Open Question: Placecards

December 29th, 2006 @ 10:30 am by Open Question

What are you ladies doing for placecards? My wedding is around Valentine’s Day and I am considering using valentines. The name of the person/couple/family would go on the outside of the envelope, and the table name/number would be written on the back of the valentine. Thoughts? Where to buy such valentines? Fiance would probably select Batman valentines from a drugstore. Any ideas for less juvenile valentines, or would it be fun for guests to receive the basic drugstore boxed valentines?

Thanks!

Iris

super cute! but you will probably have to wait and see what comes out in stores. I’m sure you could find something classy, and they will probably be out in stores as soon as they clear out the christmas candy etc…

Awesome Idea! try orientaltrading. They have a ton of valentine stuff. Also not sure what “look” you are going for, but antique looking valentines could be really nice, using doilies or something like that!

I totally think that would be adorable!!!! You guys could always just cut out some red hearts from construction paper, too. Maybe with some pinking shears or something to make the edges a little less crude? And on the front maybe like and I + (FI initial) in like, crayon and then the table info on the back, with the person’s name and table number. Actually, that could be the front, with the childlike crayon on the back. A little surprise. :) Or maybe I’m lame. :) Still either way, great idea!

I would think maybe trying to see what they have for V-Day stamps also. You can stamp your placecards with cute V-Day designs and color them in (would be lot of work but wellworth it at the end).

Loving the ideas, keep ‘em coming! Found these promising ideas online:

Square fold-up that opens to a heart shape:

Rubber stamp of tall tiered wedding cake w/ hearts on top:

I have Fiskars scissors that cut like an old-fashioned photo edge, which would help camouflage imperfect edges from hand cutting.

I’d like to second Alyson’s idea. I was thinking lace doilies on pretty paper would look lovely. I love this site’s paper: http://www.twistedlimbpaper.com/
Or just on card stock in your colors. Ohh! And you can use those little hearts with the words on them!

If you want unique, yet good looking valentines I’d try http://www.etsy.com. Some of the sellers on there have amazing custom cards.

Iris - I would love to help you with your valentine/placecards. We could design something and I could order all of the pieces and you could still have it be a diy project. You can email me at missraspberrybee@gmail.com

What about heart snowglobes/frames? You can put their name and table number in the frame part. I used snow globes as placecards at my wedding and they were a huge hit! Plus the guests can put their own photo in when they get home.

Miss Raspberry — I sent you an e-mail! : )

Meanwhile, I’m doing my research… having some trouble finding a tasteful quality valentine insert… Paper Source has some heart inserts but they are way too big and a bit pricey, and we don’t have one in NYC. Gift enclosure cards would work, but all are BOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING. Trying to go for Martha Stewart vs. Country Crafts. Not that I have time for all this.

Other placecard ideas I’ve thought of in the meantime (shortcuts to DIY overkill): Use a glassine envelope w/ guest’s name written on the outside, then inside, to indicate the appropriate table (use an identical one each table’s tall metal stand as a table marker) —

1) Playing cards. Just the card — it shows the table number without another word! Perfect for a couple that loves games or Vegas, or just to balance out estrogen-overload. For a couple that loves games, use odd board game cards from Uno, Old Maid, Monopoly, Clue, etc. would also work.

2) Postcards: Select a different design/locale for each table to reinforce the table name for each table. Super cheap, the photos will be perfect, plus it ties in theme tables (which are often based on geographic locations anyway).

The beauty of using the separate outer envelope (instead of the typical folded one-piece placecard) is that you can do the old switcheroo at the last minute, in case of absent or extra guests.

How to indicate the different meal selections on the outer envelopes? Stickers, crystals? (beef - red; chicken - yellow; fish - blue; vegetarian - green)
