DIY Deprived

December 13th, 2006 @ 1:08 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Like some brides (or unlike other brides), I have just been *itchin’* to dive into some DIY. Unfortunately, I don’t know what to do!! According to My Wedding Day Weather Watcher on weather.com, I am still 269 days away from the big day. So therefore, I feel it’s too early to really start any of the projects I have floating around in my brain. If I start now… What if I change my mind? What if I have a big ole epiphany with better ideas? Then I would have wasted time and money.

Things I am considering to DIY:

Save the Dates - I’m on the fence about these. To send, or not to send? And to everyone? Or just our friends? (we’re hoping not everyone on our parents’ guest list will show, so we don’t want to give them too much notice, buhaha)

Faux pearl necklaces for my bridesmaids - Why would I bother doing this when I could easily buy them for $10 a strand? I dunno, because it looks fun and I have too much time on my hands?

Menus - We won’t do tastings until next summer.

Programs - We won’t finalize anything until next summer either.

Petal Cones - Uhm… they need to match all my stationery, which I have not chosen yet (graphic designer currently working on our invites).

Calligraphy on envelopes - Obviously I can’t do this yet either. My calligraphy skills are halfway decent, due to learning it in my 7th grade art class. You can retain things you learn in grade school! :D

Favors - We are going to give out chocolate in the shape of Eiffel Towers (that’s where he proposed!). My 15 year old sister is in charge of making these next summer using these nifty molds, minus the lollipop stick. Then we’ll wrap them in cellophane and tie with purty ribbon.

Guestbook - I’m gonna put together a MyPublisher album of our engagement pix, and leave white areas for people to sign. Of course we haven’t taken these said engagement pix yet.

Candle votives wrapped in vellum - Again, another stationery/paper matching thing.

(can’t remember who to credit? Please tell me if you know!)

Table numbers - Tables will be named after monuments/places we visited in Paris. I think this is the only thing I could potentially start now.

Phew! At least I’m glad I listed these out. It gives me a better idea of what I have to look forward to, instead of having them all floating around in my head.

What projects are you planning to DIY for your wedding?

I did very little diy. Let’s see - I made a collage of pictures of our guests, cry packets, bathroom baskets, oot bags, newsletters…. and i think that’s it. if i were to do it again, i’d do much more diy.

i designed the invites & thank yous and had them professionally printed. i designed the menus for the rehearsal dinner, menu item cards for the wedding, bridal shower invite, programs and reserved table cards and printed them on my home printer.

I don’t think it is ever to early to get started on things. For me, it was the budget and the venue that were the hardest to figure out. But once you get that down, you have some idea of what to with decorations and all those fun things.

As for the Save the Dates, I recommend it, even if it is just the postcard. I was against STDs for a long time, thinking I could save money, but I’m getting tired of hearing the question, “So, when are you getting married, again?” My grandfather has asked me four times. I went to staples and bought sticker paper for $9.99 and made my own stickers.

If you think you want to DIY and have a vision of what your wedding is already then start as soon as you can. I waited and waited and the STD’s are taking me longer than expected. I wanted them out the door before xmas but it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

For me, I am doing the STD, invitations, programs, bm newsletter, OOT bags, favors, cocktail centerpieces, veil, flower girl pomander, bathroom baskets, menus, table numbers, placecards, bm gift bags.

i am such a computer bimbo… yet i love DIYs. surprisingly enough, save the dates were not only cheap but easy to make on your computer. i plan on making my own invitations and programs as well. because i live in california and my wedding’s to be held at the beach, i’m making programs on popsicle sticks so that they’re like “program fans.” best wishes…

You can make the pearl necklaces way cheaper than buying them. You can get kits at michael’s for like $5 and buy them at intervals so you can use the %40 off coupon in the paper all the time.

The STDs are useful. You don’t know what kind of snafus you’ll run into closer to the wedding. We’d sent STDs to family friends and anyone who needed to travel. Not to coworkers or anything. Though we planned more than a year in advance, we experienced many problems with our venue (it was a non-profit museum that almost closed down entirely. The city took it over and decided to honor events, but that wasn’t for sure. So mid-june we still didn’t have a time or venue for our September wedding.) Luckily we planned to do our invites ourselves and thank god we did — we were ready to go with invites we wanted when we could finally send them. We had the materials in hand from invite site and could just get to work.

Re STD–we sent one round of STD postcards (free from vistaprint.com) about 11 months out, and used a STD rubber stamp on our Christmas cards. It sounds like overkill, I know, but given the time (June) and place (Cape Cod), we do want to give folks a healthy head start on travel plans.

Re DIY–I have a reasonable amount of desktop publishing experience, but for some reason I felt like everything had to be professionally designed and printed. But last weekend, we were at Kinko’s for something else, and I figured I might as well ask…and now we’re saving $600 by doing the invitations ourselves.

I also made necklaces and earrings for my attendants, since I had the tools and all. It’s startlingly easy, and fairly mindless–something to do while watching TV.
