Mrs. Kiwi's Picture
Mrs. Kiwi, Los Angeles Age and Occupation in 06: 27, Bookkeeper Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, P.E. Teach/Coach @ private schools in LA Engagement Date: March 31, 2006 Wedding Date: November 3, 2007 Venue: Radisson Hotel About Me: I'm a bookkeeper who failed high school algebra. I'm currently living in Los Angeles, literally a street over from where I grew up with Mr. Kiwi, my honey of three years. We have a jumbo mini-dachshund (seriously, he's huuuuge), and we're planning an autumn themed wedding on a shoestring, paid for by ourselves. The wedding date is my late grandma's birthday, I needed her there somehow, and that seemed like the best way for us. I can't believe I'm a Bee! I couldn't be more proud!

Driving Miss Kiwi!

December 13th, 2006 @ 11:58 am by Mrs. Kiwi

I’ve been pondering what to give Mr. Kiwi for a wedding gift, and I think I’ve got it. Now, what special gift could I give my poor husband-to-be that most people can’t give? I can Learn To Drive. Yes, that’s it. Beware City of Angels! Miss Kiwi is learning to drive!

While it may not seem like a big deal to most of you, Mr. Kiwi begs to differ. The poor man drives us everywhere (including taking me to work each morning), and even if we can’t afford two cars right now (can barely afford one! ;-)), I think that with a license I can take some of the stress of driving off his hands.

Mr. Kiwi just about drives for a living, working one job in Venice, CA, and then driving to another job in North Hollywood after that. Let’s not even go into how many weekend games he has to coach - I’m often a “sports widow” throughout the school year. So if I can help drive us places instead of always relying on him to do it, I think it will really be a great gift for him. And… Mr. Kiwi said “No kids until you can drive,” so really, I’m just moving it up in the schedule!

Being one to never keep surprises and secrets, I told Mr. Kiwi what I want to give him, and the disbelief and excitement in his voice was enough to let me know this was a smart idea. I’m actually very excited and a little scared, but I figure I have a little less than a year to do it, so wish me luck!

Seriously guys, I am such a non-driving loser. And if my afternoon of watching the Dawon’s Creek finale (again) and crying yesterday is any sign: I am a mental child. :D

Yay! Good Luck!! I’m sure you’ll do great. I remember when I first learned to drive I was sooo scared of going on the freeway (Ahhh…the horror of LA freeway), but once I was on it it was smooth sailing. I’m sort of in a similar situation. I need to learn to drive manual (hubby’s car) and I’ve been putting it off for 3 years now. :0

I’m a non-driver, too. I couldn’t afford the class in high school, didn’t need a car in college (lived in the DC area), and can’t afford a car now. It’s been way too long though. My fiance is after me every week to learn to drive. I should probably do it before we move in April.

It’s also created a lot of stress at work, where they don’t know I don’t drive. I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, but I don’t drive and my family thinks that’s just as bad.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m 23 and cannot drive either. I was planning to learn soon too… I’m kind of scared to learn, but it’s almost a necessity these days. I wish you lots of luck…

Remember, you’re in LA. The answer to any question on the test is “Go with the flow of traffic” regardless of posted regulations. This is not the same attitude you’ll fnd in the rest of the country.

Thanks guys! :) D, I don’t drink or do drugs, but sometimes I think they’d rather I be a 6 pack a day smoker and DRIVE.

Thanks for the tips, Nony and Fizzy! I keep telling myself, if I can pass AP classes and baby-sit preemies, I can do this. :)

Good luck! Just keep in mind that this is one of those things most people (at least in more rural areas) learn to do when they’re 15 or so, so it’s not that difficult. Your big issue will probably be just the feel of the traffic around you in such a heavy-traffic area. The basic steps are easy. :D

Miss Kiwi - I’m an LA native who didnt get her license until I was 22. My boyfriend at the time drove me everywhere - work, school, job interviews. I had a huge fear of driving. Recurrent dreams of my car’s break pedal malfunctioning and running into parked cars. I doesn’t help that LA is such a car city. My advice - get an instructor who will stay with you until you pass the exam rather than one that works by the hour. The ones who have a guaranteed to pass program are usually much more expensive (I think I paid $500) but they are use to dealing with problem student drivers. So they are more devoted to actually teaching you to drive. Also, take the exam in Bakersfield. Its a two hour drive from LA - but the streets are hardly congested, the DMV people are nice and I think there was only one traffic light when I took the exam. I’ve been driving for 5 years now and I can’t believe I use to fear it as much as I did. It’s really no biggie.

miss kiwi: i didn’t get my driver’s license until i was 23. the only weird thing was that in order to get a big discount on my insurance (as a new driver), i had to watch this video about teenage driving and prom car accidents. oh, and there were all the times i felt like a weirdo waiting for a ride with all these 14- and 15-year-olds.

you’re not alone! i’m sure there’s tons of girls that don’t know how to drive so they have to have their s.o. drive them around everywhere. actually, my mom doesn’t know how to drive very well even though she has her license and my dad has been driving her around for the past 20 years or so. lol. don’t worry, you’re young and you’ll learn in no time. =)

Miss Kiwi - that’s almost the exact same reason I just learnt to drive! My boyfriend was bugging me for about a year before I finally caved in and went to the DMV. My boyfriend said the day I drove him the the supermarket was one of the happiest of his life, LOL. Well, I can drive fairly well now…just have to learn to park!
