Altar Ideas - Again

For a long time I was unsure where our actual ceremony venue was going to be - the church Mr. Kiwi works for or our reception venue. After a long drawn out discussion, we decided to stay at the venue. But being slightly anti-floral (when it comes to arrangements), I’m now left with how to decorate a tent.

As I posted in my Not So Secret Garden blog, I’ve always imagined topiaries or potted trees marking the altar. Since we’re not going to have an actual altar, I thought this was best to convey the actual “this is where we take our vows” sentiment. Another hurdle? I am sooo not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars on potted plants when we live in an apartment. Really, what can you do with an ivy topiary after the wedding?

While looking for ideas, I wound up at Costco and saw these:

Single ball ivy $ 39.99 and 22 inches tall

Double ball ivy, $249.99 for two. 46″ tall.

I’m about five feet tall, so should I get something taller or shorter? Weddingbee reader Adrienne commented that she’s using rosemary trees. I love rosemary and I love this idea. Anyone know where to find affordable potted rosemary?

you could always elevate the topiaries on a pedastal which might be cheaper than going with the tall topiaries.

i second mrs. bee on elevating them.

topiaries aren’t my thang, but i do like the famous MS image of tulle-wrapped topiaries. it dresses them up a little and keeps them from feeling too stuffy.

I bought mine at Lowes. They had two sizes. The smaller were $16 and the larger were $24. I have two smaller ones that are a little worse for wear in Missouri if you’d like to come get them. I have photos on my xanga of the way they looked in the church.

try calling your local nurserys to see if they’ll “rent” out their trees or topiaries.

I had the most amazing idea. Okay, I never tried it so I’m not sure if it’s amazing. Anyway, I thought of using tomato stakes and covering them with sheet moss. You could leave them plain green moss or stick flowers in. Easy and cheap….I think.

I am sticking flowers in my topiaries, which I’ve seen in a couple places. Of course gerberas don’t grow on topiaries, but the look is still very nice. Check out my knot bio (it was in the posted extravaganza of knottie bios recently). wsukarebear
