“Serious Metals”

January 9th, 2007 @ 8:29 am by Mrs. Bluebell

When Mr. Bluebell and I went to pick up my engraved wedding band, we decided to take a look at wedding bands for him too!

Previously, we had been thinking of getting him a titanium band because a) my band has diamonds so they won’t look matchy anyway, b) he doesn’t wear any jewelry now and gets really agitated with “things” on his fingers, so we thought the lighter metal might irritate him less, and c) most of the bands we liked for him just happened to be titanium. (Oh, and d) they’re way way cheaper than platinum!)

Our first choice pre-trying-on was this one from e-weddingbands.com

tistepd

Titanium & a mere $95 on sale now!

But then…we saw a gorgeous platinum domed step-edge ring at Michael C Fina that had a satin finish on the main part of the ring, but the edgey bits were shiny (sort of like this if the main part had a satin finish)

platsde

[also from e-weddingbands.com]

The Michael C Fina platinum ring looked so perfect on his hand, and was just a bit more “classic” than the first titanium ring we had loved. Suddenly I started thinking the titanium band might seem “trendy” years from now and look dated. I voiced this concern to our lovely salesgirl Jackie (seriously - love her!) and she had a different angle on the issue. She was also engaged currently so she told us about her and her fiance’s search to find a ring for him. They had also loved some of the titanium bands, but in the end went with platinum because platinum is a precious metal, which seems more serious and permanent, whereas titanium is industrial and relatively inexpensive and more for “fashion” jewelry (despite being physically tougher than platinum). Sure it may just have been a sales pitch for the more expensive ring, but I really believe that she felt that way when it came to choosing the ring that would go on her husband’s finger for life.

The thing is - I can’t quite tell if I feel that way or not! It had never occurred to me to care whether it was a “serious” metal as long as it looked nice and held up over time. But if he’s only wearing one ring for life, the added cost divided by the number of days he’ll wear it is pretty negligible - so why not get “top quality”?

What do you think about metal type - does it matter to you if your (or your husband’s) ring is a “precious” metal? Do you have other reasons for why you are choosing which metal your rings are made of?

I really didn’t care either way - since he’s the one that has to wear it. I think he actually liked the titanium because it’s more “industrial”! Since he’s a mechanic, he’s into that sort of thing I guess. Lol.

Miss. Orange

Mr. Orange never wears any jewelry so when it came time to pick out a wedding band for him, his priority was comfortable and reasonable. So, we went with white gold to match (?) my platinum. But, no deep thoughts. Also cheaper to replace in case he loses it :D

I think my FI is going to get titanium, but it’s just more his style. I’m with Jen. He’s the one that has to wear it, so it should be something that he likes.

My brother just got married in December and his wife got platinum and he got titanium.
She’s pretty disappointed that after just 2 weeks her ring has all little dings in it.
My brother’s band is holding up really well.

fi wants platinum to match my rings. knowing him, he will use his ring as a reminder to take my rings in for cleanings.

Maybe it’s an old wives tale, but two of my now-married friends have told me that since titanium is so strong, it can’t be cut off if something happens to the man’s hand (like if he breaks it and it swells up)–they would have to cut off the finger before they could get the ring off. Typing that, it sounds kind of outragous, but they both swear it’s true. Anyone else heard of this? FI wants a black titanium band, but the thought of having his finger cut off if he breaks his wrist or hand in a snowboarding accident is making him seriously reconsider!

I really don’t care….either way it’s a ring. Just like I don’t care if the stones in my ring are real or not.

Hehe, maybe I should have clarified more - I definitely don’t reeeally care, I think I’m just trying to convince myself that it’s worth more money for the ring I like better (which happens to be platinum). He definitely prefers the look of the platinum too, but doesn’t care that much so he’s kind of leaning towards just saving the money.

And CBeth - I had heard that too! But apparently it’s not true - check out this link:

Titanium is so much lighter - if your fiance isn’t used to wearing jewelry, he might like titanium better. It hardly feels like you’re wearing anything.

Platinum is the trendy material, if you ask me.

Thanks for that article Miss Bluebell!

My FI is probably going to go with titanium, because of the comfort (lightweight) issue. Additionally, since he NEVER wears rings or jewelry, we think he might lose a few in his “getting-used-to” stage, so we’re happy that they’re not too expensive!

