Beehive

January 5th, 2007 @ 2:00 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • kne is looking for a wedding planner in NYC. She has all the big stuff down but would like help with some smaller items, final touches, and day of services. She also has no idea what is “reasonable” in terms of price.
  • twelvetigers is thinking of buying a right-hand ring as her “something blue,” and as a substitute for her engagement ring/wedding band when shes doing work where they might be damaged. She’d like your opinion on which of these rings in her price range you like best.
  • Laura found cheap fortune cookies at Oriental Trading but isn’t crazy about the generic messages. She’s looking into ordering cookies with personalized messages but can’t seem to come up with anything clever, fun, quirky, cute, romantic. Does anyone have any good ideas?
  • Jasmine is looking for pictures of centerpieces using baskets… she’s not internet savvy. :)
  • Areum wanted an engagement ring/weddingb band set so they’d match, but a very unique e-ring caught her eye that’s almost impossible to match unless she spends a lot of money. Would it be weird if she just had an e-ring and no band?
  • D is looking for a videographer in the NYC/LI area for less than $1500. Any recommendations?
  • GK is looking for good places to look for DIY invitations and programs. She’s pulling her hair trying to come up with the most cost efficient way to do this.

I like b, h and l the best. Where did those rings come from? I was thinking about doing the same thing.

I found them all over the internet. I Googled “sapphire ring” and “blue ring” and things like that. Some are blue topaz, some are alexandrite, some are tanzanite, and some are lapis. And sapphire of course. If there are any in the pictures that you especially like, I can send a link to the site you can purchase it from. In general, http://bluenile.com has lots of fancier (and pricier) rings, and some other places I had good luck looking are:

Laura, you might consider quotes that you like, possibly ones that are funny or love related. There are lots of “quote mills” on the internet that let you search by subject, like http://quotationspage.com or http://quoteland.com or http://brainyquote.com . Or just Googling “love quotes.” :)

As a faithful reader (I check Weddingbee numerous times a day!) I noticed that there has been a lot on the topic of engagement rings. My fiancÆ’© and I are in the process of finding the perfect ring. I’ve only been looking at bridal sets because I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of trying to match my wedding band to my engagement ring, or having to get it custom made¢¢â€š¬”because we are on a budget. Unfortunately, an e-ring caught my eye, and my fiancÆ’© and I both feel that it’s the perfect ring for me. It is a very unique ring and getting a wedding band for it to match will be almost impossible without having to spend a lot of money on it. My question is: Would it be weird if I just had an e-ring and no wedding band? Is that too untraditional? My fiancÆ’© will have a wedding band..but is a wedding band for myself necessary? Please help!!

Laura, depending on what you’re going for you could definately do “punny” stuff like “So fortune to have you here to celebrate with us! Laura and X, and the date” or “Thanks for believing in our future!” or something like that.

Or you could be regular fun (vs pun-ny) and do fortunes for people to open like “A wedding is in your future” or “Your next kiss is your true love” or things like that that are love/wedding/marriage related. Just thoughts. :)

kne - a nyc based day of coordinator will run you at around $2000-$2500. a li based coordinator will run significantly less. i know a lot of planners in nyc, like in any event (my planners) so let me know if you’d like more referrals. :)

Areum I am in the same situation as you. My engagment ring is very unique and a traditional band will not fit flush with it. Definitely anything goes these days and you don’t have to wear a wedding band, but I personally would not want to be without one. I am considering wearing my engagment ring on my right hand and the band on my left hand, or just having a little gap between them if I wear them both on my left hand. Having a wedding band is significant and important to me because it will signify to me and the world that I have made the transition and am married, but if you and your FI don’t have any problems with you not wearing a wedding band, I say do what makes you happy!

Areum, I agree with LA. You can wear either ring on your right hand if you feel it’s important to have both, but if it doesn’t matter then I don’t think you would be chastised for only having one ring. I’m getting my rings sautered together anyway, so it might as well have been one whole ring to start with!

12tigers: all of the rings are lovely but i definitely love J & L … i never thought of that … of having another ring for “everyday” use.

also, for those who have gone to all-inclusive resorts, whether for fun or honeymoon, where would you recommend? FYI, our honeymoon will be in july. preferably we’re were conteplating either the caribbean or mexico.

Well, I just retired my class ring and my finger feels so naked. Yes, my high school class ring. I’m such a young’n. Right hand rings are popular these days, so I think it’s suitable.

Areum, I’m just ditto’ing LA as well. My short, stubby fingers and my very unique e-ring will pretty much prevent me from wearing the two rings together on one hand. I’m probably going to just get a band I like and then wear on two separate hands or wear one or the other depending on the day. I’ve also considered not doing the wedding ring at all, but my poor grandma would probably have a heart attack.

Since my fiance is getting the cheapest ring possible (he’s already told me he’s not going to wear it) he couldn’t care less about what I do.

GK-

If you are looking for DIY invites, I would love to help you.

I own Haute Papier in Washington DC and have worked with several brides who want to have DIY invites. We work together to design the invite and then I order and collect all of the papers and supplies for you and then put together specific directions and you are on your way!

My prices are very reasonable, especially for the DIY invites. If you would like more info, email me at info@hautpapier.com

:)

Areum: I’m in the same boat, and I’m either going to wear a band on my left hand and the e-ring on my right, or we’re going to re-use the e-ring as the wedding band (which is what my mom did for her second marriage).

GK: These are the DIY invites we’re using, only I’m probably going to swap out the ribbon for silver, and we’ll tie a tiny starfish to the front of each one:

I was wondering if it is okay to have a rehearsal lunch? Our venue is having an event in the evening and we wouldn’t be able to rehearse the ceremony there (we would have to pretend in someone’s backyard!). But it is available in the morning. I was thinking we could rehearse at our venue in the morning, have a nice lunch afterwards, which would leave the evening free for us to relax with our families and get any last-minute problems or details fixed. So, is a rehearsal lunch okay? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I don’t see why a lunch would be a problem at all. Who ever said it HAD to be dinner? All that’s differnt is the time of day and, I guess, what you would order to eat? As long as you get the chain of events down, I can’t see why it would matter if it were lunch or dinner.

My mother wants to have a small ceremony at her house and then a dinner at some restaurant afterwards. No reception. She says since my fiance and I live together, we don’t need the presents that are given at a reception. To me a reception is about a celebration to share with family and friends, not about presents! I feel like she’s trying to create a family reuinion for my 7 siblings and I instead of a happy wedding celebration. How do I tell her what I want, when I’ve already told her what I want?

Thank you so much for the advice ¢¢â€š¬” I’m so excited to know what is reasonable and have some places to start.

Mrs.Bee I’m researching in any event right now but any additional suggestions are welcome ¢¢â€š¬” I live in NYC but the actual reception and wedding is in Westchester (if that impacts the suggestions at all). I know you did a lot of work when you hired in any event (from your old posts) so I would certainly appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Thanks so much! KNE
