Open Question: Boxed Invitations

January 5th, 2007 @ 1:10 pm by Open Question

What is the correct way to send out boxed invitations? Do you put them in a large white envelope, wrap in brown packing paper and address or send them out via courier? I know they’ll be beautiful once opened, but how can they look nice when being mailed too?

Thanks!
Nicole

Hi Nicole,

A boxed invitation can mail all on it’s own, without an outer envelope or extra packaging. As long as the box is sturdy, it’s properly sealed, properly labelled, and it meets the size requirements of the Postal Service, you can drop it right in the big blue mailbox around the corner.

I like to seal my boxed invites with a long label that’s at least 2″ wide. It needs to wrap all the way around the box to seal it securely, and you can use the front of the label as a spot to address your invites. You can address the label as you would any invitation, there’s no need for bar codes or special stickers.

To qualify for the First Class mail rate, packages can be no smaller than 3″ x 5″ and can weigh no more than 13 oz. To calculate the rate for mailing your boxes, log on to http://postcalc.usps.gov/. Prices vary from around $1.30 to around $2.50. The rate depends on weight, and not distance. I would recommend using Airmail or another service when mailing to international guests. The requirements can vary according to country, so make sure to send those off from the Post Office.

You can see an image of this technique in action here. I hope that helps!

For my best friend’s wedding, I’m using these boxes in 7 x 7 (approx) and labeling as Mackenzie does.

hmm, are you putting the invite in those boxes or another box inside of the 7 x 7 box?

I was thinking about papermart’s colored jewelry boxes with the invite glued into the botom portion of a 8.5 x 5.5 size

I also went back and forth with different ideas and went with a simple white “pizza” box (I believe it was the same one 7×7 and found at papermart.com) - filled it with shredded craft paper placed the invite in, had a pretty scalloped edged label addressed to each guest (in caligraphy) and sealed the box on 3 sides with clear packing tape.

I considered wrapping them in brown paper but the thought of doing this for the 100+ invites was just too much.

End result was still lovely and once guests open the box they will be so excited about your invite that they probably forgot about the box ;)

Good luck!

i’m using a long label (cut from 8.5×11 label paper) to address and seal at the same time. kind of like mackenzie did. i wanted to use the paper mart jewelry boxes, but i wasn’t sure if they were mailable on their own and didn’t want to take the risk.

thanks for the pics vallartatiffany - i am going to have to show my friend those! how much postage did you need?

For DIY brides, where can we buy boxes like Macknezie’s?
