Open Question: Bridal Potraits

January 1st, 2007 @ 1:27 pm by Open Question

For those of you who have taken them, were you at all concerned that your dress would become dirty or worse before the wedding? If you were concerned, what steps did you take to insure the safety of your gown during the photo shoots? Especially those of you who took your bridal potraits outdoors. TIA!

I’m a bride but also a professional photographer, so here are my tips:
-Stop by home depot or something similar and get a clear plastic drop cloth to put down anywhere you plan to sit or stand that your gown will touch
-Bring an extra white washcloth or two in case something is wet and you have to dry it off first or if it’s dusty, with white you can double check to see if its super dirty before you sit on anything
-Bring an extra person to help carry your stuff, veil and train…. the photographer should concentrate on taking your picture, not haveing to help carry extra stuff so make sure to bring enough help
-Finally, plan as though you’ll have to get your dress spot cleaned. That way you’ll have it accounted for in the budget and in your time schedule in the event that you do get it a little dirty. HTH!

Mrs. Bee

we took pictures around the city in 3 different locations before our wedding. i didn’t really take any special precautions other than to be extra careful. i did have shout wipes and chalk in my emergency kit, but my dress ended up being fine and i didn’t use them. my dress was filthy tho after the wedding, but the cleaners got all the stains out.

one thing i did do was bring two friends with me that helped me with my dress, carried my bouquet… they really helped out a lot so it’s a good idea to have an “assistant” that’s not going to be in the pictures (if your wedding party is going with you).

the drop cloth dori mentioned sounds like a good idea. good luck!

I think another alternative is to do a day-after shoot (check out my blog by clicking on my name–I recently wrote about day-after shoots). Although all previous suggestions seem like they’d do the trick. :-)

I have seen dresses truly mangled after a wedding (like Mrs. Bee said) including busted bustles and BLACK rims around the bottom from dirt and mud! But, if you can wing it and the dress still looks good, I like the idea of the day-after!
