Reader Buzz: Taking Risks

January 8th, 2007 @ 3:00 pm by Reader Buzz

Mrs. Bee here.

PlanetGordon posted a video of himself bungee jumping on his recent New Zealand honeymoon. That got me to thinking whether or not any weddingbee readers would be participating in extreme sports on their honeymoons. I was chatting the reader buzz idea over with Mr. Bee this morning, and he brought up the amazing story of the man who jumped on the subway tracks. (A convulsing man fell in between subway tracks in New York last week, and an onlooker jumped on top of him, pressing him down until five subway cars rolled overhead. The most amazing part of the story was that the citizen’s two young daughters stood on the platform watching the whole time. The two men walked away unscathed, but it was truly a story of modern day heroism.)

Mr. Bee was extremely moved by the story and wondered what he would have done had he been in the same situation. He said that he would have jumped too had he been single, but now that he’s married, he probably wouldn’t. He finds himself taking less risks because he has to think of someone other than himself now. I thought this was really interesting because since getting engaged, I’ve definitely become less of a risk taker myself.

I have to admit that I’ve always been somewhat of a risk-taker - I drove fast, partied hard, and loved extreme sports like bungee jumping, skydiving, and scuba diving. But I’d be be much more reluctant to engage in these activities now that I’m married. I’ll probably become even more reluctant once we start a family. I’ve also started taking better care of myself in general, because I do take my life more seriously now that Mr. Bee depends on me.

Do you find yourself taking less risks now that you’re engaged or married? And are you planning on participating in any extreme sports together on your honeymoon?

Funny, my BM actually mentioned that I drive in the city with “more caution” now that the wedding is two months away :D

I heard that story and quite honestly, I was more concerned on how he took that huge of a risk in front of his children. What if he couldn’t save him, and died as well, and his children would have to witness their father’s death? I agree… the older I get with more responsibilities and now with another person in my life, I see myself being more cautious.

My FI plans on going scuba diving while I snorkel around the boat- because I can’t scuba dive because of my ear.

Hmm… we have never really been risk takers, but I think the main reason why we don’t indulge in activities like sky diving, bungee jumping etc. is mainly because they can be costly, not because we are opposed to the idea. I think the only time this issue really came up was when Jess was considering getting a motorcycle license. I told him I was fine with it, but didn’t know how I’d feel about him riding a bike regularly if/when we have a family.

Even though we’re going to Costa Rica for our honeymoon, I probably won’t be doing much danger-wise. That may be because I am a huge chicken. Or it may be because I don’t want to die. I am afraid of heights, though! Mr. Kiwi isn’t THAT risky, either, but he did travel more before we got together. He stays home a lot more, now.

There’s also the fact that marriage generally comes with older age….people tend to take more risks when they’re younger than when they are older.

Some evolutionary biologists believe that risk-taking (for males especially) is a way to show off to women to try to attract them, so doing less of it when you’re married would make sense.

i love extreme sports. but i can totally see my passion for it declining if i were married or even engaged. that’s why i plan on doing as much as i can before that happens! luckily, my bf loves extreme sports as much as i do. :)

FI is more of a risk taker than I am physically but I tend to be more careless - cross against the light, don’t wear seatbelts in cabs, etc. That being said, we’re both becoming more cautious but due to age rather than commitment.
