Suitcase/Birdcage/Box?

December 14th, 2006 @ 3:36 pm by Mrs. Emerald

::EDIT:: I found a pic of the suitcase I am referring to!! YAY, thanks Mrs. Bee. :)

And here are some other cute things I found on Cost Plus World Market that would make cool card holders…

Vintage Leather Luggage

~~~
Over the weekend I was browsing for gifts at Cost Plus World Market and I saw these adorable vintage-looking round suitcases, maybe about 12-14 inches in diameter. They were made of dark wood, had an antique-y metal latch and were SO cute! At $24, not bad… Sorry, no picture yet.
I was thinking that these would make a great cardbox! But should I be leery about having guests put their cards (some full of cash and checks) in an open box? Is someone gonna close my suitcase and walk off with with it? Should I look for something that just has a slot on top so people can’t pull anything out? Or am I being overly paranoid?
What other ideas do people have about cardboxes? I don’t want anything shaped like a cake. I was considering a vintage looking trunk or a birdcage, but I have not seen a birdcage that I like yet. What are you using for a cardbox?
On a different note, I have been making a lot of online purchases recently, and probably 70% are wedding related. Getting packages at work is so fun! hehehe.
I love the suitcase idea! Very cute and retro.
I used a clear glass cookie jar for my wedding — it had a 10″ mouth and had a cute glass lid that fit on top. I bought mine at Target for $12. I think they still have them.
If you’re worried about someone walking off with your cards, remember that they can pick up and carry a birdcage just as easily as they can a stack of cards (although not as discreetly). If you’re having your wedding in a hotel or other ‘public’ place, definitely have a friend or family member grab all the cards and lock them in a car or hotel room.
I’ve also seen: hatboxes, cigar boxes, woven baskets, silver or glass bowls, silver trays, and photo frames glued together to make a cube.
When it comes to the gifts and the cards I dont think you can be too paranoid. I was a bridesmaid at a wedding where the brides purse was stolen during the ceremony. A friend was also at a wedding where the entire cardbox was stolen. They caught the theif of that one–it was the bride’s cousin!
I know it seems like a place that you shouldnt have to worry about things being stolen, but you never know. My friend when he was the groom had his camera stolen! i think whatever you use… always have someone manning the gift card station and have them collect them and give them to a person you put in charge to keep them safe. that way you dont have to sacrifice style!
My future father-in-law had made a wishing well with a pail and everything for my future sister-in-law’s wedding many years ago. This wishing well has since been passed around and used at other relatives’ weddings. We’re going to use it too but I guess my future f-i-l wants to build a brand new one from scratch!
I also have a money bag that my mom made for my sister’s wedding that I am using. One of my bridesmaids will collect the cards from the wishing well and carry it around with her.
i’ve never known theft to be a problem personally, but i’ve read many stories about outsiders coming into weddings and stealing things. as long as you have a gift attendant who will hold onto the suitcase until a safe place for it can be found, you should be fine.
we just used a photobox from kolo in our color scheme for our cardbox. i didn’t want to buy something specifically for cards, so i actually used something we already had. ;)
i wouldn’t worry about it too much as long as you have someone you trust in charge of the cards.
Why don’t you cut a hole in the top with a jigsaw? You must know someone with a jigsaw, right? And, I think you should be careful. We took a tour of what is now our venue last weekend, and there was a wedding reception just starting. We could have slipped something under our jackets if we had gone off to the rest room or just were unobserved for thirty seconds. A closed container is much the best idea. And it doesn’t even have to be a stranger–if you have hundreds of people at your wedding, what are the odds that someone there might have a little, uh, stealing problem? Closed is better.
