Open Question: Undergarments

December 14th, 2006 @ 11:52 am by Open Question

Dear Weddingbee,

When I went to try on dresses, I didn’t bother trying on a longline. So when the bridal dress shop recommended I get one prior to my first fitting, I wondered if I needed it.

Will there be a significant difference between 1) cups sewn in; 2) a corset; or 3) a regular strapless bra?

Does the longline/corset get in the way of the boning of a very structured bodice? And is there a difference between a corset and a longline?

Nhi

Hi Nhi,

It really depends on the style of your dress and how much support you need. If you’re smaller, I think you’re fine with just cups sewn in. Of course they can give you a little boost as well if they’re padded.

I chose to wear a bustier under my strapless gown (the one from le mystere that everyone wears) so I could keep everything steamlined and I wanted a little more support. This is the most popular option for strapless gowns.

I think most of the time brides wear strapless bras with halter, backless dresses, body hugging dresses.

I don’t think there is a difference between a corset and a longline - a longline may be a specific type of corset, but I googled it and couldn’t come up with a definitive answer.

Talk to the bridal shop where you purchased your dress as they’d be the most knowledgable about what type of undergarments you need. You could always purchase a couple of different kinds for your first fitting to see which one works best and return the ones you don’t use.

Good luck!

my wedding gown was strapless. since i’m not super endowed in the boobage area, i had my seamstress sew in support for me. i gave her a strapless padded bra AND two nylon covered boob pads (from nordstrom). she sewed the pads into the bra and then the bra into the dress. it’s was so easy and i didn’t have to worry about it slipping down or showing throughout the day.

For wedding dresses I don’t know, but when I am a bridesmaid I wear this bustier from stockingirl.com: http://stockingirl.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=mfc10&Category_Code=LBS&Store_Code=miccina

It keeps my stomach smooth, makes my dresses fall beautifully over my torso, and I don’t have to worry about a strapless bra sliding down.

P.S. The garter straps and bra straps are detachable, so no worries there!

As others said, the difference between the three is really just the amount of support you want. Cups sewn in work well if you’re not well endowed, and if you’re dress has a very structured bodice, then they might be a good option.

I believe a corset technically should have the tie-up back while the longline has the hook and eye closure. Nowadays you see a lot of hook and eye “corsets”, so I think they’ve kind of merged into the same thing. A bustier is the same, but it ends a little higher up on the body (usually the waist instead of the top of the hips).

i thoroughly believe that a long line bra makes a dress sit 100 times better. whether you are well endowed or not. you really can tell the difference and cups make the top of the dress slouch funny by the end of the night.
