Seashell Cake. Cheesy or Cute?

January 10th, 2007 @ 8:28 am by Mrs. Hibiscus

Here is a sample of my ever-so-large picture collection of seashell cakes. I’m considering having my wedding cake adorned with sugar or chocolate shells instead of the usual floral decor. Yes, I’m getting married on the beach. Also, my reception is aboard a yacht. Now, I think a good rule-of-thumb with a beach wedding is to not overdo the beach theme. Too many starfish, seashells and palm trees start looking like a luau and not a wedding reception. That being said, what I need is an honest opinion of whether or not you think my seashell cake idea is cheesy or not. Also…

Which cake do you like the best (or hate the least)?

A friend of mine just got married and had a seashell cake that was really nice, and very subtle. Instead of the large seashells scattered on the cake, the whole thing was covered with bands of white chocolate seashells, all of which were small (maybe 1-2 inches) and the bands were alternating between 3 different seashell shapes. She and her husband are both very into sailing and the wedding was near the shore, and it was really the only element that was sea related and it was very tasteful. Since the seashells were flush with the cake and the same color, it was very subtle- you almost had to look twice to see it, and I thought it looked (and tasted!) divine.

I love the seashell wedding cakes! I’m actually having one! It’s called Coral Elegance - http://www.tastefulcreationscakes.com/gallery3.html

i like 7 the best b/c it’s the best proportion of seashells and cake. the others felt overwhelmed by seashells.

Each one is better than the next- I think it depends on your colors- the neutral ones are more understated and elegant. However, I love #7 because it is so vibrant, but it may not match some decors. So I think they are awesome, as long as they kinda go with everything else. I don’t think it will be too beachy :) .

Hey Miss Hibiscus-
Go with your theme, I love it!
My favorite cake was #8 but I am not sure of your color scheme. Some of them were a bit over done (specifically 9 and 4) but some embellishment with seashells is super cute. My theme was snowflakes and I gathered a whole portfolio of pictures and stuff but when I talked to a baker I really liked she was a great help and my cake was lovely.
If you do some tastings and at least find a bakery that you like, hopefully they can help you develop a design you will really love!

I like the ones that the shells don’t look real on. The one with the two giant starfish on (#4) is kinda gross. Have you smelled dried starfish before? I wouldn’t want them on top of something I was going to eat.

I like the blue background cake, maybe a cake in your wedding color with either white or chocolate shells on it would be pretty.

OK, different opinion. Not crazy about putting real seashells on the cake. A friend ordered shells to decorate placecards and they are stinking up her apartment like low tide. The shell is the animal’s skeleton. Kind of like putting animal bones on a cake (picture it covered in chicken bones…). I’d go for shell decorations of sugar/frosting, or maybe piping that looks like coral branches. Real shells are OK on the table for decoration. Not sure if there are vegetarian/kosher considerations (like not using real bone china)? As a guest, would I eat the cake? Sure, after scraping off the frosting. : ) No offense, but wanted to provide another perspective.

I like the idea and many of the cakes. Please, please, please don’t do the bride and groom starfish! That’s cheesy!!

I have to agree with Iris–the idea of real shells on a cake is somewhat off-putting, but I like the concept of shell *shapes* to reflect your theme. The white chocolate “shells” that BA mentions sound very nice–something more subtle that hints at your theme, rather than hitting the guests over the head with it, is more elegant overall. If you still wanted to incorporate shells into the cake display in a more overt way, you could create a cake plate with shells on the sides, or do something as simple as a shell design on the dessert napkins :-) Just my 2c though :-D

They are all gross! Sorry, you know me, I have difficulty with wedding cake.

Recently, there was a knotty bio posted on here (Friday?) that had quite a beautiful ocean themed cake and I am a harsh critic.

Rachel — Your cake looks great. And all edible! The sugar “sand” touch is a cute detail. Love the chocolate shells.

Rachel-I like your cake! :) I definitely wouldn’t do real shells. That’s why I wrote I would use sugar or chocolate shells. :) Thanks for the feedback everyone

IMO the blue is a bit too much when it’s dark. (like #8). That’s just me though! I think it looks too fake ocean.

Just to throw out another idea here is our beachy wedding cake from our August 06 wedding in Seattle. Made by Creative Cake Designs.

Good luck! I totally agree that you can go overboard with a theme - keep it simple.

I had a seashell cake at my beach wedding. We had no other references to the beach theme but that. It was a pale blue and had a few very subtle pearlized, white chocolate shells here and there. We received tons of compliments on it! I think you will end up liking it. Some of the ones pictured are a little much though.

I am having a destination wedding and want to do a seashell cake. However, I need to bring the shells down with me.

Can someone please give me the name of a supplier that I can get edible seashells from? Much obliged! Dvrgrrl@yahoo.com
