Beehive

January 8th, 2007 @ 12:30 pm by Beehive

In today’s hive:

  • Maricris wants to konw for those of you who have gone to all-inclusive resorts, where would you recommend? Her honeymoon is in July and they’re comtemplating the Carribean or Mexico.
  • Jenny GoLightly is wondering if it’s ok to have a rehearsal lunch because her venue is only available in the morning the day before her wedding day. They’ll rehearse in the morning, have a lunch afterwards, and relax in the evening. Or do you have any other suggestions?
  • LK wants to know when there is a cake with different flavors, how is it distributed? Does every guest get smaller slices of each flavor? Or is it luck of the draw when the waiters pass them around?
  • SueW wants to know if this orchid is real or fake and where she might purchase it.
  • lori wants to know which headpiece goes with this dress?
  • pam had a lot of out of town guests and spread the word that gifts were not necessary. She’s wondering if she should still send a thank you not to thank them for coming because she doesn’t want it to be taken as “I’m sending this to remind you that you didn’t send a gift.” Is she overthinking?

Jenny, the following is only my opinion (duly subjective) so please take it with a grain of salt.

i think a rehearsal luncheon sounds lovely in theory. but the only thing i would look out for is how long the day may get, if you have the rehearsal lunch the day of your wedding. there are so many unexpected things that come up on your wedding day and the time just seems to evaporate. you may not want such a formal commitment when you have so much else to worry about.

what about a pre-rehearsal dinner? and even having an off-site rehearsal the night before. then the day of you could have a run through of what you’d already rehearsed but it would take up less of your valuable hair/makeup/calming breathing time.

Question: When there is a cake with different flavors, how is it distributed? does every guest get smaller slices of each flavor? or is it luck of the draw and you just get which ever flavor the waiter is passing around?

Mrs. Daisy,
Thanks for the advice. However, the luncheon would be on the day before our wedding. We’re getting married on a Sunday (May 27) so we would have the rehearsal and lunch on Saturday.
I’ve looked around and found some other resources (including Martha Stewart!) that say, regardless of the name “Rehearsal Dinner”, it can be a luncheon or brunch or anything else you want it to be!
Thanks again for the advice!

One question…I found a picture of this orchid with what seems to be an attached ribbon/elastic. Has anyone seen this anywhere? I’m wondering if it a real flower or a fake one that I can purchase somewhere.

for cakes with different flavors, most of the time it has been the luck of the draw.
i imagine that a venue would charge more to make more cuts into a cake! :)

LK -

I’m with HM in that with different cake flavors it’s luck of the draw. We had that at our 2nd reception, where we had 3 different flavors. Some folks were disappointed not to get a certain one, but most didn’t seem to mind whichever flavor they got. There are those who don’t even eat much cake, so if you give everyone some of each, there might be a lot of waste (not to mention a significantly larger cake bill). I made sure to ask the catering manager to make sure the bride/groom got a little of each. However in hindsight, there is less trouble with just one kind of cake…unless you go with a different groom’s cake.

What kind of headpiece would go with this dress?

For an AI honeymooon…we went to the El Dorado Royale in Mexico for our first anniversary. It was incredible. That’s my recommendation!

LK…
We had strawberry shortcake and chocolate. I believe it’s luck of the draw unless you provide enough for everyone to get both slices.

SueW- that picture of orchid looks fake to me. I would check ebay to see if you can buy it in bulks.

jenny - we had a rehearsal luncheon and it was fine. we had our rehearsal at 11am.. took about 40 mins, then went to dim sum afterwards.

question: i need advice regarding thank you note ettiquette. we had a lot of out-of-town guests. before our wedding, we really tried to spread the word to everyone (but especially those travelling) that we do not need anything.. a gift is not necessary and that plane tickets and hotel rooms for themselves were more than enough.

i’m wondering if i still send these guests a thank you note? i want to send one and thank them for coming all the way and to say that it was great to see them, etc. but i dont want it taken in the wrong way. as in “i’m sending this to remind you that you didnt send a gift” kind of thing. am i overthinking this?

I think thanking out of town guests can only be taken as thoughtful and gracious–gift or no gift. It can take a lot of money to attend a wedding and if you made it clear you weren’t expecting gifts. . .well, I think your friends will appreciate your sentiment.

Sue: i dont neccessarily think that orchid is fake…but i think the coloring in the photo is enhanced. Go with a green-ish orchid and you will probably have a similar effect.

Pam-
Glad to hear the luncheon worked for you…and to hear about El Dorado Royale. We booked 10 nights there for our honeymoon! So excited! We LOVE Riviera Maya!

Maricris-
Other amazing Mexico places are El Dorado Royale, Royal Hideaway, Secrets Capri and Aventura Spa Palace. All are adult-only and cater especially to couples!

NEW QUESTION/
So, what do you think of honeymoon registries? Did you/would you use one, or do you think it’s a little cheeky to be asking your guests to pay for your honeymoon?

Dani - I think it’s a great idea for people who might already have their household set up or for whatever reason don’t want traditional gifts. However, personally, I would prefer china/appliances or money that I would use for the same purpose, as wedding gifts. In my opinion it’s something that you never justify splurging on as you would on honeymoon (I think it would be hard to convince any man to spend the savings on 12 sets of fine china that we’ll use once a year). Also, if you already have some of the appliances or dinner/stemware, you can always upgrade.

This is just my opinion and if I was giving a gift, I would opt for traditional gift or money over honeymoon.

A friend of mine has asked me for ideas for her bridal shower. It should be day time event ( brunch/lunch/tea) in NYC ( Manhattan only) for about 20 people. She didn’t have budget in mind since she didn’t really have any benchmark but should not be too expensive.

The only place I could think about was Alice’s Teacup II on UES.

Any Ideas ? What kind of budget should she be looking at ?

dani - we registered with honeymoonwishes.com
only one person purchased from it. when received the check, it didn’t say who it was from. had our guest not have told us, we would have never known who to thank.

Maricris: I just shot a wedding in los cabos, mexico and stayed at royal solaris… it was all inclusive… flight, stay, food and alcohol!!!

not only is it a beautiful resort… but there are tons of things to do… from horseback riding, atv riding, parasailing, etc. cabo san lucas is about 20 mins aways… there are tons of bars for the night life…

oh… if you do plan on going, go to the restaurant in the resort. you have to make a reservation but it’s so worth it… the hubbs and i ordered 3 appetizers… 2 main dishes and 3 desserts… it’s so weird cuz it’s all inclusive :)

oh… there are 3 bars located thoughout the resort, lobby, beach and pool :)

Jenny GoLightly: it’s TOTALLY okay to have a rehearsal lunch.

LK: i have been to weddings with different flavors and it’s usually the luck of the draw… i think putting smaller slices on each plate will get messy and take a lot of time…

pam: sent thank you cards thanking them for sharing your day with them…
