The Skinny Black Tie

January 6th, 2007 @ 2:56 pm by Mrs. Apple

The first time I ever noticed the “Skinny Black Tie” was in Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding photos. Mr. Brad Pitt - one of the sexiest men in the world - was wearing one, but I still really loved the clean line and look of his signature tie and black suit.

Mr. Apple and I haven’t decided yet what his tuxedo/suit will look like, but I do like the look of this style. I’m not a huge fan of cumberbunds or vests, and maybe since our wedding will be a little more casual, Mr. Apple doesn’t need to wear them. The black jacket paired with the black skinny tie and crisp white shirt really looks great in black and white photos, and possibly in colored photos too.

Here is Brad’s signature “Skinny Black Tie”.

“Agent Smith” from The Matrix - you got the right look. :)

What do you think? Do you think its not formal enough (no vest, cumberbund, etc.) for a wedding? What do you think about colored ties - too matchy matchy?

i think the skinny black tie can be styled to be either “formal” or a bit more “casual” - depends on the suit/occasion, etc - you guys want it, then go for it!! :)

I love it too! That’s what I and my fiance want. We actually tried on a black jacket at Target and it looked decent- we picked the slightly smaller size than is normal, and I think it looks a little edgier. And it’s a good option if we want all our guys (who aren’t rollin’ in dough) to match. Same price as a tux and you keep it. But my man has designer taste, so we’ll see…

I got an Oscar De La Renta suit at Belk for $100 jacket and $60 pants… it was a great deal. Much cheaper than a tux, and just as sharp!

As for the tie, I like it too. We’re having a colored tie though.

No vests, no cummerbunds here either. The skinny black tie looks great. We were admittedly matchy matchy with our ties (groomsmen wore orange, the hubs wore pink).

My wedding was very formal black tie. My husband (and our dads, and all the groomsmen) wore straight ties, no vests, no cummerbunds. Some wore suspenders. If you look at the latest tuxedo catalogs, there are a lot of straight ties w/o vests, etc being shown.
Go for it!
