Hair and Makeup Trial - Yay or Nay?

December 14th, 2006 @ 8:26 am by Mrs. Peach

I’ll be home in Atlanta for Christmas and it would be a perfect time to do my hair and makeup trial for the wedding. But to be completely honest, until recently when a friend of mine got married, I never knew that people had trials for their wedding hair/makeup! Which brings me to my dilemma… should I even have one?

When my mom talked with a hair salon a few months ago about a hair/makeup trail for the wedding, the woman had no idea what she was talking about! Maybe it’s because she’s a first generation Korean woman since my mom didn’t know either - my mom just asked because I told her to ask about it. So yeah, I’m not sure what to do.

Our family (well the women - me, mom, and two sisters) have been going to this lady for about 10 years now, so it was natural for me to decide to get my hair and done there for my wedding. Do I just explain to her what a trial is, tell her I want one, and offer her a price? Or just go without having one? It’s not like I want anything extravagant done to my hair - I’m opting for a pretty simple bun. If anything, I’m concerned about the makeup. I mean, I don’t mean to offend Asians, because I am one, buuutttt do you sometimes notice how they love to cake on the makeup? ESPECIALLY for special occasions?

So yeah I’m curious… are you having a hair and/or makeup trial(s) for the wedding? Was it included in your original package or did you have to pay extra for it? Do you think it was worth it? Any other insightful/interesting comments/thoughts?

The last thing you want on your wedding day is to NOT feel pretty. If you feel self conscious about your hair/makeup, it could ruin the day. Get a trial. Really.

I would probably forgo the trial if it were someone I trusted and had been doing my hair for a long time.

but as JP said, if they haven’t done your hair and makeup before for special occasions, it might be worth it nonetheless, at least it gives you an idea (beforehand) of what you like and dislike!

that being said, I’m doing the trial and it’s something like $30/hour for the trial, which is likely to take anywhere from 1.5 - 3 hours.

yes i would most definitely get a trial - esp for the makeup. i did pay for trials but my hair/makeup was different on my wedding day - it was hideous and my moh had to redo it.

if you don’t feel beautiful, it will show.. and you want to be happy, smiling, and feeling like a million bucks on your wedding day. :)

My mom will be doing my hair. She’s been a stylist for 30+ years and she’s been doing my hair for almost 25 years…but I will definately be doing a trial. Sometimes our opinions differ and I want to make sure that we have a clear understanding way before the day of. I want there to be happy tears, not freaking out tears.

get a trial. and get a different makeup person….seriously. bring in pictures of the hair styles you like. bring in as many as you can so that the lady knows what she’s supposed to be doing. the only thing i can tell you about makeup is do NOT get it done by a first generation korean lady. one of my old blogs shows what happened when i went to one for my engagement party (look back to april’s blogs). hire someone even if you have to pay a couple hundred bucks. its TOTALLY worth it.

yeah, i totally understand your dilemma about the getting a trial done. not to mention having to shell out the extra costs of doing a trial. but, i agree, you should get one done. especially with the makeup. ajuma make-up stylists all think that you need to look like a 1980’s miss korea contestant…which translates into super cakey makeup.

i’m not a big makeup person in general, but i am getting a trial. actually, fi and i have a few weddings coming up, and i am having my makeup professionally done for one of them (it’s a black tie wedding and will be kind of a big deal), my makeup artist will be at another wedding and she will do my makeup for that wedding as a mini-trial.

as for hair, i hardly ever do anything with my hair or even use fancy shampoo, but i will also get a hair trial. i want to wear it down, like i do everyday, but i also want something a little more special than everyday!
i’m korean, so no curling iron curls — i want something natural and soft.

I didn’t do a hair trial because my hairstylist cancelled. I’d never worked with her before, and it would have cost me $40. In the end, it didn’t matter because she did an amazing job the day of the wedding and I saved $40. I made sure to take lots of photos of celebrity hair styles and she followed that lead.

My makeup artist gave me a free trial but ended up going to the ER the day of the wedding, so we went to the MAC store and they did an absolutely beyond amazing job on ALL of my girls. For free!

So it ended up working out without any trials. Just be clear with your stylists about what you want (easy on the powder!) and if you feel like a trial is needed for makeup, then do it!

Hey M, if you’re just getting a simple bun and your stylist is someone you’ve trusted for years, then I would forgo the hair trial.

As for makeup, you should definitely get a trial beforehand! I noticed from college that you don’t usually wear any makeup. I never wore foundation or powder either… and when I got some makeovers at different counters, I learned that I’m allergic to a lot of products! It’s important to test out any new products beforehand, not just for the look but also to see if your skin reacts to them.

You absolutely want to have a trial done. You don’t want to try to figure out that day what you want and try over and over again to get it right. You should know ahead of time that way there is nothing to worry about on your big day.
I am actually leaving for a makeup trial in a half hour. The cost of the trial is additional but some stylists include it. It all depends.
But anyway. Do the trials. You won’t be sorry.

Have a trial. I hated my first trial and would have cried if I looked like that on my wedding day. Better safe than sorry.

I had one done. It was not part of the package I ended up booking, but I’m glad I spent the extra $$. The first time she did my hair, it was not exactly what I wanted, so she tweaked it until it was. I wouldn’t have wanted to deal with the extra time/stress on the wedding day. Also, she didn’t have a lip gloss in her kit that I was really happy with, so I had the chance to go out and get something I like.

I’m paying extra to have one done. I’ve had “makeovers” done at the makeup counters and I’ve hated 99% of them! Granted, having an Asian face can be difficult for some make-up artists so let’s make sure you can do it before my wedding!

A trial is key. A good artist will take photos of what he/she has done for you. Then there will be no surprises on your wedding day. The day of your wedding is no time to be trying something new.

The trial was a good decision for me. My trial hair looked great, but my wedding hair looked even better because my stylist was able to incorporate all the feedback from that first session. She even picked up on some stuff I didn’t even know to ask for, like when she said, “I’m making your bun larger because I could tell by your voice that was what you wanted.” And she was right. It was amazing.

Hi there - Did you find a good hair salon and makeup artist? I’m also getting married in Atlanta in three months and am hoping to find someone who is really good at Asian hair and makeup. If you find someone good, please pass on their name!

You will have so much to worry about on your big day, your make-up and hair should not add to the drama.

Look at it like a dress: you don’t just pick out your dress and not try it on until your wedding day.

I am a make-up artist and when I work with brides I require a trial. Not only to nail down the look that is desired, not only that it will give both you and your make-up artist a chance to see how you work together.

It is normal for artists to charge a fee for a trial, but most will not reserve your wedding date until they have received a deposit.

Even if it is a person you go to al the time, a trial is still a good idea. Also, wear a top that has a similar cut to the top of your wedding dress so you can get a better picture.
