Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • alyson is having a bachelorette party in NYC this Saturday. She’s been to spa , strip dancing, karaoke and a sex toys demonstration bachelorette parties. Does anyone have any other suggestions for things to do?
  • Stefanie is looking for NY restaurants for either a cocktail party or luncheon bridal shower. She’s been searching high and low but can’t find a place that will accomodate 50 people, has nice decor, and is reasonably priced.
  • Mimi has two quotes for letterpress invites/RSVP’s/envelopes - $1145 from Pearl & Marmalade and $1495 + ($300 custom design) from Hello Lucky. Is this the average for letterpress?
  • Mimi also wants to do her own save the dates using the Cavallini bird stamp kit but can’t find a magnet site that has plain magnets where she can order text printed on one side and do the stamp on the other side. Any suggestions?
  • JW wants to know which vendors to tip and what the usual percentages are.

Mimi - as for the save the dates, do you have access to a scanner? You can scan the image and use it as a graphic and design your STDs to be printed out with text and the birds online! (ie. Vistaprint) Let me know if you need help!

Mimi,

That is in the ball park, but you are leaving out a couple of important aspects. I price things similarly but it all depends on the quantity, paper and its availibility (some specialty papers are really expensive!), number of ink colors and the brides deadline. Typically you can expect letterpress printing to be double what offset printing will.

What you need to know about letterpress is that it is labor intensive. In my Letterpress Studio I hand feed each sheet in to the press. The presses are 100+ years old so they have their individual quirks and respond differently to paper, ink and make ready. Also registration becomes something that needs to be monitored if you have multiple colors. If a sheet is not giving me the results I want I dial the press in to make it work. Letterpress gives you that hand made feel when you get a clean deep impression in the paper. When you use letterpress you are paying for those types of things.

Take some time to look and see if there are smaller letterpress print shops in your area. You don’t have to use the first one that pops up in google. I have worked with brides on a tight budget and with those that are not. Your letterpress printer should be able to supply you with some alternative ideas if you need to save a bit. You might not be able to get all of the parts of your wedding package letterpressed for your budget but a good printer will be willing to give suggestions on how to keep the look you are going for by combining a few printing methods and still keep the integrity of you design and look. You might only be able to have you main invitation letterpressed. But if carefully thought out all the pieces will work together wonderfully without having people question your decision.

Sure buying out of a catalog at a stationary store is easy but you end up taking things at the stated value. No wiggle room. No alternative suggestions. Working one on one with a Letterpress printer just might get that letterpressed look you seek at a price that you can manage.

Mimi - They have an option where you can upload your design on the magnets. You’ll need to use a graphics program to design the image (they have templates) but it can easily be done… especially if all you’d want is the image and words! Or… you could just design the words and stamp as you wanted… the first option might save your hands some work! :)

Hello, I’m thinking of buying a ring for my “something blue” on my big day. I plan to use it after the wedding as a sort of “right-hand ring” and a substitute for my engagement/wedding bands when I’m doing work where they might be damaged. Here is a picture of rings and price ranges - I’m just wondering which ones people like the best.

Alyson - I am not from NYC, so I cannot recommend a place but there is a bead shop close to where I live and I saw that they offer ‘party service’ - so you have a party in at the evening, at the shop with champagne and cocktails and cake and all and at the same time you participate in a jewellery making workshop where you can use as many beads as you want. Your bridesmaids could even make their own bridesmaid necklaces there. I think many bead shops offer similar services.

I love the idea of wedding fortune cookies. I found some cheap ones from Oriental Trading but I’m not crazy about the generic message. They say something to the extent of “Thank you for joining us on our wedding day.” I’m looking into ordering some cookies with personalized messages instead. I want a message or messages that are fun, quirky, cute and romantic. I can’t seem to come up with something cleaver - Does anyone have any good ideas?

Haha, I like flowers too… that’s why there are so many repeating designs. There were even a few more similar to those, but they were more like $300, so they had to be eliminated.

Mrs. Bee, if you see this, could you add my question to the next hive? I’m not sure many people will see it in this one. :/

Stefanie,

Check out Opia on 57th and Lex. They have several rooms and can accomodate different size groups. I had my shower there, there are a few pics posted here:
