A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

December 21st, 2006 @ 12:57 pm by Mrs. Emerald

Even though Mr. E and I decided not to do Christmas gifts this year in order to save money, I decided to make him a photobook with pictures of our trip to Paris and London. I wanted to do this for multiple reasons…

1. The trip is super meaningful to us cuz that’s where he proposed!
2. I didn’t feel like printing out loose 4 x 6’s and sticking them in a regular album
3. I wanted to test out blurb.com, which I recently read about in someone’s (can’t remember whose?) knot bio, and see if I could eventually use this to design a guestbook for the wedding

Here are a few shots of the finished product:

Sorry for the poor lighting! Here is my review:

The Good:
It was very easy to make! I downloaded their bookmaking software, uploaded my pictures, and then it was basically drag and drop from there! They have a number of layout options, and I chose the photobook one with very little text (I wasn’t very creative with captions either whatevah1.gif). You have to fudge around with it to get the pictures to fit correctly. It was fairly inexpensive, $43 including shipping, and I had close to 80 pages, with over 200+ pictures. And it also arrived in a week and a half. I LOVE the fact that it comes with a glossy dust jacket cover, just like a real coffee table book. That was the main factor that lead me to choose Blurb over MyPublisher.

The Ok:
It took FOREVER to upload, even with my cable connection! 1.5 - 2 hours… I was doing this around midnight, and I passed out on my couch. Honestly, I was slightly disappointed with the quality of the images. I thought the pictures would be crisper, but I think they are slightly blurred. I don’t think this is on account of my camera, which is pretty high quality and we had it on the highest megapixel setting. The images look very clear on my moniter. Also, the Blurb bookmaking software does not have photo editing options (does My Publisher?) so you should definitely correct for color in Photoshop before uploading. I was in a hurry to make this book cuz I wanted to ensure that it arrived before Christmas, so I designed it in one night. Next time I will photoshop my pictures beforehand. Anyways, the colors seemed rather muted in the book. The book also seemed smaller and slimmer than I thought it would be.

I probably will end up using one of these programs to design a Guestbook with our Engagement photos. I’m sure the pictures from my photographer will be very high quality pixel-wise (knock on wood) so I guess that will be the real test to see how well Blurb/MP prints!

All in all, I think Mr. E will love this present, and it will be a great memory of our trip. I do recommend blurb, but I think I’d like to give MP a try as well! Anyone else use one of these (or another) program, and what are your thoughts?

the book looks so great and i am sure mr. e will love it :-) i used photoworks.com to create both our wedding guest book and honeymoon album…i was thrilled with the results of both. it seems a little bit more expensive then your option, but the print quality and clarity is fantastic. i have at least 3 friends who have used it to create books, including our wedding photog, who just wanted to get a sense of the quality and all loved it (the photog said it exceeded the quality of other products of a similar caliber). good luck with your project, no matter who you end up using.

just wanted to let you know that i used MP for my e-pics guestbook and it turned out great! I think the quality of pictures is better than any other program. You can’t edit on MP so you should definitly edit the pics before uploading. And it still takes way long on MP to upload your book (i had wireless DSL).

I tried using both MP and blurb software. I continued working with blurb over MP just because there were more layout options with blurb. I haven’t uploaded the book yet because I’m still working on it. It looks like its going to be a little over 100 pages so now I’m worried about the upload time.

I’ve used both MP and Blurb for photobooks. I used Blurb for our e-pic album, and I found the quality to be nice but not stellar. I was happy with the printing since they were professional pics. I didn’t notice any blurring. I like the dust jacket, but I don’t like that the inside cover is so plain. Just my personal preferrence, though. Still, for the price, it’s totally worth it. I’d probably use them again.

I used MP for a wedding album for my parents xmas gift (they never had an album, just a stack of 3×5 prints), and I have to tell you, I was impressed. I heard very mixed reviews about their classic books, but nothing but raves for the Deluxe books. I went deluxe, and I’m really happy with the results. The print quality is really good, and I was seriously amazed at the resolution considering how old and tiny my original pictures were. Love the linen cover with the picture window, too.

Miss E, did you change the dpi for the pictures? Even though you may have high megapixel pics, if you leave the resolution at less than 300 dpi, the quality may be compromised. Just something to keep in mind for your next foray into photobooks….

I used photoworks.com to make a photobook for my bf, and it turned out better than I expected! The price was great too, they’ve promo code all the time that you can just search online.
