Half-Up or All Up? Help!

January 1st, 2007 @ 2:47 pm by Mrs. Hibiscus

I had my first hair trial last week with Natalie Buketov. It went rather well. She also did my make-up, knowing I was already probably going to book with my first make-up artist. I let her know up front and she still did my make-up which I think is cool of her. I just don’t know whether to do my hair half-up or all up for the wedding. My fiance doesn’t give a clear answer of which he prefers and the vote goes about 50/50 from my friends. I’m not sure which style I like more - I’m having commitment issues. Maybe you readers can help me.

Here are the facts:
1. I’m getting married on the beach, which I think leans more toward a casual half-up do. But it is always windy on the beach which would lean towards an all updo. Haha see, how I confuse myself.
2. My dress is strapless, white and pretty fancy. It’s not your typical beach wedding dress. Haha I’m so detailed aren’t I? Can’t you just picture it now? I’m sorry. I’ll post pictures later!

Half-Up:

What do you think? Half-Up or all up?

I totally think half up would be amazing with your face. Also, with a strapless dress, I think it’ll really look fantastic. An updo with a strapless seems so formal to me. Half up on the beach seems fun.

I like the way it looks down. But it may feel more comfortable being all up, so when your dancing and what not? With it up, the 2 strips in front I’m not crazy about, I think it may look even better all pulled back?
Either way you’ll look gorgeous :)

I like half-up, but I don’t think the two curls are very flattering.

I agree with the other gals. I likeboth styles, would probably go withthe half up but either way I am not crazy about the two curls in the front. ; )

Why the curls in the front? It detracts so much from your beautiful face! Your hair is gorgeous and I think I like it best with it down. Just think of all those romantic pictures with your hair blowing out behind you on the beach :)

Half up half down looks amazing. Your hair is gorgeous and this style really shows it off.

I like it all up–without the two curls in the face. You look so pretty in both!! :)

I vote for half up! It will help balance out the fanciness of your dress, and be perfect for the beach.

Agreed with everyone else–the two curls in the face reminds me ofa high school prom in 1998. :-P

My God! I am so envious of your beautiful hair! Is it all yours or extensions? I lik the half up, but I think I would go for slightly looser curls to give it more of a beach look. The make up is nice and soft and seems to work with the halfup.

first off - both run-throughs look great!! :D
i personally like the half-up look better..i can totally picture your hair at a beach wedding~ i agree w/ the other ladies about nixing the two strands in the front..
also - if you are having a beach wedding..how about some more lighter/shimmery/goldish makeup?..in terms of eyeshadow at least? a glimmery glow would compliment a beach environment..just a thought~ maybe you could ask mrs. snail for her advice? your pics look great though!!

I think the up-do is very flattering minus the front two curls! Beautiful! If you like the two curls in the front, you can ask the stylist to pin them to the side of the hair-do and it’ll make a great alternative!

Both look great, but I think I’d go with the all up, including the front peices. It will show off your dress better and allow you to not worry about hair in your face if it is windy.

I think the half-up goes better with the beach wedding. But I do like the updo, except for the long tendrils in front. They look kinda, uh, dorky. I can’t think of a better word for it, sorry!

I think you should do half-up, it tends to look better with strapless dresses. I’m not crazy about the tendrils in front either, they’re a little bit too hair-sprayed and not loose and flowy.

Thanks for all the comments everyone! No extensions. My hair is pretty long and easily styled so it works out.

Also, the tendrils were my idea. I have issues with the roundness of my face….especially when I’m smiling. You can’t really tell here because all the pics are at an angle but I’m pretty insecure about it. Also, the tendrils would be shorter, no further than my chin. My stylist just didn’t want to cut them now but she will on the day of the wedding. If it looks that horrible I’ll consider not doing them….but like I said….I’ve always done that and I’m horribly insecure about it. :)

Well Miss Hibiscus, there should be ways of framing your face without a look that’s quite so…severe. I think it does help that they’ll be shorter on the day-of, and I’d also recommend having them be less structured…instead of pulling hair just from the top of your head, a little bit from all the way down the sides as well would frame your face better and, I think, look more natural. Personally, I have the same ‘problem’ and I use deep, sideswept bangs to help elongate my face. A looser, more voluminous look could help, too.

But please don’t think I’m being too critical! You (and your hair!) are gorgeous, and you’d still look amazing even if you didn’t change a thing for the wedding.

both are very beautiful, but I think all up is the way to go, without the curls in your face. You already have a pretty face w/o it.

If you’re getting married on the beach, there’s a good chance it will be windy. Pick whichever hairstyle will work well with wind. I agree with the other comments about the two curls in the front not being very flattering. In addition, if it’s windy, you could end up with those two curls in your face, over your eyes, and blowing around, sticking to your lipstick.

Maybe you can do the updo for the ceremony and let it half down for the reception so you can have both hairstyles, but without the two curly bangs on the front.

I agree with the half-up/half-down, no curls. And I bet you’d look fabulous without the two curls. I, too, have a round face, so I see what you’re saying, but I still vote no two curls. :)

You are blessed with such gorgeous hair! I think all up looks more sophisticated and formal- I can see how you might also appreciate it since you’re much less likely to get hair in your face and mouth during the ceremony with it all up. I love the idea of changing it for the reception and having it half down at that time. The eye makeup this time around is much more dramatic- I think somewhere in between the first makeup trial and this time around would be great as well.

I think all up is more practical but the half up is more flattering. I might like the updo more if you didn’t have the two curls in front. I didn’t find that flattering for you. No matter which way you go, I would pull all of your hair out of your face. Just a suggestion. Hope I didn’t offend.

I might just use your all up when I am trying to get my hair stylist to do my hair. Mine isn’t as long, but the soft curls are beautiful!

And as for which I like better, it is the all up, but that is because I’d rather have everything off my neck and out of my way. But I think the half up is beautiful and would make amazing pictures with the wind… so in the end, I’m not much of a help.

I think both looks would be great without the 2 tendrils in front. I think it takes away the attention to your face and draws too much unwanted attention to the tendrils.

My vote is half-up! Looks great and more suited to beach wedding, and will help dress down your formal dress a touch. The all-up looks fine and all, but very typical/standard wedding hair, while you’ve got the natural hair to pull off the fabulous half-up look.

*OK, my caveats are: Leave all-up as a backup plan to be decided on the day of, as if it is super-hot or superwindy then maybe go all-up. However, I went to a beach wedding with a serious 10-20 mph steady wind and the brides’ chin-length, all-down, slightly curled hair held up fine due to the skills of the hairdresser and her generous use of products. So I wouldn’t count out the half-up hair on account of wind.

love the up-do, but i’m not too keen on the tendrils in the front.

because you have such dark hair, it breaks up your face and screams for attention. whereas, pulling ‘em back would let you shine through as the blushing bride you were meant to “bee.”

All-up because if you’re really formal and fancy on the beach, you’ll really stand out and it’ll be easier for you to manage your hair if the beach is windy that day. Or you could do a bun but leave a few curled strands out a la Keira Knightly in Pirates of the Caribbean (1st movie, the scene where she falls into the water b/c her corset’s too tight.) Or you could wear a hat but I’m not sure if it would match your dress.

Half up looks MUCH better. I’d especially choose that if you insist on having the tendrils (curls) on the side of your face. But really, I don’t think your face looks round at all!
