Beehive

December 16th, 2006 @ 4:30 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • my is looking for a good dj/mc in New York. She’s having a hard time finding good references.
  • CBeth’s reception will be in a tent at a municipal garden. She’s having a casual lunch buffet and needs ideas for fun, inexpensive centerpieces. The wedding is going to have a shabby chic/vintage, informal feel with birds as their motif.
  • mimi is looking for bird motif letterpress invites like the ones here because they’re booked til 2008. Has anyone seen anything similar?
  • Glo is looking for an affordable photographer in NYC.
  • Miss Blue Bear wants to know what combination of instruments (cello, flute, violin, harp, classical guitar, vocalist, piano) sounds best for for classical music during the ceremony and Broadway tunes for the cocktail hour.
  • isabella wants to know which bridal expos to attend in the LI/NY area. She’s on a budget but doesn’t want to go to a crappy one.
  • twelvetigers is having a destination wedding in Florida and a local reception. She’s not sure how to word the invitation so they know it’s a reception only. She also wants to encourage people to wear island clothing. Should she put this in the invites or spread it via word of mouth?
  • felicity wants to know about your experience wearing dyeable shoes because the ones she tried on felt flimsy. What were your experiences?
  • Yvette wants to know if there is a way to directly look up a knot bio.
  • glass wants to know where she can find these embellishments, and whether anyone knows what they’re called.

Ooh, goody, hive time! I decided on a local municipal gardens for our ceremony/reception, where we’ll be having a tent with a casual lunch buffet. I’m trying to start thinking about centerpieces: any fun, inexpensive ideas? We’re trying to keep it pretty cheap, and the wedding is going to have a shabby chic/vintage, informal feel with birds as our motif.

We chose DJ Johnny Stuart - he came highly recommended and I called almost all of his bridal references and got only positive feedback. The thing we loved about Johnny is that he’s not one of those cheesy DJ’s who hogs the microphone - he’s more behind the scenes and creates energy by just reading the crowd.

i’ve heard great things about johnny stuart. in fact i tried to book him for my wedding, but he was booked that day. i also considered david chang http://www.dailycandy.com/article.jsp?ArticleId=22063&city=1 but ultimately went with a band. we did have a dj that our band found, but he only played at the end of the night so I can’t really give a comprehensive review.

good luck!

I hope I’m doing this right! I have getting the best ideas from this site! I am having a bird/vintagey wedding in September 2007 at an old estate. I did find the birds NetterB used as her place card holders on ebay (there were only 3 for sale uh not quite enough), they were originally from pottery barn but have since been discontinued.

My question is about letterpresses. I tried to get Lisa Wong Jackson to do my invites, but she is booked till 2008! She did a lovely bird motif for her own 2006 wedding that I have fallen in love with http://www.goodonpaper.com (lisa and nick). Every morning I have been looking for a similar bird/flying bird motif at tons of letterpresses but havent come across anything as cute. I could probably customize at hello lucky but I think that would get too expensive. Any one seen anything like this around?

Thank You so much!

I’m planning on booking a trio of musicians to play at my ceremony and cocktail hour, but it’s costing a bit more than I anticipated. (Not that that’s going to deter me), but wanted to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what combination of instruments would sound best for classical music during the ceremony and Broadway tunes/mix of classical during the cocktail hour. I am musically challenged. The options of instruments are cello, flute, violin, harp, calssical guitar, vocalist, piano in any combination.

Tea, mini-birdcages are a great idea–and that’s so obvious, I can’t believe we didn’t think of it! Now the question is, where to find them? :)

Mimi - we used http://www.cardsdeluxe.com to design and letterpress our custom invitations. Email them and see if they have any bird motif designs. Good luck

Hi, I wanted to know which bridal expos to go to. There are quite a few, I heard some horror stories for some. I am budget conscious but I don’t want to go to a crappy one. I’m a New Yorker and having a Long Island wedding. Any suggestions?

It seems to me that if you want a band that can play Broadway tunes, you’d need a few brass instruments as well for it to sound right. A trumpet, a trombone? A French horn?

I have a question as well. I’m having a destination wedding in the Florida Keys and a local reception to follow. I plan on wearing my dress again at the reception because, well, I paid for it. That’s not weird, right? I’m also not sure how to word the invitations. I want to make sure it’s clear that they’re being invited to the reception only. I’d also like to encourage them to wear “island” clothing, i.e. Hawaiian type shirts or dresses, or just dress nicely if they’d rather do that. Should that stuff even go in the invites, or should it just be spread by word?

Sorry for the length. :(

Miss Blue Bear - For a string quartet, 2 violins a cello and a bass always sound nice.

For broadway tunes, I go for a vocalist, jazz piano, and a drum kit.

Miss Blue Bear -

I used to play at weddings as a high schooler. Two violins, viola and cello are standard. Try to find really good students to play, for they are far cheaper than professionals, but make sure you hear them before you hire them, because, of course, some just aren’t so good. You can do this by contacting local high school conductors or posting a notice in a School of Music nearby if you’re in a university town.
For my wedding, I’m actually thinking of hiring a classical guitarist to do classical pieces but with a different sound.
For Broadway tunes, I’d definitely go for a solo pianist. You could also find a student to do this for cheaper. ;)

Good luck!

Thanks Laura, Lindsay and Twelvetigers…I’m going to look into the students for cheaper rates, but the insurance policy at the venue might be an issue….but definitely worth a shot. I am grateful for the instrument suggestions as well since I am not musically inclined at all! =)

I’d love to hear from ladies who have worn dyeable shoes and had either good or bad experience. The one pair I’ve tried on just felt so flimsy and I wonder if this is true of other dyeables.

Are they shoes you can wear again? They seem like they might be fairly fragile and destroyed if they get wet at all, etc.

Check out this website for a NYC photojournalistic style photographer. She is moving to NYC in January and has a great rate for the first 15 NYC area weddings booked. I just signed a contract with her.
