, trust, etc.). I can only think of 10 so far. Can you help me come up with some more??

I have a question for the beehive: I am going to have round Chinese paper lanterns in various sizes (16″-24″ most likely) over the dance floor. I have NO idea how many lanterns I will need for a 16×16 area! Any suggestions/tips on how many to order??

Michelle- I think the bridal party and parents are the only people who have to be invited to the rehearsal dinner. If your extended family is coming from out of town it is a nice gesture but not necessary. We are having a rehearsal lunch before the rehearsal to keep it small. We are going to spread the word about where we are eating dinner to our out of town guests (all 150 of them) so we are not hosting an event but they have a chance to see us since that’s what they traveled for. The restaurant has a huge outdoor area with picnic tables and you pay when you order (so there’s no confusion about the bill being split between 50 people).

On the RD- primary rule is to be consistant. Don’t invite favorite uncle and leave out 2nd favorite uncle. That said, you do have some flexibility:

Minimum Customary: bridal party, people actually doing something in the wedding (reading, etc.), and immediate family of bride and groom. Probably grandparents of bride and groom also. Note this group can easily get into the 20-30s. You do NOT have to invite aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. This size is more suited to a formal restaurant banquet, etc.

From here though, you are allowed to add on some extra groups but it is optional. First typical add on group is out of town guests that would have nothing else to do, though some forethought is necessary here. If you invite out of town Aunt Milly, and not local Aunt Bea, Bea might not get it. And many wedding are all out of towners, so you don’t have to go this route. And then there is the RD that is more pre-wedding welcome celebration, and then you could invite all the extended family you want. If your budget allows, it could still be formal style banquet but could also be BBQ.
