Dallas Affaires Cake Review

December 18th, 2006 @ 12:21 pm by Mrs. Plum

I went to a wedding appointment/cake tasting at Dallas Affaires Cake Company this past Saturday - I have to say I was rather impressed (with the cake anyhow)! Although they do cakes only in buttercream, they can do details in gumpaste/sugar like this:

For this cake with 2 faux layers, they quoted me about $1450 for 112 servings. The cake itself was only $650ish but the chocolate branches and the gumpaste cherry blossoms were $500 on its own, but they are so detailed! (I’d charge that much too for all the labor that goes into it!)

The Tasting
My favorite combination was the white chocolate cake with fresh strawberries and champagne filling! YUM! :D Since my mom couldn’t make it to the tasting, they sent us home with 2 slices of cake and the filling that we liked the best!

Yum yum! I’m getting hungry just thinking about it now!

Overall, we’re going to keep looking - I have 2 more bakeries to go to (and one of them, I am using as the standard - where I ordered my FI’s bday cake because it was so delicious and pretty at the same time! The fondant was even yummy - not too sweet). Although I really liked the taste of the strawberry and champagne taste, I really REALLY like the look of fondant - It’s a personal preference and just a cleaner look in my opinion.

That’s a lot of money for sugar and flour! I would go with the strawberries and champagne! Delish!

Trying to help

Bad experience with this bakery at a tasting back in June:

1. The lady who greeted us was not friendly. The workers looked like hobos.

2. We were shown back to a table and chairs right next to their kitchen. I could not see into the kitchen from where I was sitting, but my fiance said it looked dirty. They were in the middle of gutting out one of the malls and there were tools and buckets everywhere.

3. The lady who met with us was really rude. We had found a design that we liked in one of their books, and she said that the design alone would be $500 - that’s before the cake!!! While explaining this to me, she kept on looking me up and down as if she didn’t think I could afford that (which I can’t, but still). I then pulled a picture of a cake I’d liked in a magazine to show her, and she said that it was poorly made and they could make it better - and I liked that design!! She then told us that the basic cake would be $4/slice, making our cake over $900 before a $75 delivery charge to our venue which was only 6 miles away!

So we were not impressed as she brought the cake slices to taste. They were okay - the previous baker was just as good. We’d ask her a question and she would just sneer as she answered and look uninterested while we were tasting all the different options.

So when it came time to leave, she asked haughtily if we wanted to take a slice with us for someone else to try. I looked right at her and said, “My Mom would like to try some.”

The deal is that my Mom lives 75 miles away. We left the bakery and I ate the cake myself. We ended up going with Fancy Cakes By Lauren in Dallas ¢¢â€š¬” she’s awesome!

Sorry, failed to mention that the design you showed is the one we loved also.

You’re totally right - I didn’t want to be too harsh on them, but I did get a rude vibe from the lady who helped us - AND i didn’t like the fact that she was talking about money before we even sampled what the cake tasted like. She was really push and like “well if you’re REALLY interested (implying that we werent) then you can put the downpayment down today - I want you to respond within a week.”

what a b - forreal. that’s definitely one of the factors that makes me NOT want to buy a cake from there - you’re so right about the dirty kitchen too - the ppl decorating werent even wearing gloves/sanitary hats or napkins. O.O
