Faux Flowers

December 18th, 2006 @ 2:01 pm by Mrs. Lemon

Have you been envious of beautiful cake flowers but are unable to find a baker who can mimic the designs found in wedding magazines? Sweetfields’ crystallized flowers just might have what you’re looking for to help your baker out!

I saw the pansies on Martha Stewart today, and couldn’t believe how real they looked! And they are completely edible, so you’d be able to use them on buttercream cakes!

I love them, but I’m not sure why I would use crystallized pansies (for example) over fresh ones. :) Maybe this way you can use flowers that are out of season.

I think the crystalized look is popular for winter or for muting colors? Adding a little blingy lustre?

These are gorgeous but spendy…can you imagine the amount of work?! Wayt o be able to eat them, though… :-)

wsukarebear, you are probably right. It’s so funny how “bling” is taking over everything. Now even flowers have to be “blingy”! Hee hee!

I think the crystallized flowers are just real flowers coated in egg white with a brush and dipped in superfine sugar- so they are not faux at all. You can do this with many other edible flowers like marigolds and violets. Make sure the flowers are pesticide free though!
