Anniversary Dance

January 5th, 2007 @ 2:48 pm by Mrs. Orange

The anniversary dance is a special dance for all the married couples at a wedding. Throughout the song, the DJ names off number of years being married, starting with less than one year [That's when the newlyweds are off the dance floor]. It continues with less than two years, five years, ten years, and so on until the couple who has been married the longest is left dancing.I saw this for the first time at my friend’s wedding and plan on having it at our wedding as well. Mr. Orange’s grandparents just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year and I know of another couple attending who celebrated their 50th anniversary last February.

So far, our candidate for the song for the dance is Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. Are you including an anniversary dance in your reception? If so, to what song?

We had an anniversary dance. Unfortunately the DJ did it backwards so that couples were added to the dance floor and no one knew which couple had been married the longest! Oh well. We used L-O-V-E by Nat King Cole.

I love this idea! We used it for our wedding and found out my husband’s great aunt & uncle were married the longest (I thought for sure my grandparents at 55 years would make it).

We used “Young at Heart” by Frank Sinatra since I wanted something the older generation would recognize. Other good ones might be “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore”, “Come Fly with Me”, or anything by Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, etc.

I have been to a wedding where they butchered this and then a few weddings where it’s been fantastic!

All have used “Through the Years” by Kenny (Rogers, maybe?). It’s such a good song, reminds me of amy grandpa, and makes me tear up every time! :-)

Nice choice Miss Orange! I think we’ll skip the anniversary song since we’re having a small wedding and not a lot of couples will be attending.

we are doing it and actually instead of the bouquet toss- we will give my bouquet to the couple married the longest.

We didn’t do an anniversary dance, but my husband’s brother … and best man … was celebrating his 11th wedding anniversary on the SAME DAY as our wedding! :)

We surprised them by having the band announce their anniversary, and played “It Had To Be You” which was their first dance at their wedding. They were very touched.

Our anniversary dance used progressively older songs the longer it went on. The bouquet and garter went to my “Uncle” Charlie and “Aunt” Evelyn, at 44 years.

We will be getting married in December and we are using “Fly Me To The Moon” by Frank Sinatra.

I guess I really should clarify with the DJ, eh?

We used a song called “Congratulations, Happy Anniversary” by Nesbit Chhangur.
Kind of a fun, rock n roll thing!

Shorter
As Time Goes Buy by Jimmy Durante 2:24

Magic Time by Van Morrison 5:01

Both with lyrics appropiate for the situation.

I am a DJ. Usually the anniversary dance takes more than one song. I usually start out with a newer song first, then a song about 20 to 30 years old. For the Third song I always use “Same Ole Me” by George Jones and narrow it down to the final couple early in the song so that they can dance to that song.

We’re using “I love you more today than yesterday” but a slower version by James Darren. I’m so excited! Should we give something to the winner? Or let them give us “advice” with the DJ’s mic? I think it will be my fiance’s grandpa who would like that chance!

We use the song “Remember When” by Alan Jackson. There are many trigger points in the song where you can make announcements without talking over the lyrics. You can easily do the anniverary dance in one song. We have used this song for years and it works wonderful!!
