Open Question: Seasonal Gowns

December 19th, 2006 @ 3:45 pm by Open Question

Hi Weddingbee!

First off, I love your site. :) I must check it a zillion times everyday. lol.

I’ve just started searching for my wedding gown. Is there a rule of thumb to determine when a gown is considered past season (e.g., how many months past season) and when I should not be paying the full retail price?

I tried on a gown I really liked and it was selling for its full MSRP. But when I went online to search for it, I noticed that it was from Fall 2005. I like the gown and don’t really care what season it’s from but at the same time I don’t want to get ripped off either. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
Jen

I had the same problem in my hunt. I wanted a dress I knew was two years old but the store was selling it at full price. I then attempted to trick them by pretending to continue looking and found a dress in clearance that was from the season and from the same designer but it was reduced to half price. I brought it up saying that I knew the dress I wanted was from 2 years ago and was the wrong season to begin with and I knew that it should be with the other ones in the sale section. They were caught aback and reduced my dress to the half off and I saved 200 bucks.

Now, I am not saying to try it, but if the dress you want is two years old and isnt in high demand, I would make sure that they are not trying to up the price just because you like it. If it has a price tag, look for cut off sale tags or inquire on the age of the dress to see if they will say that it is more recent than it really is.

I’ve shopped around for my dress and I’ve found that the more “aged” the dress is, the lower the cost should be. The dress that I am looking at was from Spring 2006 collection. At the time, I had no confirmed date so I didn’t order the dress. However, now that I do I went back to the bridal salon and asked them about the same dress and the price dropped by about $50. Granted, my dress isn’t costing me an arm and a leg to begin with…I was told that the more “out of season” a dress is, the less it should cost. So don’t be afraid to ask about sale prices for last season’s merchandise, or in your case, 2 years ago. It never hurts to ask, and ultimately it’s going to be the dress you will remember for the rest of your life, so if you like it that much and can justify the pricetag, I say go for it! Don’t mess with a girl’s wedding gown!

Oh I forgot, if you have the maker, name/style of the dress you can google it and sometimes dresses outside of main cities (like New York) are way cheaper. I have a friend who purchased a 2 Be Bride dress for half the price of what a salon in Manhattan wanted to charge her for by ordering it from out of state. Of course, that also assumes you know what size you will need and can find a tailor to take it in for you. It’s definitely worth a shot! Good luck!
