A Chinese Necklace

January 10th, 2007 @ 11:27 am by Mrs. Poppy

As many of you know, I’m Korean with a dash of Japanese in me. Mr Poppy is Chinese-Hong Kongese? :D My in-laws are here from HK and when they came, they brought many gifts for their “daughter”… *ahem* that would be me. ;)

All the gifts were wonderful and I loved them all. But my favourite was the jade necklace that Mr Poppy’s mother gave me. This is not just any jade necklace - this jade was passed down by her mother and her mother’s mother. I was so unbelievably honoured and I felt so special! She even had the yellow gold chain and the part that holds the jade replaced with white gold. Then she had the jade special made with diamonds on it because she wanted it so that “a young girl could easily wear it nowadays.”

I put it on and the whole family was smiling ear to ear. I felt truly loved, I felt like a daughter… I am their daughter. And when we have children - I too will pass down this jade to my little girl. The thought of this jade being passed down generation to generation makes me very proud. Especially since I am told that as you wear the jade more, the darker it gets. (It’s already beautiful but imagine it 5 girls down the road!)

Do you have something from your in-laws or parents that have been passed down from older generations? And if so, will you keep passing it down?

Even though they tell me I don’t have to wear it everyday…. I do. Not because I have to but because I love them.

The center stone in my e-ring belonged to FI’s grandmother and we have some tiny diamonds from his grandmother’s ring and one of his mom’s old rings, which someday we’ll have all made into a pendant. I will definitely keep all the stones to pass down.

the center stone of my e-ring belonged to my future mother in law. i definitely plan on passing it down later.

fmil also wears a necklace (possibly opal?) that used to belong to her GREAT grandmother. it will be passed on to fmil’s eldest daughter.

the whole idea is just crazy to me that we’re wearing jewelry that woman in our family years and years ago that we know very little about once wore and admired!

What a sweet story! It’s really great that they’re welcoming you into the family and including you in their traditions :-)

MIss Poppy, I was given the chance to take FMIL’s center stone as well, but because we were independent (read: stubborn) young people we said “No, thank you.” Also, it was the last thing Mr. Kiwi’s dad had given her before he passed on, so there was no way I could take that! Although the stone will probably be ours when she passes (Not for a LONG LONG TIME I hope), we’re probably going to put it away for our future children.

The necklace sounded so beautiful in your post— I was sad to not see a picture. If you have time you should post it, it sounds like a great treasure.

When my MIL saw me shopping for a jade bracelet, she gave me one from her own collection. I was so touched. The bracelet also had some history to it handed down from gernerations. Since I have two sons, I guess I will give to to one of my daughter in law like my Mother in law did.

AM

It isn’t jewelry, but I’ll be wearing an antique, chapel length, lace veil that was worn by my great grandmother, grandmother and all of her sisters, and my mom and all of her sisters. I am the first girl in my generation (out of all my cousins) and have the honor of being the first in my generation to wear it:)

Miss Plumeria

Hi Miss Poppy! I am pretty much opposite… I’m marrying a Korean guy and I’m Chinese. :) So I’m learning quite abit about Korean culture now.

It’s funny I guess, but my future mother-in-law passes down a lot of her clothes to me — we’re about the same size and both have a liking for Ann Taylor. She has four sons, so we love to go shopping together and go to all the “girl” stores while Mr. Plumeria and his brothers (when they’re around; they’re spread out over the U.S.) look at video games. :P

@hunni bunni:
I was hoping to find this same necklace, have you been lucky enough to find it or what it’s called yet? If so, please let me know. My husband may be away from home for months soon and I am looking for something prettier then the old Mizpah necklace.
