Hair-raising Changes!

December 18th, 2006 @ 6:04 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair. Luckily (I think), I was blessed with my mother’s Hispanic genes and shiny thick black hair. I love how dark and shiny it is, but I hate how freakin’ heavy it is. Also luckily, I was also given my Dad’s (possibly) Scottish genes, giving me a pale (read: pasty) translucent skin. This made me a shoo-in for my 5th grade role as Snow White, but also makes me look really washed out in pictures, with dark circles showing through.

Lately, through no fault of my own (Damn you, Advair!), I plumped up with a perfectly round face not unlike a full moon. In fact, the medical community refers to the actual look as “Moon faced,” which makes a bride-to-be feel really good about herself. Anyway, here is my dilemma: I want to cut my hair, but the wedding is in a year, and I was hoping for a half-up/half down look. The weight of my hair is unbelievable, and I just can’t take it anymore. With a haircut, I worry that my face will look even fatter and rounder with shorter chin-length hair. My hair also has the oddest wave to it, with one side curling under and the other side curling out. Since I am a lazy bugger, I refuse to blow-dry it ever, so my hair is constantly up. Right now it’s waist-length, and I want it chin length, which is a major change, and who knows if it will come back before the wedding.

Since I need to head in to the stylist to get these few wedding related gray hairs covered up, I may as well see what she can do for me with new hair looks. Maybe I can find some middle ground, right? One thing I know for sure: some of this hair is leaving!

Am I the only one who wants to make a drastic change for the wedding? Am I insane?

My Sister was diagnosed with Breast Cancer 3 weeks ago and in tears she made the comment to me that she’ll be bald for my wedding day pictures. I have hair 1/2 down my back and once she loses her locks I’m going pixe cut. drastic change to say the least…. worth the snip.

KS, I think that’s fantastic of you, and I want to wish your sister the best of luck and good health in the future. I had a bit of a scare with that earlier this year, and I am really wishing the best for you and your family.

Go for it! I spent almost a year growing my hair out for the wedding and I really wish I hadn’t. Yes, my hairstyle was awesome, but for one day it wasn’t worth a year of ugly ponytails and rubberbanded buns. There’s so many cute ‘dos you can create with short hair and best of all…it’ll totally be “you.” Good luck deciding!

Miss Kiwi! I am just like you! My hair does that exact thing with the curling in one direction (towards the right, ha) and I am too lazy to style it. I usually just get up in the morning, brush my hair, and go, so it’ll be a hit or miss with having good hair days haha. Maybe you could cut your hair a little below shoulder length. That’s still a good amount of hair you can style with and probably at least 3-4 inches gone if your hair is waist length now O_O

Two thoughts:

1) I have super thick hair too, and if you have the stylist thin it (like putting layers in the middle of the hair but not the surface part - basically cutting out a lot of the volume) this can help

2) Japanese hair straightening. The anti perm. Haven’t tried this but some love it. You would give up your hairs texture/wave though.

You are far enough out from the wedding that you could mitigate the effects of either of these, but not completely reverse them obviously.

If you do cut hair off, please consider donating it to Locks of Love (http://www.locksoflove.org/).

I’m sure you can find a middle ground - if you have it just past shoulder-length you can easily do half-up half-down.

I agree with Ms. Albatross. I have really thick hair and my stylist thins my hair from the bottom but not the top and I straighten my hair out every year. It decreases my volume a lot but it’s stick straight so not sure how it would affect the way you want to style it for your wedding.

I am envious of that heavy hair. You sound beautiful. How about a pic?

I have heard most brides make the mistake of growing their hair too long for the big day.

I agree with L–shoulder length or shoulder blade length sounds like a great compromise!

I have similar hair (the first time I cut it short, the stylist kept exclaiming, “You have SO MUCH HAIR!”), and asking they stylist to cut in subtle layers and remove a lot of bulk can be really successful.

And yeah, shoulder length sounds like a good call.

Angel, I think I am an extreme case, don’t worry. My dad has been on it as long as I have, and nothing’s happened to him. I think that I’ve been on steroids and cortisone meds for so long, the cortisol has built up in my body. So really, don’t worry!

I think you should cut it in layers shoulder length, just ask for big layers so it wont look like you have split ends like the shorter layers tend to look. I say go for it Im a big girl LOL and I recently cut my hair and it looks great. Although I must say I did cut it twice, the first time it was a bob( ps.I have curly hair) and my face did look even bigger and I didnt like it so a couple weeks later I went back in and had them layer it… its the first time in my life I can actually say I love my new haircut. It got shorter but I think if you cut it lets say shoulder lenght and you dont like you can go back and fix it but if you get it chin level you might only be able to get a pixie cut. If It doesnt grow back in time you can always get extensions ^_^

i would ask your stylist to thin out your hair. i have a LOT of hair, but when they’re done thinning out my hair (with the edge of their scissor or a razor), my ponytail ends up being half the bulk it used to be, without sacrificing length. maybe that’ll work for you?

Not particularly related, but I thought it might make you feel better to know that to be “moon faced” was considered the height of beauty in China for quite a while. Particularly the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907) was well-known for its round-faced women, the most famous of which is the concubine Yang Guifei, who is sometimes considered to be responsible for the fall of the dynasty. That’s not particularly true, but still. Being moon-faced is a good thing! You’re bringing back traditional standards of beauty! Uh-huh uh-huh! *nods enthusiastically*

This may be a bit late, but oh well…

My hair is about mid-back, but I’ve had it as short as shoulder length before. If you’re tired of the weight, I know just a few inches off can help immensely. However, honestly, I would suggest cutting more than that. It’ll take MUCH less time to blow dry and there are many more styles you can do. Plus, with shorter hair, you can put gel/curling mouse on it, scrunch it and wear it wavy/curly. This is a good way to avoid drying and take advantage of your wavy hair.

Getting your hair cut shorter will not necessarily make your face look fuller. It depends on the cut and the layering the stylist does. I would ask your stylist for tips on the right length for your face shape. He/She will know the right sort of style for you.
