Peace of Mind

December 19th, 2006 @ 1:45 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Yes, I want peace of mind… but does it have to be so freakin’ expensive?! After over 2 months of being engaged, I finally got my ring insured. A good thing? Yes, of course! But it’s setting me back 380 big ones and this premium goes up slightly every year (for my own protection, says the agent). So if I own and insure this ring for the next 60 years or so, this will run me $23 - $24,000. *ouch*

I thought I would get some sort of discount for going through State Farm, since my family has every type of insurance known to man with them. Unfortunately not. But I am glad to know that this policy pretty much covers everything with the exception of acts of war, nuclear hazard, and uhm, vermin? It’s global, there’s no deductible, and will cover any sort of loss, theft or damage. At least I am confident that State Farm is reputable and God forbid should anything happen, they won’t try to give me less than the value to replace the ring. But regardless, I love my ring insanely much, and wouldn’t downsize to reduce the insurance cost, haha.

Anyways, here’s some morning eye candy… please excuse my wrinkly fingers.

Is that $380 a year?

that is a BEAUTIFUL ring, Miss Emerald.

ciaobella - I already had a renter’s insurance policy with State Farm, but it was very easy. I called them up, said I wanted to create a personal articles insurance policy for my ring, made copies of the certificates and appraisals, met with the agent for about 30 minutes and was done!

My premium was only around $150 - it probably fluctuates based on the replacement/appraisal value of your ring.

This is an issue that is getting a lot of attention in our home too!

I called Geico yesterday thinking that since I have auto ins with them, it would be cheap-ish to add ring insurance with them. Wrong. I have to first get renter’s insurance, and include the jewelry in that, which comes to $500 per year. I suppose it doesn’t sound like a lot, but I could buy a new ring with the money I’ll spend over the next 12-15 years. As my mom pointed out, insurance is mostly for things that you must have replaced right away, that you couldn’t be without for any period of time. Maybe I’m in a different boat because my ring is worth less than $10,000?

I still plan to shop around for insurance, because for $200-$300 per year it would be worth it to me. My friend has state farm and says it’s reasonably priced, however she is thinking of switching because of how shiesty they were with the hurricane katrina stuff (not to open another can of worms, but since we were just talking about conflict diamonds, why now conflict (or shady) insurance companies?)

WOW! Your ring is beautiful. Peace of mind is worth a lot. Your ring has value beyond the $! Insure it. Be careful with it. Wear it all the time and shop around.

Ciaobella, the process was easy! But I dont know which company you (or your family) has insurance through. If its not State Farm, I would try yours first for sake of ease. But if you have a valuable ring, you will want to make sure that you schedule it its own separate policy, otherwise Insurance will not cover the full cost of the ring if anything happens.

Wow your ring is gorgeous!!! I almost chose a similar setting but it was too expensive ;( Fi just slapped my ring along with the car insurance he uses.

LA, that’s really good to know. Mr Mouse has State Farm & I have Allstate so we’re trying to figure out who to go with. This will definately factor in our decision. Thanks for posting!

that’s such a gorgeous ring!
is that an emerald set east/west with the halo? or is it just the view of the photos?

i have a very similar ring… except it’s an oval diamond set east/west with a halo and diamond band. i love it. i’m always getting comments about how beautifully unique it is.

I’m 2 weeks into my engagement. We haven’t gotten insurance yet. My FI likes to research the heck out of everything before making his choice. According to my FI I’m wearing it at my own risk. If I lose it I’ll either have to settle for a much smaller one or wait 10 years. I’m still wearing it though… hopefully I won’t regret it.

He got my ring at Blue Nile and they had a preferred insurance company to work with. I forget their name but I can post it later. They look like they specialize in only insuring jewerly. Has anyone gone through a non-typical insurance company (i.e., AAA, farmers, etc)?

Also knock on wood… has anyone had to use their insurance to replace the ring? How was the process? Difficult?

I have almost the exact same ring but a north-south cushion cut! Also looking for insurance but it’s about $400 a month in NYC… then again, losing it or having it stolen on the subway would devastate me… Who did you have appraise it for insurance purposes?

Miss Emerald says:

sea - yes, it is set east/west! I think it makes it a little different…

lisa - the appraisal was from the jeweler that created the custom setting. That was good enough for State Farm!
