About Mrs. Plumeria

Yeah, I know, cheesy title. But I do covet your opinions on this matter:

My wedding reception is being held in a hotel ballroom, as I mentioned in my last post. I had never planned to have chair covers for the reception, as I had thought the chairs, while not the prettiest, were decent at least. Somehow, I had thought they were your typical round-back banquet chairs with beige cushioning, and so was satisfied enough to just leave them be — since I have so many guests, it will cost me a small fortune to cover all of them. I figured with the neutral coloring, no one would notice chair covers anyway.

Upon visiting the site this past weekend, I discovered that the chairs are indeed round-back banquet style chairs… but they are RED. My wedding colors are pastel teal/aqua, cream, and gold. Suddenly, the little detail I previously felt was unimportant seems mighty attractive…

I’m a little torn — part of me is telling myself it’s not a big deal; just let it go. The other, artist/designer part of me can’t stand that the chairs will definitely clash with the rest of the decor (I realize this part of me may be why this whole issue is eating at me in the first place). So far, I’ve cautiously started to research, but I haven’t made any commitments yet, though I’ve found two vendors whose prices are low enough for me to realistically toy with the idea of hiring them. What do you think?

To give you an idea, here are some before/after pics of similar banquet spaces with and without chair covers below the cut. Mine is your typical hotel ballroom like these, but with red chairs. I am planning to keep the tables very pastel.

Teal and Red is one of the “it” color schemes of the moment. I think the burst of color will go undetected, plus you will still be chic.

I agree that the overall decor is important, but I think the reality is that most people will not even remember the color of your chairs as soon as they leave the reception! They’ll pay attention to the centerpieces, cake table, sweetheart table (i.e., things they can actually see when they are sitting down).

don’t pastel Teal and Red match? I like them together. But if it’s totally not what you want then you should go for it and get some covers.

I think the chair covers would defiantely be an upgrade in general. But I don’t think that the red will clash and I don’t think people will notice. I think more people will comment on the decor with the chair covers just because it seems more formal and prettier to look at. But, if you weren’t going to do the chair covers before, I don’t think the red chairs should be that much of a push to do it now.

I didn’t cover chairs at my reception b/c I didn’t think it was worth the money. But if I felt like they clashed or ruined the look I was going for, I definitely would have reconsidered.

the whole look is only noticed by the first people in the room, because they get to see the whole look. once people are sitting in chairs, the whole look doesn’t matter as much.

I worked my way w. the budget and put chair covers on all the chairs.

Maybe it’s the perfectionist in all of us, but I think we all want our reception sites to look a certain way, and if it doesn’t we’ll never be satisfied.

Do whatever you want, Miss Plumeria! That’s why it’s your wedding! :)

i totally knwo what u mean cause the church for the ceremony has these really ugly green chairs, and doesn’t look well with a baby blue wedding. but i think im going to just deal with it because it would cost too much for me to cover them all. and i dno’t think that many ppl would notice as much as i do. but i think that if it’ll be something thats always in the back of your mind then i think you should cover them. :-)

hm makes a good point: only the first people who walk into the room will notice the chairs.

I personally wouldn’t spend the money covering the chairs, but if it’s really going to bother you, you should do it. I wouldn’t want you (or any bride) to have regrets when looking back at your wedding.

I was torn about this issue for my venue. Here were two things that helped me make my decision not to cover the chairs.

1) I asked someone who had just attended a wedding there if the chairs in the dancing room were the same as the chairs in the dining room. She couldn’t remember what the chairs looked like in either room. Come to think of it, the only chairs I ever remember from a wedding reception were the chairs that were covered.

2) The pictures you’re looking at are of the room empty. People will be sitting in the chairs. You won’t see the chairs once people are sitting. Once people are up and dancing, you won’t be caring about the chairs then either.

I totally was like you…”anti-chair” covers..I couldn’t bring myself to spend all that money on chair covers…but then..when I saw my venue without them…I fell and went with the chaircovers..It made the wedding banquet look SOOOOO much nicer and more elegant..so that’s why I say go for it..!

my theme is blue and white and my venue comes with these dark marroon chairs. I really wanted chair covers…then my FI told me to think about it really hard for 10 min. After 10 min I decided that money can go to better causes. No one is really going to care about the colors of my chairs. Honestly, weddings don’t have to be too over the top…you don’t have to impress your friends and family. What’s more imp is for them to have a good time.

Don’t bother with the chair covers. For my sister’s wedding a few years ago I had a minor freak out when I realized the table linens weren’t floor length. Sis got married in Ireland and her I was two week’s before the wedding trying to arrange a linen rental in Ireland or arrange to take the linens with me.

Luckily I refocused and realized it wasn’t that big a deal. Come the day of the wedding we never even thought about it and I doubt it caused anyone more than a moment’s thought. Spend the money where you’ll notice it and/or remember it - not on chair covers.

i have never walked into a reception and thought, “for the love of bob the builder, she should have used chair covers.” seriously. i swear. from the sounds of the color and your theme, the red would be a nice accent and free to boot. total score.

to me, unless the chairs were completely totally backwater fugly [like they had run in traffic and gotten hit by EVERY big rig on 880], then would i consider chair covers. then again, stressing over the color of the chairs [that no one will notice] just because they are some other color than what my wedding colors are would be like me thinking about repainting the light peach in my church’s sanctuary because it may possibly clash with my wedding colors. ;-)

Thanks all for your opinions. :) I know it really comes down to what I want, but seeing what others think helps a lot!

I do know that pastel teal/aqua and red is a chic and very valid color combo — in fact, I think Miss Lime is using it and so far her stuff looks gorgeous, esp. with her venue — but those who know me will know that the very pastel blue, cream and gold are very “me;” adding red, even though it might be very pretty, would take away from that.

Maybe I should also have mentioned that the carpet is a sort of funky, garish print of royal blue and gold scrolly things. That already sort of bothered me a little, but adding in the red in addition takes it over the top. Eh. I think it’s really coming down to — if I can afford it easily enough, then I’ll probably go for it. :) But we’ll see!!

I agree with all the ladies as they say that you should go with anything that you want..

but if you’re asing what i would personally do..
i would get chair covers..but then again, i’m just a pro-chair cover person. ha! does that make sense? i know that the guests won’t really notice them too much, but i think that it brings a cohesiveness to the entire room.

if you’re going to go with the chair covers, just try to find a good deal for the covers and/or bow fabric~ :)

I hate to say it but that would drive me nuts if my wedding clashed that much!
I hope you can find nice chair covers at a gooood price!

i would cover it. but you might want to ask the hotel if they have other chair options first. they may have other chairs they can substitute? good luck!

Cover them. You’re spending so much money on the wedding already to make everything look just the way you want it, cover the chairs. As a designer myself, it would sort of just nag at me… and once you decide to cover them, you’ll be able to focus on other things. I originally planned my colors as pink and brown, but then when I took a closer look at the hall details which were all dark maroon and taupe-ish, I ditched the brown because I wanted it to look festive and soft, and the brown and maroon were just too heavy and blah.
