My Something Old, A Gift

January 10th, 2007 @ 12:27 pm by Mrs. Kiwi

Most people use a family heirloom as their “something old.” Since I don’t really have anything like that, I’m using something else that’s very special to me - a necklace from Mr. Kiwi.

Now, this isn’t your average necklace, ya know. This was my first ever Christmas gift from Mr. Kiwi. By the time we get married, the necklace will officially be ten years old. Given to me when we first dated, it was the first jewelry I ever received from a boyfriend. Actually, now that I think about it, it is still my only jewelry item from any boyfriend ever. Cheap bastards. :) Anyway, so he gave this to me, and even after we broke up, I wore it every day. I finally stopped wearing it two years ago when baby Woofman reached up with his paw and snagged it, which broke it. I kinda fixed it, but I’m a little hesistant to wear it out.

As you can see, it’s an amber heart with a leaf shaped attachment that enables me to wear it on a necklace. The reason it’s amber, is because that’s my name. It’s an easy way to get me something I like - if it’s amber, I’ll wear it. :) Anyway, I also think the leaf is fitting, since our wedding will be festooned with leaves. So, my plan is to thread it on a ribbon and wrap my bouquet with it, or wear it around my ankle. Without further ado, the necklace.

Since Mr. Kiwi was tired of seeing me leave my ring around when I wash dishes, he got me a jewelry box. :) Inside he has a picture of us, and the outside engraved with “Forever Amber.” This is where I keep my most treasured items, like the necklace, my Winchester House coin (I am that lame) and my e-ring when it’s resting. What can I say? I have nothing of value-other than Mr. Kiwi, Woofie, my ring and my necklace! Here’s a few pictures of that gift…

I’m looking forward to using the necklace on our day, and my jewelry box forever!

ooh, that is pretty. did you ever think about taking the chain in to see if it can be repaired or replaced?

don’t worry, i’ve been obsessed with the winchester house since i was in the elementary school [they had a blurb about it in our social studies books]. i’ve been 4 times and i’m still finding excuses to go!

Aww, there’s really pretty and special. I love the color of it.

My mom just informed me yesterday that I will be getting one of my grandmothers wedding bands. It’s gold and big and can’t really wear it on my day, but hoping to incorporate somehow like you are!

Yay! Those amber necklaces are Polish :).

(My dad was born in PL, and every time I go there I pick up amber pendants for my girlfriends).

I have a heart pendant he gave me in the 8th grade that I intend to stitch onto my garter (the one to keep, not the one to throw) as the “charm.”

I think it’s a wonderful idea to wear that as your something old. My fiance gave me earrings for our first Christmas and I was thinking of wearing them for the wedding too.

I like the idea of wrapping it around your bouquet. You could easily do that with some ribbon and pins.