Mr Apple was just looking at wedding bands for himself the other night and he’s leaning more towards the titanium too. Seems to be the consensus on weddingbee and pricescope.

Miss Kiwi

Mr. Kiwi wants titanium because he’s a coach and is constantly working with his hands all day- white gold is softer (my ring) so he can’t match mine, and he just doesn’t like platinum (it’s way to shiny, he says- lame-o) so titanium it is. Also, it’s really his first piece of jewelry, so he’s liking the light feel of it. :)

CBeth, hospitals do have tools to cut off titanium. But it is harder to do.

I’m getting my FI something cheap because he’s already told me he’s probably not going to wear it since he finds rings uncomfortable. My dad never wore his, and neither do most of my male relatives on either side.

So you may want to get an ironclad guarentee that your fi is actually going to wear it before you do the cost analysis.

Interestingly, most of my recently married male friends do wear theirs though. Is it generational do you think?

My husband has a titanium ring. We like the symbolism of the metal…It’s so very permanent and sturdy! Too, it’s very practical for a man who works with his hands. Whereas gold and even platinum can get pretty scratched up, my husband’s brushed titanium ring still looks like new.

My fi doesn’t wear any jewelry and at first he said he prob wouldn’t wear the ring anyhow. My e ring is white gold and so are my wedding bands. We ended up getting him a white gold band. It was comfortable and now he wants to wear it. Platinum dents really easily but is more white than white gold. You can get it polished but if it has a matte finish it will be shiny afterwards and vice versa. It just depends on what he likes. If you like the platinum band get it, you only get married once. Its something worth splurging for. I have heard about titanium bands and the thought that it has to get sawed off is a little scary. There are rings that have a comfort fit so that might be an option too.

You should try a palladium ring. It is similar metal like platinum, but a lot cheaper and lighter. It is equivalent in weight to a titanium ring, but isn’t as rustic looking. I research metal stocks at work and my boss and I cam across some palladium companies only to discover that that palladium is a by product of platinum and is 100% pure. It is not very popular here, but huge in China. My boss got married earlier this year and actually has a palladium ring that he loves. I would definitely recommend you check it out -

My fiance confessed that he doesn’t really want to wear a wedding ring at all, but I want him to, so he will. I said, “would you be happy if *I* didn’t wear a band?” Answer: no. So he’s wearing one. But we haven’t shopped yet. I’ll be wearing something in plain platinum. Platinum to match my engagment ring, plain because my fiance is Jewish and he grew up with the idea that wedding bands should not have stones (Yes, I know not all Jews interpret it the same way.) I had thought it might be pretty to have a few stones in my ring, but I’m OK with it being plain, as my engagement ring is rather decorative. For him, since he doesn’t even want a band all that much, it seems silly to spend the enormous amount of money it would cost to get him a platinum band. (Of course, if that’s what he really wants, that’s what we’ll get.) He’s a big man, with big hands, so he’ll need a wide ring to look good, and his size is about a 12, so it’s going to be a big, heavy ring. I do, however, prefer the idea of getting a precious metal rather than tungsten or titanium. It’s his wedding ring, you know? It should be precious. So it will probably be yellow gold, yellow so it won’t need re-dipping in future. Also I’ve heard the “sawed off” stories and they’re a little scary.

I just wanted to add that my now husband said all the things above (he’s not used to jewelry on his hands, he won’t wear it, he works with his hands and needs something durable). After a trip to the store, he ended up with platinum because he wanted something classic and fitting for a wedding band…in his mind, it wasn’t just another ring.

He wears it all the time (more than I wear mine) and is actually bothered when he can’t! You never know…

CBeth is right. I was just in a jeweler’s store last week, and the sales lady confirmed that story about titanium. if anything happens to his hand, then that ring will NOT come off. scary, huh? that quickly made my decision for me, since the other half is going to be a police officer (who knows what could happen). he’s also pretty…active ALL of them time and gets into everything. (sometimes, I think I”m dating a 200 lb 6 year old :)).

anyway, that’s certainly something to think about! good luck!

oh, I forgot! the sales lady suggested tungsten. it’s kinda heavy, but it’s durable and CAN be cut off in an emergency.

Nothing unusual about buying 2 different metals for his ring and hers. Why spend a lot if he cannot wear his ring due to job restrictions or other reasons. Some men like jewelry while others don’t really care.
