Matte vs. Dewy

January 4th, 2007 @ 10:33 am by Mrs. Apple

Bill and Debbie Jensen Photography suggest that “brides avoid wearing frosted or glossy makeup. The flash tends to pick up and accentuate this shine. Matte finish makeup is more desirable for photographs.”

At a previous makeup trial, Pam at the Nordstroms’ Laura Mercier counter used this tinted moisturizer to give my face a glow, and she highlighted my cheeks, chin and nose.

This was a dewy, natural or romantic look, but I’m not sure if I should go for a more matte, classic look. Carefair has a good explanation of the four basic bridal looks: classic, dramatic, natural, and romantic.

Do you have any tips on what looks better - matte or dewy - in photographs? What makeup style are you planning to have on your wedding day?

Sorry, I don’t have any tips. I was just wondering how if CareFair could possibly be incorrect about advising you use foundation lighter than your actual skin tone? I wouldn’t want my face to not match my neck and chest, and think it would be hassle to apply makeup on those areas in addition to the face…

I totally agree that flash can make makeup look really different. I had some trials that looked great in the daylight, but looked awful awful awful when I took pics of myself with flash at night. My skin didn’t just look oily and shiny… the flash created this odd, eerie glow!

Your makeup looks great in that photo! =o) But it was taken in the daylight.. make sure you test it at night with flash!!

Thanks Mrs Ant! That was a great tip, never even thought about taking trial photos at night with flash. I guess I do need to test both and compare. -)

I haven’t explored much into the makeup world yet for my wedding day, but just wanted to let you know how fantastic this looks on you! It looks almost natural and the foundation is blended nicely so you’re not two toned! I love it! =)

i don’t mind caking it on for the wedding lol because i need all the help i can get. i went for a more classic matte look for my wedding day. while i love how natural this makeup trial looks on you, i personally would want a little more drama on the eyes for a wedding day. but whatever you decide to do, i’m sure you’ll be beautiful!

one thing about taking your own photo with a flash… the flash that most people have on their own personal cameras is a direct flash that will directly point to your face in an unnatural way. a professional photographer’s camera usually will have a diffuser (often times a white box over the actual flash) that will make the flash softer and not as harsh as a personal camera. so i wouldnt automatically assume a photo taken with your own camera would rule out a good makeup artsist.

In general, I think matte looks better in photos, but the way your makeup artist highlighted your face looks great — just make sure any shimmer is only in those highlighted areas and not all over your whole face. I’m going to go matte, except for a few shimmery highlights around my eyes. You look beautiful Barbara!!! And Bee, you so do NOT need “all the help you can get!” You are beautiful too. :)

JJ makes a good point about a professional photog’s flash diffuser. But I knew that my friends would be taking their own flash photos on their digital point-and-shoots.. and I preferred to have makeup that looked great in everyone’s photos (not just my pro photog’s). I’m glad I did that because a lot of my guests’ photos ended up on public galleries (like flickr, myspace, xanga, and facebook)

You are gorgeous to begin with so I don’t think you need a whole lotta makeup. I would keep your makeup but ask for more powder in the t-zone area to matte out the shine.

ooo miss appleeee~ you look yummo. have you decided for sure that you’ll be getting your makeup done at one of the makeup counters? i’ve played with this option but i wasn’t sure about the quality… are most professional makeup artists? anyways i think your makeup turned out beautifully natural!

I think you look fantastic! I like the natural look; it will photograph beautifully. I went generally matte, but I had a nice dewy touch to my lips. I especially liked how I looked in black and white photos. Your trial results are gorgeous! :)

i love laura mercier’s tinted moisturizer and the dewy finish. however it my skin does tend to get oily mid-day, so you should definitely wear it for a day and take tons of pics to see how it turns out.

I use LM’s tinted moisturizer. It evens out your skin tone nicely and is not as heavy as regular foundations. But I’ve read more than once that SPF will change the way you look in your pictures …. I wonder if it’s true?

Miss Peach, I’m not sure what the percentage of counter makeup artists are professional makeup artists. But I think you really should try at least 2 different counters (depending on what makeup line you use or are interested in). I think if you do more than 2-3 makeup trials with different artists you can become confused (at least for me this is true).

I think the true test will be after each trial, doesn’t matter if he/she is certified but more so the results of her/his work.

Just try them for fun one weekend and see if you’re comfortable with someone working on your face.

I still am weighing the pros and cons of hiring a makeup artists. They’re are just so expensive - at least $200+ for a couple of hours or I can drag my butt to the makeup counter and just pay tip. I even thought about doing it myself on the day of the wedding but I think with my hectic schedule, fatique, stress level I probably will end up hiring one.

Anyways, best of luck with the trials!
