Beehive

December 14th, 2006 @ 2:15 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • michelle wants to know who needs to be invited to the rehearsal dinner because she has a huge family but doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings either.
  • glass wants to use words as table numbers. She needs 20 and has come up with 10 so far - love, affection, hope, trust, etc. Do you have more suggestions?
  • Jen is going to have round Chinese paper lanterns in various sizes (16¢¢â€š¬³-24¢¢â€š¬³ most likely) over the dance floor. Any suggestions/tips on how many to order for a 16×16 area?
  • Emmie is looking for an extra wide (more than 36″ width) aisle runner that’s about 100 feet long and affordable.
  • rain is looking for a day of coordinator in the NYC area, and ideas on how to decorate Chinese Banquets.
  • hf wants to know the appropriate use of “Miss” and “Ms.” on wedding invitations.

Michelle: I have a huge family, too. So we are scratching the fancy rehearsal dinner in favor of a huge barbeque and kickball game in a local park. It’s more our style, and this way we get to invite EVERYONE!

Hey Michelle,
I’ve been to rehearsal dinners where just the immediate family is invited and the wedding party. If you have a flower girl and ring boy obviously you’d have to invite their parents as well. Any wedding coordinators (if they’re friend of the family not hired) are present as well. Pretty much everyone who is taking part in the wedding.

Michelle,
I had to cut the list down too. My list is immediate family (including grandparents), wedding party, and out of town guests.

Glass,
I also like fate, destiny, & wish.

I have a question for the beehive…

Does anyone know where you can find a wide aisle runner (more than 36″ in width, and about 100 ft in length) that is affordable?

Emmie- Aisleswithstyle.com sells runners in 46″ widths. If that’s out of your range, you could try to DIY using fabric from a fabric store.

I’m not sure what my budget is, but i’m really looking for some one to just piece together the reception in queens, my dilema is this, I’m having a banquet in queens for approx 850 people, we cant afford centerpieces (florally) so i’ve come up with a way to make them, however I need someone to do that and make sure the night runs smoothly. I just dont trust chinese restaurants to have anything of quality, such as arrangement, linens and service but if its what the parents what its what they will get

I have a question for the beehive.

Does anyone know the appropriate use of “Miss” vs. “Ms.” when addressing invites?

If it’s a single woman in her 20’s or 30’s, do you use “Miss” still? Or “Ms.”?

Any single female over the age of 12 was “Ms” on my invites.

it sounds like an asian planner specifically one familiar with chinese banquets would be your best bet. i don’t know any chinese planners, but my planners at http://www.inanyevent.biz did a great job.

I also vote for Ms if the person is older than a teenager. Just seems safer and all encompassing to me.

Rain, I think it’d be difficult to advise you on decor ideas without an idea of your venue. But generally, fabric (color & texture), lighting (candles, paper lanterns, string lights), and flowers (color & texture) are the elements used to decorate a room.

Glass, it looks like you got a lot of words already. If you need more, thesaurus.com might help!

hf: Technically, it’s considered “incorrect” according to Miss Manners to use Ms. outside of a business setting–for social settings you should use Miss or Mrs. I think you should think about what your guests would want: would she prefer Miss or Ms.? If you don’t know her well enough to know her preference, she can’t blame you for using the correct etiquette of Miss.

I would strongly prefer Ms. Ms. was invented as a counterpoint to Mr in that like Mr., Ms. does not refer to a woman’s married status. I find Miss to be outdated and was miffed that my friend addressed me as Miss on her wedding invitation even after I told her not to.

You could also use the word “love” in 20 languages if you can’t find enough other words you like.
