Fake Eyelashes

January 5th, 2007 @ 6:13 pm by Mrs. Plumeria

I’m planning to do my own makeup, and I want it to look fairly natural, but I’ve always wanted to try wearing false eyelashes, especially after seeing some of my friends with them on. Out of all of my facial features, I want to play up my eyes the most, and as eyelash extensions are definitely out of my price range, I decided to give false ones a shot.First step was purchasing some. I headed to Long’s Drugs on a week when Ardell lashes were on sale and then spent some time brooding in front of the display case, trying to choose a pair. I picked up one that didn’t look too thick and unnatural, put it in my bathroom with my makeup, and forgot about it. When I finally did get a chance to try them, they looked odd — too straight across and even. Perhaps it was also because I had never applied eyelashes before, but whatever the reason for the awkwardness of the results, I decided straight off that I couldn’t use them for the wedding. (No pics. Too horrible. Plus I forgot to take any.)

Ardell lashes, below.

So, I continued the search and found two brands that seemed different than the others: Sonia Kashuk, from Target, and Japonesque, which I discovered during a Christmas shopping trip to the Beauty Source. For my eyes, which have small, straight Asian lashes, these seemed like they would seem more natural because of the way they crisscross; it helps them to blend much better with my own lashes and seem less like a strip of evenly-spaced little hairs.

Japonesque lashes, in their case, below. Sonia Kashuk’s lashes look very similar to this and are available plain or with (kind of Halloween-y) crystals.

I tried the Japonesque lashes the other night, as well as some of my other makeup I’m planning to use for the wedding, just to get a feel for what the whole package will look like. Though I did not apply anything with a heavy hand and didn’t spend a lot of time to make it perfect, I felt it was a good try overall. A few more “trials” and I think I’ll be set…

My eyes beforehand. Me = tired.

After, with makeup. What a difference! I am so not used to having lashes. Also, I am so not used to taking pictures of myself…

This concluded my second attempt at applying lashes. Overall, so far, so good, I’d say, and I’m sure I’ll get a little better at it as I repeat my efforts. So, the big question: should I use them for the wedding? Who else in the hive is thinking of using them? :)

they look great! i’ll def be wearing fakies for my wedding day. i just advise that you try applying and wearing these ALL day. when i apply fake lashes myself, they never stay on very well and will start peeling off at the corners after an hour.

also, with the ardell ones… try trimming off 3 or so sections before glueing them on and see if you like them better.

you should definitely wear false eyelashes for your wedding. they look great on you and they really make your eyes pop in photographs!

i love false eyelashes - esp the individuals which are harder to apply but look really natural. shu uemura also makes nice lashes for asian eyes.

One of the tricks with lashes is to make sure to cut them down so they fit the outer 2/3 of your eye– apparently they look much better and more natural (and less costume-like) when you try it. I’m wearing them, but I’m having my makeup done by someone who’ll also apply the eyelashes (I’m sure I’ll be a bit nervous by then!)

Hmm. This is hard. Of course, the one person so far who says nay is the person who used to live w/ me in college and knows what I look like every day. :) (Yeah Jas… I’m not sure yet… I like it and yet I wonder if it makes me look not lik e me. I think Mrs. Ant had this problem too. I guess I’ll have to try it out for a longer period of time and see!! Miss you.)

Yes…you should use them!!! They will definitely look great especially in your pictures. I wore them when I was a bridesmaids..and my eyes look so much bigger.

I used the lashes from MAC. They look really natural..and you can trip them to fit your eye. Good stuff!

They look great on you!

I love the look of false lashes, but they feel weird on my lids.

I like the lashes that are criss-crossed. I have some from Tish and Snooky that I like, they are similar to the ones you have, but thicker and with glitter.

how on earth do you keep your (asian) lashes curled? when i try falsies i end up with two completely seperate tiers of lashes because mine won’t hold a curl =T

Miss Plumeria, you are too cute! The eyelashes look great on you-very natural !

I’ve had fake lashes put on before, they were so heavy on my eyelids that by the end of the day I wanted to peel those suckers off ! I think it depends on which ones you wear too. Your lashes look great though!

I say use them! They really accent your eyes beautifully. I am planning on wearing them myself. I have short lashes that are think in some spots. I love my eyes and love to play them up, so I’ve always wanted to wear fake eyelashes, but have never tried. I figured my wedding would be a great day to do it!

Thanks for the compliments everyone… we shall see! I’ll have to try ‘em for a full day first. :) And Amy, I totally know what you mean. I had to crimp my lashes multiple times before they’d stay. I like Shiseido’s curler; it works really well. I just got it recently, because up til now, I’d always tell myself there couldn’t really be a difference worth $15 between the drugstore curlers and that one… but I was wrong. Eh, it’s not the first time that’s happened!

