Done and Done! : wedding honeymoon seattle Z321132 200px-Tour_eiffel_at_sunrise_from_the_trocadero

I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. We FINALLY have our honeymoon booked! Yay! Europe, here we come! We’re spending two weeks in France, Italy and England. We have our airline tickets to get us there–now all we have to figure out is where to go and stay in each country. While I have been to both France and England and lived in Italy, I can’t wait to experience it with Mr.Strawberry. Does anyone have any suggestion of must sees/places to stay/places to eat? :)

I’ve only been to London, and that was about 10 years ago. But of course, go to all the major attractions, and I wasn’t there when they had the big ferris wheel (can’t think of the name of it), and the dungeon. :D Changing of the guard is fun, too.

If you’re at all into seeing live theater, do a little research before going and reserve tickets to see a play in London. Compared to NYC, the theater scene in London is a bargain. The government-subsidized National Theatre in South Bank consistently churns out excellent productions at reasonable prices. Some of my other favorite theaters are the Royal Court in Sloane Square, Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden, and SoHo Theatre. I’m totally jealous of your trip itinerary…have a great time!

Congrats on booking! This weight is still waying on me, as we have decided on Brazil, but not sure where to go/stay/do when we get there.
I definatley reccomend Florence, and a day trip to Lucca and Pisa. Lucca and Pisa can be done in the same day. Lucca has a big path around the city that you walk around or can ride a bike. Very romantic. In Florence try to go to the piaza michalangelo for an amazing view of the city.
In rome my favorite muesum was villa borghesse. There were a lot of beautiful statues and paintings there and it is a on really pretty grounds. I stayed at this hotel in Rome. the location was amazing!!!http://www.albergodelsenato.it/flash/index.html
Cinque Terre is also a very good spot, especially if you are planning on doing some relaxing. I can’t offer much help on Paris, as I have only been there for a day. And have never been to Egland.

london is wonderful. whatever you do, ride a double-decker red bus :-). London Tower was really interesting, and visiting Hampton Court Palace, though expensive, is stunning.
I haven’t been to France myself, but if you’re into architecture at all the chateaux of the Loire Valley are supposed to be gorgeous.

Montparnasse Tower (Tour Montparnasse): they say it’s the most beautiful panoramic view of paris, especially all of it’s most famous landmarks.

Sainte-Chapelle: this was my favorite site to visit. practically the whole church is made out of stained windows. try it out early to mid afternoon when the sunlight’s at it’s peak. a definate must see.

MusÆ’©e d’Orsay: awe-inspiring.

for Italy…i loved sienna in tuscany. amazing italian countryside! cinque terre if you’ve got time. venice is also a classic italian stop.

And to add to my post…in London, make sure you visit Kensington Palace. The gardens are beautiful, and the tour of the palace is awesome! I also agree about the double decker bus tours!!! That was so much fun! :D I loved Trafalgar Square and all the pigeons…lol. And definately get your portrait done in Trafalgar Square. They have some amazing artists, and it’s VERY cheap to get one done! :D Try and go to Harrod’s department store. I didn’t actually get to go, because they were closed while I was there, but my Mom told me you can find everything from socks to elephant guns! LOL!!

I’ll try and think of what else we saw while we were there…I was 11…

I’ve never been to Europe but I’m dying to go to Italy. On the PBS channel, they have this great program called “Visions of Italy”, “Visions of France”, etc. You may want to check them out to get an idea of where you want to visit. I’m a big foodie so when I go to Italy *someday* I plan on visiting Sicily for their seafood and the Piedmont region for their Barolo wine and risotto. Good luck will all your planning!

Florence is a MUST! If you can stay on a olive grove, that would be great. We stayed in a little villa where you could see rolling hills of olive groves for miles. I was on a family vacation and it was great…I can’t imagine how romantic it would be for a honeymoon. Have fun — I’ve been to all 3 countries and loved them all. :)

My friend who went to grad school in paris recommends the latin quarter (greek area). She says it’s really lively at night and at a certain time, people start throwing plates on the ground and make lots of noise. I was there later at night (11pm?) and missed all the fun. Europe has a “dinner time” which is around 6-9pm I think and it’s a tad harder to get dinner later, but I haven’t had too many problems. Food in UK is REALLY BAD and $$, but eat LOTS in France. Also, pickpockets are PLENTY in Paris, so hold on to your bags.

This is such a huge question, but I’ll put in my 2 cents and if you’re interested in more, let me know and I’ll email you my itineraries and more detailed stuff (esp. restaurant and hotel recs).

My best friend and I stayed for a month in Italy, and I’ve traveled to London and Paris in the last 2 years with my boyfriend. My first tip is–buy the guide books now by Rick Steves for each country/city you’re visiting. His opinions have NEVER let me down and made my trips a ton of fun!
Italy–
Everyone I know who has visited the Cinque Terre (including myself) gushes. It’s stunning and relaxing and the foccacia is incredible… It can certainly be done in 2 days, but you’ll be sad to leave. When we were in Tuscany, we stayed at a beautiful agriturismo called Fattorio Voltrona. It was fun to have fresh, communal dinners under the stars with tourists from all over the world. Other highlights–the sistine chapel and the forum in Rome were incredible; I loved Pienza and Montepulciano in Tuscany; and the glittering mosaics of San Marco in Venice at sunset are pretty damn gorgeous.

