Reader Buzz: Registries

December 20th, 2006 @ 10:45 am by Reader Buzz

Mrs. Bee here.

Some of the most popular places to register include:

Bed Bath & Beyond
Bloomingdales
Crate & Barrel
JC Penney
Macy’s
Pottery Barn
Target
Williams & Sonoma

After a bad experience with Bloomingdales’ registry service, (rude rep and items continually being discontinued) Mr. Bee and I closed out the registry and created a small one at Bed Bath and Beyond. The service at BBB was great (if you go to the one in Chelsea, you have to see the super knowledgable Jon in the cookware department) and they had a very lenient return policy - as long as they sell it, they’ll accept it back.

It was easy to choose a place to register because we needed a lot of household basics, and BBB had the largest selection. The All-Clad cookware and Global knives I wanted also cost less at BBB than at other popular retailers. And since most of our guests were our friends, we didn’t have to worry about registering at a major department store for less internet savvy guests. Overall we had a great experience with BBB and would highly recommend them.

Where are you registered, why did you decide to register there, and what has been your experience with them so far?

hi, i am a new reader of wedding bee and i love your site.. it gives a lot of great ideas and advice, i am getting married in 6/07 in NJ.. i originally was registered at fortunoff, but since it is not a nationwide store, i switched everything over to BBB and i am very pleased.. they do have almost everything we need and the coupons help a lot too (i am concerned that people will be discouraged from buying things if they seem too expensive).. i also registered a few things at amazon.com, but the inventory and prices are always fluctuating.. and its not good for people who do not use the internet..

We registered at C&B and Macy’s and were pretty happy overall. We ran into some problems with Macy’s where the coffeemaker we wanted was available on their website but we couldn’t add it to our registry. I ended up having to go to our local store and do it in person. We do have a few things from C&B that were ordered months ago but they’re backordered so we haven’t gotten them. It just worries me because I don’t want the buyer to think we’re rude for not getting a thank you note out sooner. Macy’s will show you online who bought what but C&B doesn’t have that option.

We registered at BBB, Crate & Barrel, and Amazon. i think they’re a pretty good combination of places. Amazon is good for things like cookbooks, tools, and boardgames. We registered for kitchen appliances and towels and things at BBB, and “pretty things” at C&B. We just registered recently so we haven’t had any bad or good experiences yet.

We are registered at 3 places — Crate & Barrell, Bed Bath and Beyond and Fortunoff.

C&B: Seasonal items tend to be out fast. Not sure how often they update the registry…got a same gift twice?!?!

BBB: Certain items are not available at the store. Great service, easy return.

Fortunoff: Great selections of chinas. I wasn’t into registering there first. I thought it was so $$$ — but then I realized that they do have other not-so-$ stuff too.

i was at C&B and BB&B. i’ve been happy with both choices. C&B packed our china/glassware very very well. one spoon was bent and we were sent a replacement no questions asked. we also registered at honeymoonwishes.com. only one person bought something off of it even though everyone thought it was a great idea. the problem with HW is that they DON’T say who purchased what. So, if the gift giver hadn’t have told us what they bought, we would never have known who to send the thank you to. not good.

BB&B b/c of the selection and ease of use. Helps that you get a completion coupon and there are TONS of 20% off coupons floating around for all your guests.

We also registered at Sears so Fi could get some tools :)

I’m curious about the Amazon registery and am considering using it, but I’d like to hear some feedback on it?? Like a posted mentioned above, the prices keep fluctuating, and there are many sellers that sell the same item, so how do you choose?? Does it matter if items are from their partner vendors? But I like the fact that you can find pretty much everything on Amazon!

We are definitely doing Macy’s & C&B…

We registered at B3, Target, and Sears.

The Sears one we did just for tools for my husband and some weight sets. That registry sold out right away. So if you want a good registry for him to get some Craftsman tools, this was excellent. They weren’t really great in the store (new associates), but it’s so easy to update.

My fiance and I are getting married in October 2007. We weren’t sure when was a good time to start a registry. How early is too early?

I’d like to know more about registry alternatives like honeymoonwishes, thanks Miss Birds of Paradise.

I don’t remember if a post like this, it would be good to hear about the honeymoon registries or green wish type stuff.

D: We registered two months after our engagement because people had asked us. Initially, we placed bigger items, such as crystals, china, kitchen-aid, etc. on it. And then, as we got closer to the shower, we put more stuff like towels, placemats etc. Also, depends on whether you are having an engagement party too…if you are, I suggest that you do start at least 1 registry. I’ve been to an e-party where all that Bride/Groom got were barwares (and they don’t drink! ha!)

I completely agree…BBB was a great choice for my wedding registry. They have beautiful china, stemware and flatware too as well as wonderful everyday dishes.

Like Amanda, we registered at B,B&B for the inside the house stuff and Sears for the tools and outside the house items.

We also registered at BBB, and I’ve been really happy so far. I liked that we could register for more expensive stuff (I WANT THAT VACUUM CLEANER!) and less expensive stuff, so our friends have lots of options. We’ve actually been getting a lot of the stuff for Christmas, and it’s all been great so far.

We’ve registered at W&S for our dinnerware and barware and BBB for everything else. I admit I like to look at it once in a while to daydream about the day I’ll have a stocked kitchen. :)

I’ve had good experiences with both so far, although W&S’s Web site groups the plates and bowls in a weird way on the registry. It makes you think you have to buy 4 at a time and have no choice to buy the place setting if you want to. I’m not sure what do to about that.

We’re getting married in Sept, but we started the registry last month bc our parents said people might want to buy Christmas presents from it. And it makes you feel like you’re making progress in a small way!

Nony Mouse

Dillard’s for stoneware, flatware, barware, & linens. (And they have difficulty with understanding that the event city is not the same city as the shipping address. I’ve had to call them several times to get it fixed.)
Target for everyday and ‘fun’ things. Primarily because there are a few people who would rather go to target, with numbered aisles.
Amazon.com for bakeware, kitchen appliances, serving pieces in my flatware pattern, and all types of misc. things. Amazon does have difficulties because sometimes a supplier is out of stock. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a specific brand, someone has it, and you can cross-reference Consumer Reports and the customer feedback on any given item. Oh, and updating is fairly quick and painless.

We had a great experience at Crate & Barrel, and we’re thinking about adding Macy’s or Amazon to the mix. Since we don’t need china, it’s been a bit harder to decide on the “second” spot.

D I would register as soon as you can - it’s super easy you can do most of it online without even leaving your home! And if you’re like us, you can only do it in small doses, so it will take us a few more weeks to get ours complete. Plus, you may as well - you want to have a response when the first person asks you “where are you registered”.

We registered at Macys and C&B. I found Macys to be sort of pricey and didn’t have the selection I was hoping for, but I heard that their reigstry is the best for “rewards” - like 5% back in cash on all items purchased off your registry, even ones you can buy for yourself after the wedding! Thanks for all the tips, now I am definitely going to look into BBB!

We registered at a number of stores, including many of the above mentioned for similar reasons. We also went through the I DO FOUNDATION. This site donates a portion of the gifts from your registries to charities that you have selected. Additionally, my fiance and I try to live a more green lifestyle and registered at GAIAM.COM and VIVATERRA.COM

I just did research on honeymoon registries last night and decided to take the plunge with http://www.travelersjoy.com. I love it so far. It’s user friendly, looks nice, and their fees seem to be the lowest (7.5%).
