MBT Shoes

December 30th, 2006 @ 6:00 pm by Mrs. Bee

Awhile back I heard about MBT (Masai Barefoot Technology) sneakers from a friend who swears by them, and I was intrigued. MBT sneakers have special multi-layered soles that are designed to change the way you walk, so you workout your entire body while you wear them. They’re supposed to tone your legs, back and stomach, and improve balance, posture, and varicose veins.

At around $250 per pair, they’re pricey but the reviews on Zappos are amazing. MBT’s are available in several different styles, colors, and heights.

Has anyone tried MBT sneakers? Are they really effective in helping you tone up?

I own a pair of MBT Sport Lows. They helped relieve some of my back pain due to scoliosis, improved my posture, and helped me walk properly. I recommend buying these shoes at a footwear specialist store such as Foot Solutions so they can fit you properly and advise you on how to walk in them. Just remember not to flex your toe when you kneel or crouch as you might break the fiberglass sole.

I wore mine for a month and didn’t tone up so now I just wear them occasionally.

Never even heard of them!

That’s interesting… expensive though. I wish I could afford it and try it sometime.

I fell into the hype and bought them a couple of years ago. They definitely do seem to work your legs more just by walking. Can’t say they’re the most fashionable shoes to wear out, but they’re a semi-decent “work-out” without much effort.

I have a pair and would be happy to sell them for $200 o.b.o. I run, so the benefit I might see from these is masked by my running. They are sixe 8, green and black. They are pretty cute, but after being chastised by my fiancee for buying yet another pair of athletic shoes, I would love to send them to a good home.

i bought them and wore them relgiously for about 2 weeks. even while i worked out with my trainer. but i agree, you do feel the muscles in your legs working just by walking in them. i guess i’m gonna have to start wearing them again…

Nothing is worth wearing a shoe that ugly. I say, traditional workout and attractive shoes!!

I think I only felt the effects of the shoes the very first time I wore them for a whole day. I started wearing them everywhere, but I don’t think it did anything. I stopped wearing them after wearing them continuously for 6 weeks. But I do still wear them when I go on walks.

I BOUGHT A PAIR, WORE THEM FOR ABOUT 2 WEEKS, I’M ON MY FEET ALOT AT WORK. LIKE THE WAY THEY MADE MY BACK AND LEGS FEEL.
UNFORTUNATELY, DUE TO THE UNSTABLE SOLE, I STOOD UP FROM A FORWARD FOLD POSITION QUICKLY AND THE SOFT HEEL OFFERED ME NO WAY TO STOP MYSELF FROM FALLING BACKWARD. I FELL INTO A PIECE OF MACHINERY AND BROKE 2 BONES IN MY RIGHT ARM. I AM NOW OUT OF WORK FOR 2 MONTHS. IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT THESE SHOES OR OWN A PAIR, BE VERY CAREFUL.

I was getting sort of lazy with my exercise routine and getting the MBT was a total boost in getting me going again — it is so much easier, fun and better for you than any other shoe I have ever used! THEY ARE JUST GREAT & AFTER THREE MONTHS OF WEARING THEM I FEEL BETTER TONED AND MORE FIT AND LIVELY!

I wanted to let all of you know there is a great tool for professionally fitting & buying MBTs online if you go to http://www.FeetFirstFitness.com it is much better than the Zappos link you are giving, because they only sell (and specialize in) MBTs! I got my shoes the same day I ordered them and they were a perfect fit — I traced my feet and faxed them in and http://www.FeetFirstFitness.com recommended which styles would be good for my feet and in which size…

Now that the MBTs are looking better in design you are starting to see a lot of them down here along South Beach.

Ciao from Miami! Kat.

While snow skiing, I incurred a tibia-fibula fracture at the plateau of my knee. After a year on crutches and therapy 3X @ wk, I still had to have a knee replacement. After surgery and another year of physical therapy, I could walk without support but my foot turned out as if I was in ballet 1st position regardless of all the strengthening exercises. My physical therapist recommended I give MBTs a try–I felt that I had nothing to lose and everything to gain–I would, at the very least gain a good sport shoe. I went to Foot Solutions for proper fit and bought a sport pair. That was two years ago. I wear nothing else–I own five different styles/pairs. Not only did my foot return to its proper walking position after three weeks, but I have lost 22 lbs of the 57 lbs that I gained while I was non-ambulatory–simply by walking. I am an educator–not too much walking there. I have lost two dress sizes–but most importantly, I can walk normally rather than like a hunchback. Mary 3/7/2007 has a good point though–you must be careful walking on uneven surfaces. The important thing to remember is to be mindful of one’s walking, heel first, rolling the foot to the toe. .

I bought a pair based on nurses my wife works with. After trying to use them for 2 weeks, they have caused my right foot to over-pronate and are killing my right knee. If they work for you (and they do for a lot of people) great. For me, they are a pair of $200+ paper weights. I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone.

I am thinking on getting a pair, but still debating since they are $$$ so can anyone tell me how they feel after using them for a year or so? has the sole warn out? do they last even?
Much appreciate anyones comments…