London–We stayed in an apartment near Harrod’s department store. I recommend this. Walking and gawking at Harrod’s is a COOL way to spend a day (or 3!). I highly recommend the Capitale Hotel for a fancy dinner. I’ve recommended to friends who also loved loved this experience. Portobello Road Market is another must-do, IMO. Cool, cool antiques and people watching.

Paris–I echo previous poster who mentioned Rue Cler. This neighborhood is near the Eiffel Tower, and is where we stayed. (How fun was it to jog around the Eiffel Tower in the morning?!) Rue Cler is a place to wander and eat yummy pastries, cheese, chocolates. I have lots of great pictures here. (My boyfriend and I vow to get a place with a kitchen next time so that we can take more stuff back to our rooms to enjoy!) We had a fun night going to Laduree on the Champs Elysee super late (like midnight) for some amazing hot chocolate and macaroons (not the coconut kind). Highly recommend this. The Notre Dame at night is a spectacular sight to see, and the Louvre was surprisingly moving for me. (I was so close to blowing it off.)

Happy travels!

Also want to echo Alyson–Villa Borghese in Rome is a don’t miss, and Piazza Michaelangelo at sunset… (Random rec: If you visit il Duomo in Florence, I highly recommend climbing the bell tower in addition to or instead of the dome itself–you can actually see/get great pictures of the dome itself in the view of the city!)

I went to London for a class last spring. My suggestions:

- Even if you’re not religious, you should attend vespers at Westminster Abby. The service isn’t very long, and the mens/boys choir is amazing. Along the same lines, visit Westminster Cathedrial. The chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is the most beautiful room I have ever seen.
- Go to a pub for fish and chips. The group I was with went to a pub that is 100 years older than the US - very impressive.
- Go to a student recital. The tickets are cheaper than a show, the setting is more intimate, and the tallent is incredible.
- British Library: amazing collection of old books and artifacts, including one of the oldest Bibles in the world, origional music scores by Motzart, and Jane Austin’s writing desk. Featured in the center of the library is the King’s Library encased in glass.
- If you are a Harry Potter fan, just two blocks down from the library is Kings Cross Station with Platform 9 3/4. You don’t have to have a train ticket to see it, but you have to walk around a bit to find it. There’s even a cart going through the wall - great for wacky pictures!

Hope this helps!

This is the sandwich place. I ate there everyday for lunch when I lived in Florence. It is really good and really cheap!

If you’re going to Florence, you must go to Ristorante La Giostra!! It’s a small, intimate restaurant down a fairly small street. It’s nice because the owner greets everyone and he gives a free sampler appetizer (that’s what happened when my b/f and I were there 2 1/2 years ago!) Here’s the website: http://www.ristorantelagiostra.com/inglese/frameset.html
If you go there, you must make reservations. It’s a great restaurant! There’s also Golden View Open Bar Restaurant in Florence, right by the Pointe Vecchio. (The main bridge) It’s really nice also, because you overlook the water. You must make reservations there as well and ask to get a table with a view. Also, in Florence, if you have a chance don’t miss the Uffizi Gallery! That has some magnificent artwork like the Birth of Venus. Also, if you have a chance, try and take the bus to Fiesole the small town I think it’s north of Florence. You can overlook the whole city from that small town, since it sits on a hill. WONDERFUL VIEW!! Oh, oh, oh and one more thing! =) In Florence, there’s a small panini shop that has the BEST Paninis I’ve ever had - it’s down a small street right by the duomo, I wish I remembered the street! But it’s behind the church on one of the small streets. It’s really a hole in wall! Ok, I think I’m done! I hope you have time to hit up Florence, it really is a beautiful city with lots of history, culture and of course shopping! I spent 2 months in Florence and it wasn’t enough! =) Have fun!!

My boyfriend is British and having been to almost every spot in the country, my #1 vote would be to go to the Lake District in Northern England. It is the total opposite of busy London - pure, rolling green hills, gorgeous lakes, fluffy clouds. Home of Beatrix Potter, you will find total relaxation and quintessential English countryside there. (If you are getting total relaxation in the other countries and would like some time in a bustling city then London would be a better fit.) It is a national park so there are plenty of outdoor activities available, from kayaking to hiking to hot air balloon rides to horseback riding. You can take a train from London, or a quick 45 minute flight. The Lake District will also be cheaper than London, which is helpful in a time when the dollar is so weak to the pound. (If you do want some of the countryside but can’t get to the north part of England, then I’d suggest the Cotswolds, which is near Bath, which is also a nice city.)

The Lake District in Italy is also another pleasure (I guess I have a thing for lakes!) if you are interested in more off-the-beaten-path experiences. Any of the cities in Italy’s lake district are fantastic, like Stresa. Again this is just a train ride from Milan.

I’ve also been to Rome in Italy (I went this past August (HOT)) and my friend and I did a huge amount of the city in 5 days. I’ve got spreadsheets galore (way too much information to paste here) if you are interested- just send me an email :) You probably know this but if you go to Italy in the summer bring one of those tiny battery-operated fans. It won’t bring enough relief but it will help. ;)

My biggest piece of advice- BUY A GUIDEBOOK!!! No matter where you go, the guidebooks are going to be a time and money saver. I used Rick Steves’ guidebook for Rome and it was incredible.

Have FUN! (OK, maybe *that* is my biggest piece of advice, hee!)
