Menswear Color Help

December 29th, 2006 @ 3:12 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Okay ladies, I need your help. Mr. Kiwi and I are having an autumn themed wedding, complete with acorns and leaves and pumpkins. The problem? I have NO idea what the men should wear. Although I’ve posted this before, our colors are:

Mr. Kiwi will be buying a suit since he needs one, but we’re not sure of the color. I thought he could get a dark brown suit, but he thinks a tan (more like dark khaki) color would be nice. Keep in mind he’s a big guy, six foot two and three hundred+ pounds. At first we thought a tan suit with a rust colored shirt, and maybe a tan or gold tie. Is that waaaay too much color? Should he just get the tan suit with an ivory shirt and rusty colored tie?

Another problem: we’re not sure what color his brother and best man should wear. Does it all depend on Mr. Kiwi? Could Mr. Kiwi wear the tan suit, and the BM wear a brown one? Or does Mr. Kiwi have to be the same color, with different accents?

The next question is regarding the ring bearer: does he wear an identical outfit, or does he wear whatever we want him to wear? Can he wear a tux if the rest of the party doesn’t? He’s going to be four years old when we get married, and he’s a little guy. :) The wedding and reception is at 10am on a Saturday in November, so that really leaves the whole “short pants” suit out.

What are your thoughts? Help me!! I’m just lost.

Hi there,

Yikes, you sound like you’re really stressing!! I would just do a chocolate brown colored suit, cream/beige-ish colored shirt, and maybe a rusty colored tie…dont go too color crazy…I think neutral colors= more classic and put together looking, ya know??

Oh, sorry, I answered before you finished typing….Anyway, I think the answers to your questions depend on how formal your wedding is…does Mr. Kiwi not want to wear a tux? If he is wearing a suit, I would have all of the guys wear a suit too- either the same color or same color family-just have your FI wear a different shirt/tie combo to differentiate him from the rest of the party. For the ring bearer, dont put him in a tux if none of the other guys will be in a tux. A suit will be fine for him, again, stick with the same color family….
Good luck!!!

I have decided that my bridesmaid and MOH would wear black (so that they would be able to use their gown once more to a formal dinner or something) For my FI, he would somewhat reflect what my dress would look like. I have a champagne color of a dress, I would like his shirt in Ivory color and the vest and tie are champagne color.

here is the site for my gown,

I am still putting a look for both of my bridal party.

I’m sorry I have no input but where can I get that box where you have your wedding colors?

My fiance got a new suit for our wedding too. Though I wanted him to get a dark brown suiit, he vetoed me because he felt he would have more occasion to wear a gray suit more often. Which was fine. But he decided to wear an ivory or cream shirt and cream colored tie. It looks AWESOME.

Just have everybody wear regular tuxes and pick a colored tie if you want to coordinate. It’s November, not the summer. Any light color suit will be odd. Moreover, if all your men are in dark brown, and your kids are in tuxes, that may look odd, too.

Keep it simple.

I would definitely go with dark colors for Mr. Kiwi — my BF is about the same dimensions (maybe a little lighter), and I love him to pieces but his size does not lend itself well to light colors. Brown or black.

I would definitely go with a darker suit. Mrs. Ladybug did black tuxes with brown vests and ties and it looked really nice:

Your groomsmen should all match the groom and nothing beats a nice tux. :)

My husband wore a dark brown suit with white shirt and dark orange tie. It looked amazing (orange/red hypericum bout brought out the tie). His best men wore a lighter color tan suit with white shirt and the same orange tie (w/ brown hypericum bout). Everyone thought we were crazy when they heard about the tan/orange tie deal but they all loved and it looked great, especially with an October wedding. Very classy.

Definitely a chocolate brown pin-striped suit is sharp and unique! Then, have a cream colored shirt and a pale gold (kind of a neutral) tie embroidered with cream “flecks.”

Julie, that sounds absolutely amazing. I will definitely let him know about that combination!!
