Per BoooOcotober’s comment, the E-Save-the-Date strategy seemed to work well for my internet-savvy friends, many of whom are in front of computers most of the day. After the deluge of emails within the first 24-48 hours, during which I received 17 replies out of the 30 emails I sent, there were a few stragglers here and there that trickled in. I figured if they didn’t respond within a few days, I most likely would not be getting one. I am excited to say that I now have 25 of the 30 addresses. Looks like I will be making a handful of phone calls, but that’s much better than making 30.
Another note is that for our relatives, parents’ friends, and any other less-internet-enslaved guests, we have been passing the date along by word of mouth and phone calls.
We’ll have to do this all over again once Mr. Lime gets his e-mail list together.
In conclusion, do it if you know your guests check email frequently. Don’t bother for guests that don’t; the phone is more effective in those cases. I did get a lot of nice comments from recipients on the little layout I spent a couple nights on (although most of that time was spent on the overall print identity since it will carry over into my invites and other wedding ‘print collateral’), but I got even more comments on the awesome engagement photo [credit: M. Lastly, it got me back to emailing with some people I’ve recently lost [frequent] contact with, which was an added bonus.
