About Mrs. Orchid

After we got engaged my FI and I moved in together. Right now we are living in a 1 bedroom apartment in Long Island close to where we both work. Prior to that we were both still living with our parents. We are planning to buy a home for ourselves in a few years, when Mr. Orchid is finished with his residency. Planning and financing a wedding while trying to buy a home is too financially stressful for us right now. We plan to start saving up for our new home immediately after the wedding, and we should have a good amount to start with by the time he’s done.

Which got me wondering…

Where will you be living after you get married?

FI and I are both college students, living away from our hometowns. He will graduate mid-May and hopefully have a job to move for (we are planning on living in my hometown, a Kansas City suburb, because it has a much better job market than his northcentral small Kansas hometown). I will stay in our college town for a few weeks after his graduation and then live with my best friend/MOH for a few weeks prior to the wedding. Both of our moms are extremely against living together before marriage (something we don’t agree with), and we don’t want to cause any issues.

Funny enough on my second round, my FI and I are living apart until we get married. Who knew? Some of our friends have had it where a few weeks or a couple of months before the nuptials are official, they go look for a place and one or other will move in and set up “house”.

In this case, we’re still up in the air, as I have a really nice flat in a nice area. Where as he is just renting a room somewhere.

I didn’t expect to see “living with parents” as an option, so that’s really interesting to me, though I thought it was socially frowned upon.

Huh.

ldsbride - I think living with parents is more of a cultural thing. While I understand that in western cultures this is socially frowned upon, in asian cultures (more so the families in Asia, rather than Americanized families) it is not unusual at all.

To continue Miss Orchid and ldsbride’s discussion, even my own Asian parents who have been living in North America for about twenty years, have recently been rumbling about buying a bigger house so we could stay with them if we choose to.

This topic hasn’t come up in any of the discussions I’ve had, so could someone explain why living with parents is socially frowned-upon in Western culture? I’ve been trying to figure it out, but beyond the fact that it might show a lack of independence and a resistance to moving on with a new married life, I can’t quite come up with an explanation… Thanks in advance!

In regards to Lulu’s question - I think part of the way Americans define themselves is as independent, self reliant, and able to pull themselves up by their own boot straps. We’ve all been told we have to make our own way in the world, America offers us the opportunity and all we have to do is be industrious enough to take it. I think for most Americans when they hear an adult child is living at home it means this person is not independent, can’t make it on their own and are mooching off of/taking advantage of their parents. Now of course there are many reasons why someone would still be living at home with their parents that doesn’t involve any of these but I think the reason why it’s frowned upon is b/c of the American attitude of “do it yourselfness.” I think most Americans consider leaving home at 18 or 21 and never needing to go back a sign of “success.”