Amy-
Here’s how I get my lashes to curl and STAY curled…
I blast my eyelash curler with hot air from my hair dryer, touch it to make sure it won’t burn my eye, and curl. You could also use a heated eye lash curler.
Then I use Lancome Flex WP (waterproof) and I’ve found that’s the only mascara that keep my lashes curled. The regular Flexstencils doesn’t, but the waterproof does.

Wow it came out great. I am a makeup artist and I apply false eyelashes all the time. The individual eyelashes are my fave because you can control the look you are going for. Dont throw out those ardell ones because you can always cut them and apply them to the edge of our eyes to give you a doe eyed affect. Really pretty for a night out.

And to give your lashes a curl that will stay put heated eyelash curlers are a godsend!!

You should definitely use fake eyelashes! It makes a huge difference in pictures. In fact, all brides AND their bridesmaids should use fake eyelashes!

I think you look so pretty without the false lashes! You really don’t need them. Really!

I disagree with the posters above who say that *all* brides and bridesmaids should use fake lashes. I didn’t use any for my wedding… and I think I looked great!

Sure, fake lashes provide that extra “oomph.” But they’re not subtle, and I just couldn’t get used to the feeling.. or the look. False lashes would have made me look more glamorous in my photos… to a stranger. But I personally would have looked at those photos and thought “that’s not really me.” I think my husband would have felt the same way.

You look beautiful either way to me. But I’m a stranger. What’s important is how comfortable YOU and your fiance (and other loved ones) would feel with the look of your dramatic new lashes!

i get the ardell lashes in 110. they are the most natural lashes ive used. a good tip i received from my ma was to roll & unroll the eyelashes (the edge that you stick the glue on) around the handle of a make brush before you stick them on so that they are curvier & easier to apply to the lashline! =)

hope that helps =)
ps the japonesque lashes look beautiful on you, very natural xxx

To Hannah and anyone else in the Bay looking for Japonesque lashes: I picked up mine at the Beauty Source in San Ramon (same plaza as Whole Foods and Target). Miss Poppy, I emailed you regarding this too :)

Dont feel bad on missing out on lash extensions. They pull ot you own rela lashes! First you own lash will grown out so they get to be long and silly looking so when you start taking them off whith the poper solution you own lash still may come off. I wouldnt advise anyopne to get them without know what they may be in for.

I find that people can’t actually tell when you are wearing them ( in person). For example, the first time I tried some on, my mother remarked, ‘oh you’ve done your make-up nicely today.’ I still live at home and see my mother day in day out.
However people can tell when you aren’t wearing them, there is a dramatic difference when you take them off.
For the people telling you not to wear them, they are probably just reacting the word ‘fake’ and what it implies.
Humans are vain. I haven’t meant anyone in my life who did not care for looks at all. But whether you stop at combing your hair or wearing false eyelashes, you are still grooming - and if you are going to groom you might as well do it properly - especially on one of the most important days of your life.
Congratulations by the way!

If you want to look great for your wedding day, try using Everlash semi-permanent Lashes.

You can get them by visiting http://www.universalbeautyproducts.net . I think you need to be an esthetician though.

Eyelash extensions are gorgeous on everybody. it is customized for each client. The eyelash extensions shouldnt pull off your natural lashes. the lashes have a natural shedding process and the extension can be attached when it sheds naturally. I do offer eyelash extensions they are perfect for anyone especially Brides the lashes are water-proof, tear-proof and sweat-proof. They come in a variety of lengths, widths and colors. When applying the eyelash extensions the natural lash needs to be considered so the extensions applied aren’t too heavy and way down the natural lashes… I offer mobile spa appointments and work in a Medical Spa in Seattle’s lower Queen Anne neighborhood Seattle Medical Aesthetics. If anyone has any questions re: the lashes you can email me:)

Kindest regards,
Lianna Aesthetician

Hi there :)

Your lashes and generally your eyes look wonderful!! :) I wish I could make my eyes to look like yours. Unfortunately, I’ve had some fake lashes on myself a couple of times but I always had an impression that it makes my eyes smaller :( I don’t know why… - it’s a paradox, isn’t it?? Maybe I used the wrong shape for my eyes or they were too long - don’t know! I’ll try to talk with some professional about it cause I’d like to have bigger and dolly-like eyes, e.g. like LiLo who wears them just all time and her eyes are just gorgeous!!

Hugs Gals,
xx
