Open Question: Negative Transfer

January 3rd, 2007 @ 3:47 pm by Open Question

Hello Fellow Weddingbees,

I am looking for a reliable place to have my wedding picture negatives transferred onto CD. Originally when our photographer asked us if we wanted the pictures all on CD, I said no because I didn’t think I needed them. As our photographers did a combination of digital and 35MM photos, I have some on CD but it seems that the better pictures are the 35MM ones!

Since I got married across the country, I don’t want to risk mailing the negatives back to the original photographer. I also don’t want to pay $75 a CD as one place quoted me. Any ideas? I live in the Philadelphia area but my husband works in NYC so any help in those areas would be appreciated! Some people have told me to just go to a place like Wal-Mart or Target but that makes me a little nervous¢¢â€š¬¦

If anyone has any thoughts or has done this and can give me a realistic estimate of a price that would be great.

Thanks,

Mrs. Snowbride

We paid $20 a cd and live in the Seattle area. I would call a few local photographers and get their suggestions on where this can be done. Good luck!

There can be big quality differences when scanning negatives. Frankly, I would pay the $75 if it was a reputable place with a high resolution scanner and they were willing to work with you if any of the scans showed dust or anything. I’m sure you can pay less but I would ask about what kind of quality they get.

I believe Spectra is used by good photographers in the NYC area

Thank you, I had no idea there was any difference. The place that told me $75 was just a chain photo developer. I will call Spectra in NYC and see what they say.

If you’re up for the DIY version… you can buy a negative scanner (Costco.com even has them) to scan them yourself :)

I’d go to Ritz Cameras (or known as Wolf Camera, Kits Camera or something else :) ). I used to work there, so I know they do them by hand, charge a reasonable price and care that they are done properly. Just a suggestion. They are a national change.

Our photographer recommended mpix.com for a variety of photography related services and I saw that they do negative transfer. I’m not sure of the cost, though.
